Can Greenshot Capture Video? Understanding Its Recording Limitations

Greenshot is documented for still screenshots, not video. Learn what it can capture and which Windows or Mac recorder fits your use case.

Short answer: Greenshot’s official help documents still-image capture modes and editing, but it does not document a screen-video recording mode. Its full-screen command is described as creating “a screenshot of the complete screen,” not a continuous recording. For video, use a recorder built into Windows or macOS, chosen by the area and app you need to capture.

What Greenshot officially supports

The Greenshot help documentation (version 1.2.10) describes these screenshot workflows:

  • Capture a rectangular region.
  • Capture the last region again.
  • Capture an active or selected window.
  • Capture the full screen.
  • Capture an Internet Explorer page.

It also documents an image editor for annotations, highlighting, obfuscation and cropping, plus capture, output and plugin settings. The help page does not describe a record button, a video timeline, audio controls, a video format or a video-export workflow. The careful conclusion is that Greenshot is documented as a screenshot utility; its official documentation does not offer a video-recording mode.

The downloads page lists Windows release 1.3.315, released 20 March 2026. That release listing provides version context, but it does not establish video support; the capability answer comes from the help documentation.

Why a full-screen screenshot is not video

A full-screen capture records one frame at the moment you trigger it. Video recording repeatedly captures frames and writes them to a time-based file, usually with optional microphone or system audio. Greenshot’s documented full-screen action performs the first operation only.

Windows option 1: record a rectangular area with Snipping Tool

Microsoft documents a video-snipping workflow in Snipping Tool for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Availability can depend on your installed version and updates.

  1. Open Snipping Tool.
  2. Select Record, then New. You can also press Windows logo key + Shift + R.
  3. Drag over the rectangular area to record.
  4. Start the recording, reproduce the actions, then stop it.
  5. Save the clip or open it in Clipchamp.

This is the closest built-in replacement when you need a bounded region such as a browser panel, dialog or product demonstration. See Microsoft’s instructions for Snipping Tool screen capture and recording.

Windows option 2: record an app or game with Xbox Game Bar

For a single app or game, Microsoft documents Xbox Game Bar recording:

  1. Bring the app or game you want to record to the foreground.
  2. Press Windows + Alt + R to start or stop recording.
  3. Press Windows + Alt + M to toggle the microphone.
  4. Find the resulting MP4 in Videos\\Captures.

Game Bar is intended for an app or game rather than an arbitrary desktop region. Its documented output is an MP4. Check Microsoft’s Xbox Game Bar recording instructions for current Windows behavior.

Mac option: Screenshot controls or QuickTime Player

Apple documents two built-in approaches:

  • Open the macOS Screenshot controls, choose a screen-recording mode, select the area or screen, and start and stop recording.
  • Open QuickTime Player and use its screen-recording command.

Some apps, including Apple TV, may prevent window recording. Apple’s screen-recording instructions describe the current controls and restrictions.

Choose the recorder by capture target

Capture target Recommended built-in route Reason
A selected rectangle on Windows Snipping Tool Designed for a rectangular video snip.
An app or game on Windows Xbox Game Bar Records the foreground app or game and saves MP4.
The Mac screen or a selected area Screenshot controls Native macOS workflow with area and screen choices.
A Mac workflow needing QuickTime QuickTime Player Apple documents screen recording there as well.

Decide first whether you need a still image or a time-based clip, then whether you need a region, an app, the entire display, microphone audio or system audio. Those requirements determine the tool; Greenshot’s screenshot modes do not become video when repeated manually.

Troubleshooting recording attempts

There is no video or Record button in Greenshot

Cause: Greenshot’s documented interface is for screenshots and image editing. Fix: use Snipping Tool, Xbox Game Bar or macOS Screenshot controls for video.

The result is a single image

Cause: a Greenshot capture creates one frame. Fix: start a video-recording command before performing the actions you want to demonstrate.

Snipping Tool has no Record option

Cause: the installed Windows build or updates may not provide the feature. Fix: update Windows and Snipping Tool where permitted, or use Xbox Game Bar for an app/game recording.

Game Bar does not capture the desktop or a window

Cause: Game Bar is documented for recording a game or app. Fix: use Snipping Tool for a rectangular region or the recorder supplied by your organization for broader desktop capture.

The Mac app records a black or unavailable window

Cause: some applications restrict recording; Apple specifically warns that certain apps may not allow their windows to be recorded. Fix: check the app’s policy and Apple’s current guidance, then record an allowed area if available.

No microphone audio is present

Cause: microphone capture is a separate setting. Fix: enable the microphone control in the recorder; Xbox Game Bar uses Windows + Alt + M.

When a screenshot API is the better fit

If your requirement is an automated still image of a web page rather than a video of a desktop session, an API avoids installing and driving a desktop recorder. ScreenshotNeo is the first screenshot API to try because it removes consent banners, popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo captures PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF results from one GET request; it does not record screen video. It is useful when you need repeatable web-page stills for tests, documentation, previews or monitoring.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the full parameter reference. This minimal request captures Stripe as a WebP:

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Relevant controls include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector waits, delays, network-idle waits, hidden selectors, blocked ads or resource types, custom headers and cookies, user-agent and Authorization values, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, a chosen cache TTL, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, PDF paper and margin settings, and a usage API. Every response identifies the page verdict and whether it was billed with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads and cache hits are never billed. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Performance, reliability and cost considerations

  • Desktop recording: recording length, resolution and frame rate affect file size and system load. Keep the capture region as small as the demonstration allows.
  • Still screenshots: Greenshot is appropriate for an immediate manual frame. For repeatable web captures, an API can be called from CI or a scheduled job.
  • Failure handling: with ScreenshotNeo, inspect X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed; failed loads, bot checks, blank pages, timeouts and cache hits are not billed.
  • Cost: Greenshot is free and open source for Windows, with a contribution prompt on its downloads page. Windows and macOS built-in recorders are supplied with the operating system. ScreenshotNeo offers 1,000 free shots per month without a card, then Starter is $5 for 3,000; yearly billing gives two months free.
