How to Use Web Clipper to Create a Webpage Thumbnail

Use TagSpaces Web Clipper to save a webpage thumbnail, capture a visible-area or full-page PNG, and troubleshoot common clipping issues.

For a webpage thumbnail, use TagSpaces Web Clipper. When you save a page as HTML or create a bookmark, it can embed a screenshot of the visible part of the page in the saved file; that screenshot serves as the thumbnail. The extension also has separate commands for saving a visible-area PNG or a stitched full-page PNG.

This guide covers TagSpaces’ workflow specifically. “Web Clipper” can also refer to extensions from OneNote, Obsidian, or Notion, whose saving workflows differ.

1. Install and open TagSpaces Web Clipper

  1. Install the extension from the official extension store for your browser. TagSpaces documents support for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, and Opera; availability and menu details can vary by browser.
  2. Open the webpage you want to capture and wait for the content you need to appear.
  3. Click the Web Clipper extension in the browser toolbar to open its popup.
  4. Choose an output action. You can change the title and add tags before creating the file.

The extension saves ordinary files locally. Its basic functionality does not require the TagSpaces desktop app.

2. Save a webpage with an embedded thumbnail

  1. In the popup, choose Save Editable Page to save the page as HTML, or create a bookmark to save a URL file.
  2. Keep Embed screenshot in saved files enabled in the extension settings. It is enabled by default.
  3. Save the file. The screenshot embedded in the HTML or URL file represents the page’s visible area at capture time and is used as its thumbnail.

If you do not want a thumbnail embedded, turn off that setting. Screenshot embedding and embedding page images are separate options: the screenshot setting supplies the thumbnail, while image embedding concerns images in saved HTML or Markdown content.

3. Choose the right capture type

What you need TagSpaces action Result
A thumbnail with a saved page Save Editable Page HTML file with an embedded screenshot of the visible area by default
A thumbnail with a bookmark Create a bookmark URL file with an embedded screenshot by default
A separate image of what is on screen Take Screenshot Standalone PNG of the visible viewport
A separate image including below-the-fold content Full-Page Screenshot Stitched, tall PNG

The embedded thumbnail is not a full-page capture. Use Full-Page Screenshot when content below the fold matters. It scrolls through the page in viewport-sized steps and stitches the captures together.

4. Save the screenshot or page file

Depending on the browser and chosen action, TagSpaces documents output formats including HTML, Markdown, MHTML, PDF, PNG, and URL files. For a standalone visible-area image, choose Take Screenshot; for a standalone full-page image, choose Full-Page Screenshot.

In Chrome, Edge, Brave, and Opera, the browser setting Ask where to save each file before downloading can prompt you to choose a save location. Otherwise, check the browser’s download location.

5. Configure saved page content when needed

  • HTML Simplified Mode extracts main content without ads and navigation. Full Mode keeps the original text and image content.
  • Markdown extraction is experimental and can vary with page complexity.
  • MHTML saving in Chromium browsers is available through Save Complete Page, but may require enabling the browser’s “Save Page as MHTML” flag. TagSpaces warns that activating this setting changes the browser’s HTML-saving behavior. It is not needed just to create a thumbnail.
  • Available menu actions and formats can vary by browser. Use the screenshot commands if you need an image file rather than an embedded thumbnail.

6. Full-page capture behavior and edge cases

  • Long pages take longer. Full-page capture can take several seconds on long pages because browsers limit how frequently screenshots can be captured.
  • Fixed headers and cookie banners. During full-page stitching, the extension hides fixed and sticky elements after the first capture to avoid repeating them in every segment, then restores them. The embedded visible-area thumbnail is simply the viewport as it appeared at capture time.
  • Content that loads on scroll. Scroll through the page first if it loads images or sections only as you approach them, then capture. A capture cannot include content the page has not rendered.
  • Page state matters. Close overlays or set the page to the state you want represented before taking the screenshot. The thumbnail records the rendered view, not an abstract page preview.
  • Local files and remote images differ. Depending on the save format and settings, page image references may remain remote rather than being embedded. Screenshot embedding is a separate setting.

7. Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to do
Saved HTML or bookmark has no thumbnail Screenshot embedding was turned off, or a different output action was selected. Enable “Embed screenshot in saved files” in extension settings and save the HTML or URL file again.
Thumbnail shows only the top or current viewport The embedded thumbnail represents the visible area, not the full page. Use Full-Page Screenshot to create a separate tall PNG.
Full-page PNG is missing sections or images Content may load as the page scrolls or after a delay. Scroll through the page to load its content, wait for images, and repeat the capture.
Repeated or missing sticky content in a full-page capture Full-page capture manages fixed and sticky elements during stitching. Check the page at its original viewport and use a visible-area capture if the exact on-screen state is more important than page length.
The browser saves to an unexpected folder The browser is using its configured download location. Set “Ask where to save each file before downloading” in supported Chromium browsers, or locate the file in Downloads.
MHTML is unavailable The browser may require its MHTML flag, or the browser may not expose that option. Use HTML or another available format if MHTML is unnecessary. Do not enable the flag solely for a thumbnail.
Markdown content looks incomplete Markdown extraction is experimental and page structure can affect the result. Try HTML Full Mode or use a screenshot when visual fidelity is the goal.

8. Other products called Web Clipper

If you meant a different extension, its workflow is not the same. OneNote Web Clipper can save a full page or selected region as a screenshot image in a notebook section. Obsidian Web Clipper saves into a vault and does not automatically download images; image references can remain web URLs unless attachments are downloaded separately. Notion Web Clipper saves to a workspace, page, or database; its documentation describes a source URL property for database clips, rather than this embedded screenshot-thumbnail workflow.

9. Or skip the browser setup

For a screenshot you need in an app or script, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and cache hits are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use the take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

FAQ

Does the embedded thumbnail capture the entire webpage?

No. It captures the visible area. Use the separate Full-Page Screenshot action for a tall image of content below the fold.

Does TagSpaces Web Clipper require the TagSpaces desktop app?

No. Its basic functionality saves local files and can be used with applications that support those formats.

Can I save only an image without a clipped HTML page?

Yes. Choose Take Screenshot for a visible-area PNG or Full-Page Screenshot for a stitched full-page PNG.

Are page images and the screenshot thumbnail the same setting?

No. The screenshot setting embeds the thumbnail; page-image embedding controls images within saved page content.
