Where Is the Screenshot Folder in Windows 10?

Find Windows 10 screenshots quickly: the default folder, what each shortcut saves, and fixes when your screenshot is missing.

For screenshots saved with Windows logo key + PrtScn, open File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. Microsoft documents this as the default location. If you used PrtScn by itself, the image is usually on the Clipboard instead of in a folder. Windows logo key + Shift + S opens Snipping Tool, whose automatic-save settings and folder can be changed.

1. Open the default Screenshot folder

  1. Open File Explorer from the taskbar or press Windows logo key + E.
  2. Select Pictures in the left navigation pane.
  3. Open Screenshots.

This is the normal destination for captures made with Windows logo key + PrtScn. Microsoft’s instructions describe the same path: open File Explorer, select Pictures, then Screenshots. See Microsoft Support for the official print-screen guidance.

Typical path

C:\Users\<your-user-name>\Pictures\Screenshots

The exact path can differ if your Pictures folder was moved, redirected, or synchronized. Use File Explorer’s breadcrumb and folder properties as the source of truth for your PC.

2. Know which shortcut you used

Shortcut What it captures Does it save a file immediately? Where to look
Windows logo key + PrtScn Full screen Yes, on supported hardware Pictures > Screenshots
PrtScn Full screen No; copies the image to the Clipboard Paste into Paint, Word, an editor, or another app, then save
Windows logo key + Shift + S A selected rectangle, window, or full-screen snip Snipping Tool handles saving; settings control automatic save Usually Screenshots, unless the setting or folder was changed

3. If your keyboard has no PrtScn key

Some laptops and compact keyboards omit a dedicated Print Screen key. Microsoft lists Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative on devices without PrtScn. The available shortcut depends on the keyboard and hardware.

4. Find a Snipping Tool capture

Windows logo key + Shift + S opens the Snipping Tool overlay. Select the region or window, then open the resulting snip in Snipping Tool. You can edit it and use Save or Save as to choose a location.

Current Snipping Tool instructions say a captured snip is automatically saved to the Screenshots folder, but Snipping Tool settings can change automatic-save behavior or the default folder. Save as can create another copy in any folder you choose. Check the app’s settings if the expected file is absent. See Microsoft Support’s Snipping Tool guidance.

5. Why the Screenshots folder is empty

  1. You pressed PrtScn alone. That shortcut copies the screen to the Clipboard. Open Paint or another image editor, press Ctrl + V, and save the image.
  2. The snip still needs saving. Return to the Snipping Tool notification or window and choose Save or Save as.
  3. Automatic saving is disabled. Review Snipping Tool settings and turn on the automatic-save option if you want files created without a separate save step.
  4. The default folder was changed. Use Snipping Tool’s folder setting or Save as to identify the active location.
  5. Your Pictures folder moved. In File Explorer, right-click Pictures, choose Properties, and inspect the Location tab. Cloud-storage redirection can also place Pictures under a provider folder.
  6. The shortcut did not run. Try the hardware-specific Fn combination, or use Snipping Tool to confirm that the keyboard is working.

6. A reliable checklist

  • Open File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots.
  • Confirm whether you used Windows logo key + PrtScn, PrtScn, or Windows logo key + Shift + S.
  • If you used PrtScn alone, paste from the Clipboard before searching for a file.
  • Check Snipping Tool’s automatic-save and folder settings.
  • Inspect the Pictures folder location if it was moved or redirected.
  • Use File Explorer search for kind:=picture and sort by Date modified if you still cannot locate the capture.

7. Capturing a web page instead of your Windows desktop

The Windows shortcuts above capture what is visible on your monitor. For a repeatable screenshot of a website, a browser automation script or screenshot API is more suitable. ScreenshotNeo captures a URL as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF through one GET request. It can load lazy images, capture a CSS-selected element, set a viewport or device preset, apply custom CSS and JavaScript, wait for a selector or network idle, and more.

8. Or skip the browser setup

Use ScreenshotNeo’s API for a saved website image. Full API details are in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
const buffer = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
require('fs').writeFileSync('shot.webp', buffer);

Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server so Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients can take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

9. Performance, reliability, and cost notes

  • Desktop shortcuts: Windows logo key + PrtScn is immediate because it captures the local display. Snipping Tool adds an editing and save step when you select a region.
  • Clipboard captures: They can be lost when another application replaces the Clipboard, so paste and save promptly.
  • Website captures: Browser rendering time depends on page loading, fonts, scripts, lazy images, and any waits you request. A selector wait or network-idle wait can improve completeness while increasing latency.
  • Repeat captures: ScreenshotNeo supports a caller-selected cache TTL. Caching can reduce repeated work, and cache hits are not billed.
  • Large pages: Full-page images and PDFs use more memory and take longer than a viewport capture. Capture a specific element when the rest of the page is unnecessary.

10. Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause Fix
No file after Windows logo key + PrtScn Shortcut unsupported, wrong key combination, or Pictures location changed Try the Fn alternative, inspect Pictures properties, and test Snipping Tool
PrtScn appears to do nothing It copied to the Clipboard Paste with Ctrl + V into an editor and save
Snip notification appears but folder is empty Automatic saving is off or the folder was changed Open the snip, choose Save as, and review Snipping Tool settings
ScreenshotNeo returns an error response Missing or invalid access key, malformed URL, or an unreachable page Check the key, URL encoding, HTTP status, and target page availability
Website image is blank or incomplete Page needs more time, a selector wait, or authentication Use an appropriate delay or wait-for-selector option and provide required headers or cookies

11. FAQ

Is the Windows 10 screenshot folder always in Pictures?

That is the default for Windows logo key + PrtScn, but a moved Pictures folder or changed Snipping Tool setting can alter the actual location.

Does Windows save PrtScn automatically?

PrtScn alone copies the full screen to the Clipboard. It does not necessarily create a file until you paste and save it.

Can I change where screenshots are saved?

Snipping Tool provides settings for automatic saving and its default Screenshots folder. Save as also lets you choose a different destination for an individual capture.

What is the fastest way to capture only part of the screen?

Press Windows logo key + Shift + S, select the region, then save the snip from Snipping Tool.

Where are browser screenshots saved?

That depends on the browser extension, automation script, or API you used. A local script chooses its output path; ScreenshotNeo writes the response bytes wherever your program saves them.
