YouTube Homepage Thumbnail Size: Dimensions, Aspect Ratio and File Limits
Use 3840×2160 px for long-form YouTube thumbnails, with a 16:9 canvas. Learn how Home resizes thumbnails, Shorts rules, formats and file limits.

For a standard long-form YouTube video, create a 3840 × 2160 px thumbnail in a 16:9 aspect ratio. Export it as JPG or PNG. YouTube requires at least 640 px of width; current Help guidance recommends making the image as large as possible. Mobile video-thumbnail uploads are limited to 2 MB, while desktop uploads can be up to 50 MB. See the YouTube Help requirements.
Quick answer
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Long-form canvas | 3840 × 2160 px |
| Aspect ratio | 16:9 |
| Minimum width | 640 px |
| Formats | JPG or PNG |
| Mobile upload limit | 2 MB for video thumbnails |
| Desktop upload limit | 50 MB |
| Shorts or vertical video | Design a 9:16 image and check the 4:5 Home treatment |
Why the YouTube homepage has no single thumbnail pixel size
YouTube Home is responsive. The same uploaded source can appear in different card widths and grid layouts on phones, tablets, desktop browsers and televisions. YouTube does not publish one universal Home-card rectangle.

Design the source at 3840 × 2160, then judge it at small sizes. Keep the face, product and shortest version of your headline away from the extreme edges. This is practical layout guidance: the source is cropped or scaled into several responsive presentations.
The YouTube Data API exposes generated renditions such as a typical 1280 × 720 maxres image for some video resources. That is a delivery rendition, not the current upload recommendation. The API also says available sizes vary by resource and that mismatched uploads are resized without changing aspect ratio, which can add black bars. Read the YouTube Data API thumbnail documentation.
Recommended production workflow
- Create a 3840 × 2160 document (16:9).
- Place the main subject and any essential words inside a generous central safe area.
- Use strong contrast so the design remains readable when the card becomes small.
- Export a JPG for photographic artwork or a PNG when you need crisp flat graphics or transparency during your workflow.
- Check the final byte size for the device used to upload. Keep mobile uploads at or below 2 MB; desktop uploads can be up to 50 MB.
- Preview the image as a small card on both a light and dark background before publishing.
3840×2160 versus 1280×720
Both dimensions are 16:9, so either has the same shape. The difference is where the number comes from:
- 3840 × 2160: YouTube Help’s current recommendation for a large custom video thumbnail.
- 1280 × 720: a typical
maxresrendition returned by the API for some videos.
Do not describe 1280 × 720 as the only current upload size. Start with the larger 4K canvas, then export within the upload limit.
Shorts and vertical videos
A Short should use a 9:16 composition. YouTube says a vertical video supplied with a 16:9 custom thumbnail is replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 image on Home, Explore and subscription pages. The custom image remains visible in the watch feed, watch history and on non-mobile platforms. Design the subject and text so the 4:5 treatment still makes sense, and inspect the actual Home placement after upload.

File formats, limits and eligibility
- Use JPG or PNG.
- Keep a mobile video-thumbnail upload at 2 MB or less.
- Desktop uploads can be up to 50 MB under the current Help page.
- Custom thumbnails require account verification.
- Thumbnails must follow YouTube Community Guidelines. Violations can lead to rejection, strikes or loss of thumbnail privileges.
How to inspect the homepage result
The source file is only half the job. Capture the published page at the viewport sizes your audience uses and inspect whether the card remains legible.
- Publish or schedule the video with the final thumbnail.
- Open the channel or Home page in a clean browser session.
- Capture desktop and mobile-sized views.
- Check the card at its rendered size: face visibility, headline contrast, edge safety and any automatic vertical treatment.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo can capture the published YouTube page through one request, so you can review responsive homepage cards without maintaining browser automation. Its clean-shot flow accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Thumbnail looks soft | Source was exported too small or repeatedly recompressed. | Work at 3840 × 2160 and export once as a quality JPG or PNG. |
| Black bars appear | The uploaded ratio does not match the requested rendition. | Use a 16:9 source for long-form video; avoid adding bars yourself. |
| Text is unreadable on Home | The responsive card is much smaller than the design canvas. | Shorten the headline, increase contrast and test a small preview. |
| Upload rejected for size | The file exceeds the device limit. | Compress the JPG, reduce unnecessary metadata or use a PNG only when needed; remain under 2 MB on mobile. |
| Vertical thumbnail is replaced | A 16:9 custom image was supplied for a vertical video. | Design 9:16 and account for YouTube’s 4:5 Home presentation. |
| Custom thumbnail option missing | The account is not verified or has a policy restriction. | Verify the account and review Community Guidelines and channel status. |
Performance and workflow notes
- Readability: Optimize for the smallest card you expect, not only the 4K master.
- File size: PNG can be substantially larger than JPG for photographic designs; choose based on the artwork and upload device.
- Batch production: Keep a 3840 × 2160 template with replaceable subject, background and short headline layers so every video preserves the same safe margins.
- Review: Capture the real page after publishing because responsive layout, neighboring cards and vertical-video rules affect the final appearance.
FAQ
Is 1280 × 720 still acceptable?
It has the correct 16:9 shape and appears as a common API rendition, but YouTube’s current Help guidance recommends a larger 3840 × 2160 upload canvas.
Can I upload a 4K thumbnail from a phone?
You can create it, but mobile video-thumbnail uploads have a 2 MB limit. Compress or resize the export until it meets that limit.
What size should a YouTube Short thumbnail be?
Use a 9:16 design. Check the 4:5 automatic Home treatment for vertical videos.
Will YouTube crop my 16:9 image?
YouTube resizes images while preserving aspect ratio. The rendered Home card can vary with layout; mismatched ratios may produce black bars.
Do custom thumbnails need verification?
Yes. Custom thumbnails require account verification and must comply with Community Guidelines.
