Web Clipper Extension Not Showing in Chrome: How to Restore It

Find out whether Evernote Web Clipper is hidden, disabled, corrupted, or missing, then follow the right steps to restore it in Chrome.

If Evernote Web Clipper is installed and enabled but its icon is missing from Chrome’s toolbar, open the Extensions menu and select Pin beside Web Clipper. If it is absent from that menu, disabled, or marked corrupted, use Manage extensions to enable or repair it, or reinstall it from the official Chrome Web Store listing. These steps apply to the Evernote Web Clipper, which Evernote describes as its browser extension for saving pages, articles, and screenshots. Evernote’s Quick Start Guide also recommends pinning it for easier access.

1. Check whether Chrome is only hiding the icon

  1. In Chrome on your computer, select the Extensions puzzle-piece icon near the address bar. If it is not visible, open Chrome’s three-dot menu and choose Extensions.
  2. Find Evernote Web Clipper in the menu.
  3. If it appears there, select the Pin icon next to it. The elephant icon should then appear on the toolbar.

Chrome can keep an extension installed while hiding its toolbar icon. A missing icon by itself does not mean the extension was removed. Google notes that some extensions may not offer a pin option. Google’s instructions for showing hidden extensions cover the current pinning flow.

2. Check the extension’s status

  1. Open Chrome’s three-dot menu.
  2. Choose Extensions, then Manage extensions.
  3. Find Evernote Web Clipper and check whether it is present, switched on, or showing an error.

Use the result to choose the next step:

What you see What to do
Present and enabled Return to the Extensions menu and pin it.
Present but switched off Turn it on, then check the Extensions menu and pin it.
Marked corrupted Select Repair and confirm Repair extension.
Not listed Check that you are in the expected Chrome profile. If it is truly absent, install it from the official listing.
Disabled as unsupported or unsafe Read Chrome’s notice. Follow the offered recovery or alternative steps; don’t bypass a security restriction.

Google documents the enable and repair controls in Install and manage extensions. If a repair succeeds but Chrome marks the extension corrupted again, Google says suspicious software may be changing extension files; follow its repair guidance and consider scanning the computer with reputable security software.

3. Reinstall it if it is missing

  1. Open the official Evernote Web Clipper listing in the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Confirm the listing is for Evernote Web Clipper from Evernote Corporation.
  3. Select Add to Chrome, review the permissions Chrome displays, and confirm only if you want to grant them.
  4. After installation, open the Extensions menu and pin the icon.

Install from the official listing rather than an unknown download. Google advises approving permissions only for extensions you trust. If Chrome blocks installation, see the checks below before trying again.

4. Check your Chrome profile and device

  • Wrong profile: Chrome profiles have separate extensions. Select your profile avatar and switch to the profile where you installed Web Clipper, then check its Extensions menu.
  • Guest or Incognito: Google says extensions cannot be added while browsing as a guest or in Incognito. Use a regular desktop profile to install or troubleshoot it. Incognito use also requires the extension’s separate Allow in Incognito setting, and should only be enabled if needed.
  • Work or school computer: An administrator may block installation or manage which extensions are allowed. Ask the administrator to check the organization’s Chrome policy.
  • Phone or tablet: This article’s toolbar steps are for desktop Chrome. Evernote’s guide lists Chrome among its desktop browser options; mobile clipping works differently.

Google’s extension help documents the Guest, Incognito, and managed-device limitations.

5. Update Chrome, then check whether clipping works

If the icon returns but clicking it does not clip a page, that is a separate problem from a missing toolbar icon. First update Chrome and restart it. Then open Web Clipper, sign in if prompted, and try a different page. Evernote’s Web Clipper troubleshooting guide recommends using a current browser and discusses page clipping issues. Its suggestions include trying another clip type, checking browser settings, and signing out and back in. Those steps can help with clipping behavior; they do not restore an icon that is absent from Chrome.

6. Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause Fix
It is in the Extensions menu but not beside the address bar The icon is unpinned. Select Pin in the Extensions menu.
It does not appear in the Extensions menu or manager It may be installed in another profile, removed, or never installed in this profile. Switch Chrome profiles and check again; if absent, reinstall from the official listing.
The toggle is off Chrome has the extension installed but disabled it. Turn it on. If Chrome explains that it is unsupported or unsafe, follow its notice and don’t try to evade the restriction.
Chrome says the extension is corrupted Extension files may be damaged. Use Repair in Manage extensions. If corruption returns, follow Google’s guidance about possible unwanted software.
“Add to Chrome” is unavailable or installation is blocked You may be in Guest or Incognito, Chrome may need an update, or a device policy may block the extension. Use a regular desktop profile, update Chrome, and contact the administrator if the device is managed.
The icon is present, but clicking it does nothing or clipping fails This is a clipper or page behavior issue, not a toolbar visibility issue. Restart Chrome, try another page, sign in again, and use Evernote’s clipping troubleshooting steps.
The icon vanishes again after restarting The extension may have been disabled, removed, reset, or affected by a policy or unwanted software. Recheck Manage extensions and the active profile. If it is managed, ask the administrator; if corruption returns, follow Google’s security guidance.

open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

FAQ

Is Web Clipper gone if its toolbar icon disappeared?

No. Check the Extensions menu first; it may simply be hidden. Manage extensions shows whether it is installed and enabled.

Does reinstalling remove my saved clips?

Reinstalling the browser extension does not itself delete notes already saved to your Evernote account. Confirm you can sign in to the account where your clips are stored.

Can I restore it on Chrome mobile?

The pinning and Manage extensions instructions here apply to desktop Chrome. Evernote describes mobile clipping as a different workflow.

Should I allow Web Clipper in Incognito?

Only if you need it in Incognito and trust the extension’s requested access. Otherwise, use it in a regular Chrome window.
