Web Clipper not capturing Hindi fonts correctly: how to fix it

Find out whether Hindi looks wrong on the source page, in the extracted text, or only in your clipping app—and choose the right fix.

If a web clipper saves Hindi text incorrectly, first check whether it looks correct in the original browser tab. Then compare the saved text itself with the source: if the characters changed or disappeared, investigate extraction; if the same text is present but looks different, investigate fonts and rendering in the destination app. If you need the page to look exactly as it does in the browser, try a screenshot or region capture, understanding that the result is an image rather than editable text.

There is no single verified fix for every clipper. The clipper, browser, operating system, destination app, website, and whether you need editable text all affect the right next step.

1. Record the setup and check the original page

Before changing settings, note:

  • The page URL and whether the problem happens on one page or several.
  • Your browser and version, operating system, clipper name and version, and destination app.
  • Whether the saved result is editable text, a PDF, or an image.
  • What looks wrong: missing characters, broken conjuncts, misplaced vowel signs, boxes, or different-looking glyphs.

Look at the same Hindi passage in the original page. If it is already wrong there, clipping is not yet the main suspect: begin with the page’s rendering in that browser and system. If it looks correct there but not in the saved copy, continue by comparing the content and appearance separately.

2. Check whether the text changed or only its appearance

Devanagari does not always render as one independent glyph for each Unicode character. Combining marks, conjuncts, dependent vowels, character ordering, the chosen font, and the application or system rendering environment can all affect the visual result. A sequence can therefore be intact while its glyphs appear wrong in one destination.

  1. Choose a short Hindi passage that looks wrong in the saved clip.
  2. Copy it from the source page into a plain-text editor. Also inspect or copy the corresponding text from the destination, if possible.
  3. Compare the sequences. Look for missing or changed characters, not just different shapes.
  4. If the sequence differs, focus on selection, extraction, or the clipper’s handling of that page.
  5. If the sequence is retained but glyphs differ, test the destination app and its rendering environment. Try opening the same text in another app or on another system where available.

The Unicode Consortium explains that even where a particular font lacks a combination, a Unicode-conformant system should retain and transmit the sequence without distortion so it may be processed programmatically. That does not guarantee that every clipper extracts text correctly or that every app renders it identically. See Unicode’s Characters and Combining Marks FAQ and its Indic FAQ.

3. Try another clipping mode

When the source looks right but the saved text does not, make a second clip using another mode before replacing software. Modes can select and transform page content differently.

  • Article or simplified article: useful when you want readable, editable text with less page layout.
  • Full page: useful for capturing the page as a whole; depending on the product, it may extract content or preserve an image.
  • Manual selection: useful when only one section or passage is affected.
  • Screenshot or region capture: useful when visual fidelity matters more than editability.

These are general troubleshooting choices, not Hindi-specific guarantees. Evernote recommends trying different clip types, selecting content manually, taking a screenshot, checking browser settings, clearing cache, and testing another page when clipping is incorrect. Follow the instructions for your own clipper; option names and behavior differ. See Evernote Web Clipper troubleshooting.

4. Choose editable text or visual preservation

If you need to search, edit, quote, or copy the Hindi later, prefer an extractive clip and troubleshoot why the saved sequence differs or why the destination renders it differently. If you mainly need the page to retain its appearance, try screenshot capture.

OneNote Web Clipper documents Full Page and Region options that capture the page or selected region as a screenshot image, preserving the clipped content’s appearance. An image is not equivalent to editable text: its words may not be selectable or searchable as text. See Microsoft’s OneNote Web Clipper guide.

5. Narrow down page-specific failures

Try clipping a different page that displays Hindi. If the issue occurs only on one site, the page’s structure or content may be interacting with the clipper. Keep the failing URL and a brief description of the expected and saved result, then send them to the clipper vendor’s support team. Notion notes that websites are built differently, formatting can vary in Notion, and asks users to share a URL when content is missing; see Notion Web Clipper help.

If the problem occurs across unrelated sites, update the browser and clipper, then check the clipper’s browser permissions and settings. Clear the browser cache only as a general troubleshooting step when appropriate; it is not a Hindi-specific correction. Evernote includes browser updates, settings, cache, and testing another page among its general checks.

6. Troubleshooting common symptoms

Symptom Likely area to investigate Next step
Hindi is already malformed in the browser Source page or browser/system rendering Check another page and browser. Resolve the source display first, then clip again.
Characters are missing or different in the saved text Extraction, selection, or page-specific clipper behavior Try manual selection and another clip mode; compare with another site; send the URL to the vendor if it persists.
Text sequence matches, but glyphs look different Destination font or rendering environment Open the text in another app or system and check whether the destination supports and renders the needed Devanagari combinations.
Conjuncts or vowel signs appear separated or misplaced Rendering of combining marks and character ordering Compare the underlying sequence before treating this as data loss; try another destination or screenshot capture if appearance is the priority.
Only one website fails Site-specific page structure or content Test another page and provide the failing URL to the clipper support team.
The screenshot looks right but text cannot be edited Expected property of an image capture Use an extractive mode if editable text is required; use the screenshot for visual reference.
The clipper behaves inconsistently across attempts Browser or extension state, settings, or page variation Update the browser and extension, review relevant settings, and try another page and mode.

7. A practical order of operations

  1. Confirm Hindi displays correctly in the source tab.
  2. Record the browser, operating system, clipper, destination, URL, and output type.
  3. Compare a short copied passage from source and destination in plain text.
  4. For changed or missing text, try another mode or manual selection.
  5. For intact text with different glyphs, check destination rendering by opening it elsewhere.
  6. For appearance over editability, test screenshot or region capture.
  7. Test another site. If the failure is page-specific, report its URL to the vendor.
  8. Update the browser and clipper and review relevant settings if the problem spans sites.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is a visual record of a web page rather than editable clipped text, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A screenshot preserves what the browser rendered; it does not repair malformed source text or turn an image into editable Hindi.

For a Hindi page, set the target URL in this one-call example. API options and response details are in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/hindi-page -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com/hindi-page"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com/hindi-page' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers screenshot and page information tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card.

Performance, reliability, and cost notes

  • Speed: A screenshot capture must load and render the page, so a slow or incomplete source page can affect the result. For clipper troubleshooting, compare the same page and passage across modes to isolate the failure.
  • Reliability: Keep the source URL and environment details with a report. A screenshot can preserve the rendered state at capture time, but it cannot fix missing content or text that already renders incorrectly.
  • Storage: Image captures preserve appearance but use image data and are less useful for editing and text search than extracted text.
  • Cost: The clipper and destination determine any costs for their use. ScreenshotNeo offers 1,000 captures monthly free without a card; paid tiers are Starter $5 for 3,000, Growth $15 for 15,000, Pro $39 for 60,000, Scale $99 for 250,000, and Business $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free; every feature is on every plan.

FAQ

Does a different font always fix Hindi clipping?

No. First determine whether the text sequence changed or only its display. A font or rendering issue and an extraction issue call for different investigation.

Will a screenshot make Hindi text editable?

No. It preserves visual appearance as an image. Use text extraction when you need editable text.

Why does only one page fail?

Websites are built differently, and a particular page may interact differently with a clipper. Test another page and share the failing URL with the vendor.

Is there one Hindi-specific setting for every clipper?

No universal setting is established here. The correct diagnosis depends on the clipper, source page, browser, system, and destination.
