How to Create YouTube Thumbnails at the Right Size in Photoshop

For a standard YouTube video thumbnail, create a Photoshop document at 3840 × 2160 pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio. This is YouTube’s current recommended thumbnail size. Keep the proportions linked when resizing, crop an image to 16:9 before forcing it into the canvas, and export as JPG or PNG. YouTube lists a minimum width of 640 pixels, a 2 MB limit for mobile uploads, and a 50 MB limit for desktop uploads. See the official YouTube thumbnail requirements.

The workflow below covers standard videos, existing images, Shorts, export settings, upload problems, and a way to capture preview images automatically.

1. Choose the correct YouTube thumbnail dimensions

Use case Canvas size Aspect ratio Important limit or note
Standard video 3840 × 2160 px 16:9 Minimum width: 640 px
YouTube Shorts 2160 × 3840 px 9:16 Minimum height: 640 px
Older 720p reference 1280 × 720 px 16:9 This is a video-resolution figure, not YouTube’s current thumbnail recommendation

Use 3840 × 2160 for a normal landscape video. Use 2160 × 3840 for a Shorts thumbnail. YouTube notes that a vertical video using a 16:9 custom thumbnail can receive an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail in some mobile surfaces, while the custom image remains visible in the watch feed, watch history, and non-mobile platforms.

2. Create a new thumbnail document in Photoshop

  1. Open Photoshop and create a new document.
  2. Set Width to 3840 px.
  3. Set Height to 2160 px.
  4. Use pixels as the unit and keep the document at a 16:9 ratio.
  5. Choose a color mode and background that match your source assets, then create the document.

Design at the full recommended size so you have room for sharp type, subject cutouts, and cropping adjustments. Check the composition at a small preview size before exporting; text and the main subject should remain easy to identify inside the frame.

Keep the important content inside the frame

Place faces, products, and headline text away from the edges. YouTube can display thumbnails at different sizes and on different surfaces, so details near an edge can become difficult to read. This is composition guidance, not a guarantee of higher views or click-through rate.

3. Resize an existing image without distortion

When your starting image is not already 3840 × 2160, use Photoshop’s Image Size controls and keep its proportions linked. Adobe’s documentation explains that enabling Resample changes the total pixel dimensions; the interpolation method controls how Photoshop calculates the new pixels. See Adobe’s Image Size and resolution documentation.

  1. Open the source image.
  2. Open the Image Size controls.
  3. Enable the linked proportions or chain control.
  4. Set the required pixel dimensions, or set the longer side first while preserving the ratio.
  5. Enable Resample when you need Photoshop to create or remove pixels.
  6. Choose an interpolation method appropriate to the image, then apply the change.

Do not enter unrelated width and height values independently to make an image fit. That stretches faces, logos, and objects. If the source ratio is different, crop or recompose it first.

4. Crop a source image to 16:9

Cropping is usually safer than stretching when the source is square, portrait, or another landscape ratio.

  1. Select Photoshop’s Crop tool.
  2. Set the crop ratio to 16:9.
  3. Move the crop area until the subject and any planned text remain visible.
  4. Apply the crop.
  5. Set the final document or image dimensions to 3840 × 2160 pixels with linked proportions.

If cropping removes a person or product, create a new 3840 × 2160 canvas and recompose: place the source image on its own layer, scale it proportionally, and extend the background with additional design elements. This preserves the subject instead of deforming it.

5. Design for a small preview

  • Use a clear focal subject with strong separation from the background.
  • Keep headline text short enough to remain legible when the thumbnail is reduced.
  • Inspect the design at a small size before exporting.
  • Keep critical text and faces away from the edges.
  • Check that overlays, shadows, and color adjustments do not hide the subject.

Meeting YouTube’s dimensions helps the file fit the technical requirement. It does not guarantee approval, impressions, views, or a particular performance result.

6. Export a JPG or PNG under YouTube’s file limits

YouTube lists JPG and PNG among accepted examples for custom video thumbnails. Export the final image in one of those formats and check the limit for the device that will perform the upload:

  • Mobile video thumbnail upload: 2 MB maximum.
  • Desktop video thumbnail upload: 50 MB maximum.

Use Photoshop’s export controls to choose JPG or PNG, then verify the resulting file size in your operating system before uploading. If a JPG is too large, reduce its quality setting gradually while checking text and edges. If transparency is required in your working file, remember that the YouTube upload still needs to meet the selected format and size limit.

7. Upload the thumbnail in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select the video.
  2. Open the video’s thumbnail controls.
  3. Choose the option to upload a custom thumbnail.
  4. Select the exported JPG or PNG.
  5. Save the video changes.

Custom video thumbnails require a verified account and must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube also notes that changes can take time to appear.

8. Standard videos versus Shorts

Do not use the standard 16:9 canvas for every upload. For a Shorts thumbnail, start with 2160 × 3840 pixels and a 9:16 ratio. Shorts custom thumbnails are currently added in YouTube Studio on a computer. If the video is vertical but you supply a landscape 16:9 image, YouTube may generate a different 4:5 presentation on home, Explore, and subscription pages.

9. Troubleshooting common Photoshop and upload errors

Problem Likely cause Fix
The subject looks stretched Width and height were changed independently Undo the resize, link proportions, and crop or recompose instead
The thumbnail is rejected on mobile The file exceeds 2 MB Export a JPG with a lower quality setting and verify the file size before uploading
The thumbnail is rejected on desktop The file exceeds 50 MB or uses an unsupported format Export as JPG or PNG and confirm the file is below 50 MB
Important content is cut off The source image was cropped without checking the composition Reopen the crop, move the focal subject inward, or recompose on a 16:9 canvas
The image looks soft after resizing up Upscaling cannot restore detail that was not in the source Start from the highest-resolution source available and inspect the export at thumbnail size
The design looks correct but YouTube still shows an old image Propagation delay or cached preview Confirm that the video was saved, then allow time for the change to appear
A Shorts thumbnail displays differently on mobile YouTube uses different surfaces and may generate a 4:5 presentation Design the focal area so it remains understandable in a vertical crop
The custom-thumbnail option is missing The account may not be verified Complete the account verification required for custom video thumbnails

10. Performance, reliability, and file-size checks

Large Photoshop documents use more memory and take longer to export. Keep a layered working file for future edits, then create a flattened delivery copy in JPG or PNG. Before uploading, check three things: the pixel dimensions, the aspect ratio, and the file size for the upload device. A visual check at reduced size catches unreadable text and accidental cropping before the file reaches YouTube.

There is no documented performance guarantee tied solely to matching 3840 × 2160. Treat the dimensions as a technical requirement and evaluate the creative design separately.

11. Or skip the browser setup

If you need a clean preview of a published video page or thumbnail reference, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Its capture flow accepts cookie and consent banners before removing more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. 12. FAQ

Is 1280 × 720 the correct YouTube thumbnail size?

It is a valid 16:9 image size and appears in YouTube’s 720p video-resolution guidance, but the current custom-thumbnail guidance recommends 3840 × 2160.

Can I upload a Photoshop PSD file?

Export the finished design as JPG or PNG before uploading. PSD is a working format, not one of the accepted examples listed for the thumbnail upload.

Should every thumbnail be 16:9?

No. Standard videos use 16:9; Shorts use 9:16 and have separate size guidance.

No performance guarantee follows from meeting the dimensions. The recommendation addresses technical size and ratio requirements.

Why does my thumbnail look different in some YouTube locations?

YouTube displays thumbnails across multiple surfaces and may generate alternate presentations, especially for vertical videos. Design the focal subject to survive the intended crop.
