How to Take a Website Screenshot in Incognito Mode on Windows
Open the site in Chrome Incognito or Edge InPrivate, then press Windows+Shift+S to capture it. Learn what private mode does—and does not—hide.
To take a website screenshot in Incognito mode on Windows, open the site in a private browser window, press Windows+Shift+S, choose a capture mode, and select the area to capture. Windows opens Snipping Tool’s capture overlay. Review the snip, then save or copy it. The screenshot steps are the same whether the browser window is private or regular.
1. Open a private browser window
Chrome Incognito
- Open Chrome.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+N, or select More > New Incognito window.
- Enter the website address and wait for the page to finish loading.
Google describes Incognito as limiting what Chrome saves on your device. It does not prevent websites or organizations managing your network from observing activity. Temporary site data is removed when the Incognito session ends, but downloaded files and saved bookmarks remain. Google’s Incognito help explains what private browsing does and does not keep.
Edge InPrivate
- Open Edge.
- Select Settings and more > New InPrivate window.
- Navigate to the website.
Microsoft says Edge clears browsing history, cookies, site data, passwords, addresses, and form data when all InPrivate windows are closed. Favorites and downloaded files remain. Extensions permitted to run in InPrivate may also save browsing history. See Microsoft’s InPrivate explanation.
2. Capture the page with Snipping Tool
- Arrange the page the way you want it captured. For example, close menus, scroll to the relevant content, or resize the browser window.
- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- Choose a mode from the capture toolbar:
| Mode | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Rectangular snip | A precise rectangular part of the page. Drag to select the area. |
| Freeform snip | An irregular area drawn around the content. |
| Window snip | A browser window. Select the window you want to capture. |
| Full-screen snip | The entire display, including anything else visible on that screen. |
- Select or draw the capture area. The snip is copied to the Snipping Tool window for review and editing.
- Use Snipping Tool to crop or annotate if needed, then select Save. You can also copy the image to paste it into another application.
For a quick full-screen image copied to the clipboard, Microsoft also documents the PrtSc key. Use Snipping Tool when you need a particular browser window or a selected region. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions for Windows 10 and Windows 11.
3. Choose the right capture scope
Snipping Tool captures what is visible on the screen. It does not automatically scroll through a long webpage to create one full-page image. For a tall page, capture multiple sections, use the site’s own print or export option if available, or use a browser capture feature where permitted.
- Capture a region when you need just a chart, paragraph, or page detail.
- Capture the browser window when the browser frame and visible page should appear together.
- Capture the full display when the screenshot needs to include everything visible on the monitor.
A screenshot saved to disk or shared is a separate file. Closing the Incognito or InPrivate window does not erase that image.
4. Privacy and managed-device limits
Private browsing controls some local browser history and site data; it is not an anonymity tool. Websites and organizations managing the network may still observe activity. Treat the screenshot itself as a normal saved or shared file, and avoid capturing personal data, account details, or confidential information unless you are authorized to do so.
Work or school devices may apply screenshot restrictions. Microsoft documents an Edge policy named DisableScreenshots that blocks screenshot keyboard shortcuts and extension APIs. Its documentation notes that other capture paths, such as Edge Web Capture or operating-system and other applications, may still be available depending on policy. Google also documents screenshot prevention for managed users and browsers with Chrome Enterprise Premium, including restrictions on keyboard shortcuts and capture APIs. If a shortcut fails on a managed device, ask your organization’s IT administrator which capture methods are allowed. Microsoft Edge policy reference · Google Chrome Enterprise screenshot protection.
5. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Windows+Shift+S does nothing | Snipping Tool may be unavailable, the shortcut may be intercepted, or a device policy may block screenshots. | Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu. On a managed device, check with IT about screenshot policy. |
| The screenshot shows the wrong area | The wrong mode was selected or the selection was dragged imprecisely. | Repeat the shortcut and choose rectangular, window, or full-screen mode deliberately. Zoom or resize the page before capturing. |
| The page is blank or incomplete | The page may still be loading, or some content may appear only after scrolling or interacting. | Wait for the page, scroll to trigger visible content, then capture again. Check that the intended content is on screen. |
| A long page is cut off | Snipping Tool captures visible screen content rather than automatically scrolling the webpage. | Capture separate sections or use an available page export or browser capture feature. |
| Incognito or InPrivate will not open | Browser settings or organization policy may restrict private browsing. | Use the browser’s menu to check whether the private-window option is available. Ask IT about managed-device restrictions. |
| The screenshot remains after closing private mode | The saved image is a separate file from browser history and site data. | Delete the image from its save location and, if needed, remove it from the Recycle Bin or any destination where it was copied or shared. |
6. Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot as a file from code, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API: send one GET request with a URL and receive an image or PDF. The API can accept cookie banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
Use the API key from your ScreenshotNeo account. The examples below capture Stripe; change the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and formats.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
with open("shot.webp", "wb") as image:
image.write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
const image = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', image));
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, inspect page information, and capture PDFs. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
7. FAQ
Does Incognito make a screenshot private?
No. It changes what the browser saves locally during the session. The screenshot file can still be seen by anyone with access to where it is saved or shared.
Can I use this on Windows 10 and Windows 11?
Microsoft documents the Windows+Shift+S Snipping Tool shortcut for both Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Will closing Incognito delete my screenshot?
No. Closing private windows affects browser session data; it does not remove an image you saved, copied, or shared.
Can I capture a whole webpage with this shortcut?
It captures screen content. For a page taller than the display, take multiple snips or use a page capture or export method that supports scrolling.
