Web Clipper Not Capturing the Whole Page: How to Fix It

Fix incomplete web clips by choosing the right capture mode, checking your extension and browser, and isolating site-specific problems.

If a web clipper misses part of a page, first try a different capture mode. Use Article or Simplified Article when you need readable, editable content; use Full Page or a screenshot when you need the page’s appearance; select text manually when only one passage matters. Then test another page and check the extension and browser setup. A failure on one complex page does not necessarily mean the clipper is broken everywhere.

Web clippers have to interpret a site’s layout and content. Complex designs, interactive elements, and multimedia can be parsed incompletely or differently from how they appear in the browser. The exact steps vary by clipper, browser, and page, so use this sequence to narrow down the cause.

1. Find out whether the problem affects one page or many

  1. Try clipping a simple page that normally works, such as another article.
  2. Compare the result with the affected page. Note whether the same section is missing, the clipper hangs, or nothing is saved.
  3. If other pages clip correctly, treat the problem as potentially specific to the site’s structure or content. Complex layouts, interactive content, and multimedia can make a page harder to parse.
  4. If multiple unrelated pages fail, check the extension, browser, sign-in, permissions, and relevant browser settings before reporting a single site.

Keep the affected page URL and the capture mode you tried. Those details make a site-specific report more useful.

2. Choose a capture mode that matches what you need

Different modes produce different results. An article mode tries to extract content; a screenshot preserves a visual view. A screenshot can show content that an article parser misses, but its text is not saved as editable article text.

Capture choice Use it when What to expect
Article You want readable, editable text and images. The clipper has to parse the page; complex structures may affect what it extracts.
Simplified Article You want an article with surrounding clutter reduced, where your clipper offers this mode. It still relies on page parsing, so compare the result with the original.
Full Page screenshot You need a visual record of the whole page. It saves a screenshot rather than editable article text in OneNote.
Region screenshot You need a visual record of a particular area. It captures the selected region, not the rest of the page.
Manual selection Only a particular passage matters. Highlight the content before opening the clipper. This does not recover the unselected remainder.

Evernote

Try Article, Simplified Article, or Full Page. Evernote’s clip actions also include Bookmark and Screenshot, though available settings can vary by browser. If the article modes omit content, select the passage directly or use screenshot capture. See Evernote’s Web Clipper troubleshooting steps and default clip action settings.

OneNote

Choose Article for editable text and images. Choose Full Page or Region when a screenshot is more useful; those modes save images. Microsoft also recommends signing in and granting the requested permissions during setup. See Microsoft’s OneNote Web Clipper instructions.

Notion

Notion documents its desktop clipper for Chrome and Safari, and mobile clipping through the native share sheet. Since websites cannot all be parsed the same way, try another page to check whether the issue is site-specific. If a particular page still loses content, Notion asks users to share its URL so the engineering team can review it. See Notion’s Web Clipper help.

3. Check the extension and browser setup

  1. Update the browser. Install an available browser update, then reopen the affected page and try again.
  2. Make sure the extension is enabled. Check the browser’s extension settings and confirm the clipper is active.
  3. Sign in and grant requested permissions. Some clippers need an authenticated session and setup permissions to save clips. Complete the provider’s sign-in and permission steps.
  4. Check cookie and ad-blocker settings. For Evernote, temporarily test with ad blockers disabled and review third-party-cookie settings. Change one setting at a time so you can identify whether it affects the result.
  5. Clear the browser cache. Then sign out of the clipper and back in, reload the page, and try the capture again.
  6. Retest on another page. This tells you whether the change helped generally or only on the affected site.

These are troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee that every site’s content can be parsed. Browser support and settings differ among clipper providers.

4. Use a screenshot when parsing keeps losing content

If you need a faithful visual record, capture a screenshot instead of asking the clipper to reconstruct an article from the page. In a clipper that offers screenshot, Full Page, or Region capture, choose the mode that matches the area you need. If only a passage matters and the clipper supports selection, highlight it first.

A screenshot is useful for preserving appearance, but it is not a substitute for editable text. For a long page, make sure the chosen tool’s full-page mode includes the content you need. Pages with interactive or dynamically revealed sections may require you to open or scroll through those sections before capture.

5. Report a page-specific problem

If other pages work but one URL remains incomplete after trying another mode, send the page URL to the clipper provider. Include:

  • The URL and the name of the missing section.
  • The clipper and browser you use.
  • The capture mode and the steps you tried.
  • Whether another page clips correctly.

Notion specifically asks users to share the URL when a page is missing content so its engineering team can review it. For Evernote or OneNote, use the provider’s current support route if the documented troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue.

Or skip the browser setup

If what you need is a screenshot of a public webpage, you can request one directly from ScreenshotNeo’s API. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP image:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. See ScreenshotNeo for product details.

Troubleshooting: symptoms, causes, and next steps

Symptom Possible cause What to try
Only one site clips incompletely The page structure, interactive content, or multimedia may be difficult for the clipper to parse. Switch to Full Page or screenshot, try manual selection, then send the URL to the provider if it persists.
The clipper captures an article but omits visual sections Article mode extracts content rather than preserving the full page layout. Use screenshot or Full Page capture for a visual record.
The clipper hangs or does not finish The issue may relate to the page, extension, browser state, or setup. Test another page, update the browser, confirm the extension is enabled, clear cache, then sign out and in.
The extension cannot save or access the page You may not be signed in or have granted the requested permissions. Sign in and complete the clipper’s permission prompts.
A page works only after changing browser settings Cookie handling or an ad blocker may affect the clipper’s access to page content. For Evernote, check third-party-cookie settings and test with ad blockers disabled; restore settings that do not affect the result.
A screenshot misses content that appears after interaction The content may be revealed only after scrolling, clicking, or another page interaction. Open or reveal the needed section before capture; select a mode that captures the visible result.

Performance, reliability, and storage considerations

  • Prefer article mode for editable notes. It produces text and images you can work with, but depends on successful page parsing.
  • Prefer screenshot mode for appearance. It avoids relying on article extraction for the visual record, but stores an image rather than editable article text.
  • Test the smallest useful change first. Switching modes and trying a second page helps isolate the issue before changing browser settings.
  • Do not treat a single-page failure as a universal extension failure. Retest on a separate page; report the affected URL if the issue follows that page.
  • For browser-based screenshot capture, the page must be in the state you want saved. Reveal interactive sections before capture when needed.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a clipper miss content that I can see in my browser?

The clipper may parse the page differently from the browser’s visual rendering. Complex designs, interactive content, and multimedia can contribute to incomplete extraction.

Will Full Page capture give me editable text?

Not in OneNote: Full Page and Region are screenshot captures, while Article saves editable text and images. Other clippers may label or implement modes differently, so check their documentation.

Should I reinstall the extension?

First check that it is enabled and current, then sign in, grant requested permissions, and try another page. The available guidance supports these checks before treating the issue as a broader extension fault.

What should I send support?

Share the affected URL, the missing content, your browser and clipper, the capture mode, and whether another page works. This helps distinguish a site-specific parsing issue from a setup problem.
