How to Set Up Website Change Alerts in Slack
Send website updates to Slack with RSS or a page monitor. Choose the right method, configure alerts, and troubleshoot missed or noisy notifications.
The fastest way to get website updates in Slack is to add the site’s RSS or Atom feed with Slack’s RSS app. That works when the site publishes dated feed items. For a page with no useful feed—or when you need to watch a specific section, price, or phrase—use a page-monitoring service that checks and compares the page, then sends changes to Slack.
1. Check whether the website has an RSS or Atom feed
Slack’s RSS app reports new feed items; it does not watch arbitrary changes to page content. It tracks the last item it retrieved and looks for later-dated items, so a site needs to publish a new feed entry with a newer date for an alert to appear. A feed is a good fit for blogs, release notes, and news pages. It may not report edits to an old post or changes to a product page.
Look for an RSS or Atom link on the site, often in its footer or news page. Some sites also expose a feed URL through their documentation. If you cannot find one, try the site’s own search or help pages. Do not guess a feed URL: verify that it returns an RSS or Atom document and includes recent items.
2. Add an RSS feed to a Slack channel
- Add the RSS app from the Slack Marketplace to your workspace.
- In Slack, open the channel where you want updates. A private channel can be useful for grouping feed notifications.
- Paste the verified RSS or Atom feed URL, choose the channel, and subscribe.
- Wait for a later-dated item to be published. Slack says updates appear the next time the site is updated, but the exact polling interval and delivery latency are not established, so do not treat this as real-time monitoring.
Slack says the RSS app is available on all plans and, by default, to all members except guests. Use /feed list to inspect subscriptions, /feed remove [ID number] to unsubscribe, or /feed help for command help. Keep feed subscriptions focused: a high-volume feed can make a channel noisy.
3. If there is no useful feed, monitor the page
A page monitor periodically fetches or opens a page, compares its current content with an earlier version, and sends an alert when its change rules match. This suits pages that do not publish feed items, such as pricing, inventory, documentation, policy, and release pages. Choose a monitor based on the content you need to detect and where its checks run.
Hosted visual or text monitoring with Visualping
In Visualping, add the page, choose the whole page or a specific area, describe or configure the changes that matter, select a check schedule, and review changes in its dashboard or notifications. It supports visual, text, and code changes. Its Slack Marketplace listing describes monitoring competitor pages, regulations, prices or stock, vendor compliance, product releases or API changes, and unexpected changes to your own site.
Plan detail: Visualping’s notification overview lists Slack for its Business plan. Its Marketplace listing describes free and paid plans generally; that does not establish that Slack delivery is included in the free plan. Check the current plan requirements before setting up Slack notifications.
Distill with a Slack incoming webhook
Distill monitors can check pages on a schedule, compare versions, apply conditions, and trigger actions. To send a monitor’s alert to Slack:
- Create an incoming webhook in Slack for the destination channel and copy its URL.
- In Distill, open the monitor’s Options page and choose Add action > Slack Notification.
- Paste the webhook URL and save the action.
- Run or wait for a check and confirm that the selected monitor and channel receive the expected alert.
Treat the webhook URL as a secret: it is a credential that can post to the channel. If it is exposed, revoke it and create a replacement. Distill lists Slack, Discord, and Teams webhook notifications as a premium feature for paid customers. Distill also distinguishes local monitors, which need the browser or app and device to remain running, from cloud monitors, which keep checking on its servers while your device is off. Choose the mode that matches your availability needs.
Self-hosted workflows with changedetection.io
For an RSS-centered or self-hosted workflow, changedetection.io documents adding an RSS URL as a watch, choosing its basic or fast plaintext HTTP fetcher, optionally filtering RSS item titles or keywords, and configuring a notification URL for Slack. Follow its current tutorial for the exact notification URL format and configuration fields. Self-hosting gives you control over where the monitor runs, but you are responsible for keeping that service available and maintaining its configuration.
4. Choose the right alert method
| Need | Good starting point | Check before you commit |
|---|---|---|
| New posts from a site with a working feed | Slack’s RSS app | The feed publishes new dated items; Slack polls it, so delivery is not a guaranteed real-time alert. |
| Changes to a visual area or page text | A hosted page monitor such as Visualping | Whole-page versus selected-area monitoring, change filters, notification plan, schedule, and alert detail. |
| Scheduled monitoring with a webhook action | Distill | Slack webhook delivery is a paid feature; local checks need the device and app active, while cloud checks do not. |
| RSS monitoring in a self-hosted workflow | changedetection.io | Notification URL configuration, service upkeep, and whether the chosen fetcher can read the feed. |
Before configuring a monitor, answer these questions:
- What counts as a change? New feed item, changed text, visual difference, or a particular phrase or value?
- Which part matters? Whole-page checks can alert on navigation, timestamps, ads, or other incidental changes. Select a region or add conditions when available.
- How quickly must Slack know? Choose a schedule that meets the need, and account for polling and notification delays. No universal real-time guarantee is established by these sources.
- Must monitoring continue while your computer is off? Use a cloud monitor or an always-on self-hosted service; local monitoring depends on the app and device staying active.
- Can the destination channel handle the volume? Use a dedicated channel, narrower region, keyword condition, or less frequent schedule to control noise.
- Does the Slack action require a paid plan? Confirm the service’s current notification plan before relying on it.
5. Test and maintain the alert
- Start with one low-risk page and one destination channel.
- For RSS, confirm that the feed contains dated entries and that a newly published item is eligible to appear. An edit to an existing item may not count as a newer feed item.
- For a page monitor, select a stable page or region, then set a schedule and conditions that match meaningful changes.
- Trigger a known change if you control the page, or wait for a real update. Check both the monitor’s history and the Slack channel.
- After the first successful alert, review false positives and adjust the monitored region, keywords, or schedule.
- Periodically verify the subscription or webhook action still exists, the destination channel is correct, and any required paid plan remains active.
6. Troubleshoot missed alerts and noisy channels
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| No Slack RSS update | The site has not published a feed item with a newer datestamp, or the URL is not a working feed. | Open the feed and verify its format and latest item dates. Remember the app looks for items newer than the last retrieved item. |
| Feed subscription is missing | The subscription was not added to this workspace or was removed. | Run /feed list; add the feed again if needed and confirm the target channel. |
| Page changes but monitor stays quiet | The change is outside the selected area, excluded by a condition, or the check has not run yet. | Review monitor history, region selection, keyword or change conditions, and schedule. |
| Monitor works only while a computer is on | The monitor is running locally. | Keep the device and app active or switch to a cloud monitor mode if available. |
| Distill does not post to Slack | The webhook URL or channel action is wrong, or the account does not include the premium webhook feature. | Recheck the saved action and destination, verify the plan, and replace a revoked or exposed webhook URL. |
| Too many alerts | The whole page includes dynamic or irrelevant content, or the schedule is too frequent. | Monitor a smaller region, add conditions or keywords, or reduce check frequency. |
| Alert arrives later than expected | Checks and feed polling are periodic, and delivery latency is not guaranteed to be real-time. | Review the configured schedule and provider behavior; use a shorter supported interval if the plan allows and the additional alert volume is acceptable. |
Or skip the browser setup
If the change you need is a visual record of a page at a URL, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot with one API request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server; it is not a replacement for scheduled change detection or Slack notifications. The API can help capture the current page when you need an image for a workflow.
For the API options and response behavior, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

FAQ
Can Slack alert me when an existing feed item is edited?
The RSS app looks for feed items with a datestamp newer than the last item it retrieved. An edit that does not create a newer dated item may not trigger an alert.
Can Slack watch any webpage by itself?
The native RSS app consumes feeds. For arbitrary page text or visual changes, use a page monitor that supports the content and conditions you need.
Will an alert arrive immediately?
No universal delivery time is established here. Feed polling, monitoring schedules, and notification delivery can add delay, so choose a check interval suitable for the task and verify the service’s current behavior.
Which option works when my laptop is shut down?
Slack’s feed subscription is not dependent on your browser remaining open. For Distill, choose cloud monitoring rather than local monitoring; a self-hosted monitor also needs its host to remain available.
