Why YouTube Won’t Let You Upload a Thumbnail and How to Fix It

Fix YouTube thumbnail uploads by checking feature eligibility, file limits, Shorts workflow, daily limits, policy restrictions, and display delays.

The usual causes are account eligibility, an unsupported file or upload path, a reached daily limit, or a policy restriction. Start with YouTube Studio’s feature-eligibility panel, then match the exact error message to the fixes below. YouTube does not publish one universal numeric daily thumbnail limit.

1. Check feature eligibility first

Custom thumbnails are an intermediate YouTube feature unlocked through phone verification. In YouTube Studio, open Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility. If intermediate features are not enabled, complete phone verification before troubleshooting the image itself. YouTube’s help page states that your account must be verified to use custom thumbnails: Add custom thumbnails on YouTube.

For a non-Brand Account, only the channel owner can phone-verify. For a Brand Account, an owner or manager can verify the channel. A phone number can be linked to no more than two channels per year for verification.

2. Match the image to YouTube’s requirements

Content and upload path Recommended dimensions File limit
Regular video, desktop 3840 × 2160 px, 16:9; minimum width 640 px 50 MB
Regular video, mobile 16:9; use YouTube’s recommended resolution where practical 2 MB
Short, desktop Studio 2160 × 3840 px, 9:16; minimum height 640 px 50 MB
Podcast thumbnail, desktop Use a clear, high-resolution image 50 MB
Podcast thumbnail, mobile Use a clear, high-resolution image 10 MB

YouTube recommends JPG or PNG. The dimensions and aspect ratios are recommendations, while the device-specific size limits are the practical limits to check when Studio rejects a file. Re-export the image as JPG or PNG, reduce unnecessary metadata, and confirm the resulting file size before uploading.

3. Use the correct upload workflow

Regular video on desktop

  1. Open YouTube Studio.
  2. Select Content, then choose the video.
  3. In the video details page, select Thumbnail → Upload file.
  4. Choose the JPG or PNG file and select Save.

Regular video on iOS or Android

Use the custom-thumbnail option in the YouTube Studio app. If the option is missing, return to Feature eligibility and verify that intermediate features are enabled.

Shorts

Custom Shorts thumbnails are currently added in YouTube Studio on a computer. If you are trying from the mobile app and cannot find the option, open Studio on a desktop browser instead.

4. Diagnose the exact error

Symptom or message Likely cause Fix
Custom thumbnail option is missing Intermediate features are not enabled or the account role is insufficient Open Feature eligibility, complete phone verification, and have the owner or Brand Account manager verify.
“This phone number cannot be used for verification” Carrier restriction, number already used for two channels this year, or an ineligible number Try text instead of voice (or voice instead of text), or use an eligible number. YouTube notes that some carriers do not support Google verification.
File is rejected Unsupported format, device-specific size limit, or unsuitable dimensions Export JPG or PNG, check the applicable 2 MB, 10 MB, or 50 MB limit, and use the recommended aspect ratio.
Shorts has no custom-thumbnail control on phone Mobile Shorts workflow is unavailable Use YouTube Studio on a computer.
“Daily custom thumbnail limit reached” A channel-specific or regional upload limit was reached Wait 24 hours and try again. YouTube says limits can vary by country or region and channel history.
Thumbnail saved but is not visible Propagation or caching delay Allow time for the change to appear, then refresh Studio and the public watch page.

5. Check policy and channel standing

Custom thumbnails must follow YouTube Community Guidelines. YouTube specifically lists nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content as reasons a thumbnail can be rejected or lead to a strike. Review notices in YouTube Studio and the email associated with the channel. A strike can affect feature eligibility or upload limits. See YouTube feature access guidance for account-level restrictions.

6. Understand display differences and delays

A successful save does not guarantee that every YouTube surface changes immediately. Give the update time to propagate before replacing the file repeatedly.

Vertical videos have an additional display rule: on Home, Explore, and Subscriptions, YouTube may show an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail instead of a 16:9 custom image. The custom thumbnail can still appear in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms.

7. A repeatable troubleshooting checklist

  1. Copy the exact Studio error message.
  2. Check Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility.
  3. Confirm the uploader has the required owner or manager role.
  4. Verify the phone number and remember the two-channel-per-year restriction.
  5. Identify whether the item is a regular video, Short, or podcast.
  6. Use JPG or PNG and check the device-specific file-size limit.
  7. Use 16:9 for regular videos and 9:16 for Shorts; treat YouTube’s pixel guidance as recommended targets.
  8. For Shorts, switch to desktop Studio.
  9. If the daily-limit message appears, wait 24 hours.
  10. Review policy notices and allow time for a saved thumbnail to appear.

8. Or skip the browser setup

If you need a clean image of a reference page, documentation page, or design before creating a thumbnail, ScreenshotNeo can capture it with one request. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

9. FAQ

Why did YouTube remove my custom thumbnail?

Check policy notices and channel standing. A thumbnail that violates Community Guidelines can be rejected, and a strike can restrict features.

Is 3840 × 2160 mandatory?

No. It is YouTube’s recommended video-thumbnail resolution. Keep the image at least 640 pixels wide and use 16:9 where practical.

How many thumbnails can I upload per day?

YouTube does not state one universal number in the cited help pages. Limits vary by country or region and channel history; follow the 24-hour wait instruction when Studio shows the daily-limit error.

Can I add a custom thumbnail to a Short from my phone?

Use YouTube Studio on a computer for custom Shorts thumbnails.
