How to Capture the Client Area with OBS Window Capture

Capture only an app’s content in OBS with Client Area, crop leftover borders, troubleshoot blank previews, and choose the right capture source.

To capture only an application’s content in OBS, add a Window Capture source, select the target window, and leave Client Area enabled. Client Area targets the window’s inner content instead of its title bar and outer frame. If any border or toolbar remains, crop the source with Edit Transform or by holding Alt (Windows/Linux) or Option (macOS) while dragging a bounding-box handle.

What Client Area captures

OBS describes Window Capture as capturing “a specific window and its contents.” The Client Area option narrows that capture to the application’s client content on Windows. The title bar, resize border and other non-client frame pixels are excluded when the option works as intended.

Client Area is a property of the Windows Window Capture source. It is shown for the Windows 10 capture method and is enabled by default in OBS documentation. The exact properties visible can vary by operating system, OBS version and capture method.

Capture the client area in OBS

  1. Open OBS Studio and select or create the scene where the recording will appear.
  2. In the Sources box, click + and choose Window Capture.
  3. Name the source, then click OK.
  4. In Window, choose the application window you want to record. Keep that application open while selecting it.
  5. On Windows, choose the documented Windows 10 capture method if it is available and compatible with your setup.
  6. Enable Client Area. Leave Capture Cursor enabled or disabled according to whether the pointer should appear.
  7. Check the OBS preview. Move or resize the source until the client content has the composition you need.
  8. If a frame, toolbar or unwanted pixels remain, crop the source using the steps below.

Important Window Capture properties

Property What it controls Typical choice
Window The application window OBS follows Select the exact running window
Capture Method How OBS obtains the window image Use the documented/default method first; try another available method for a blank preview
Window Match Priority How OBS finds the window again if its title changes Choose a stable matching rule when the application changes titles
Capture Cursor Includes the mouse pointer Enable for demonstrations; disable for clean footage
Client Area Targets the inner client content rather than the outer frame Enabled when you want to remove title bars and borders

Remove borders and remaining pixels

Client Area removes the window frame when the capture method exposes that information correctly. It does not understand every toolbar, in-app border or custom drawing. Use a manual crop when the preview still contains pixels you do not want.

  1. Right-click the Window Capture source and choose Transform → Edit Transform.
  2. Enter crop values for the left, top, right or bottom edges, or use the visual handles in the preview.
  3. For direct cropping, hold Alt while dragging a handle on Windows or Linux. On macOS, hold Option.
  4. Resize the cropped source from a corner while preserving the intended aspect ratio.
  5. Watch for black bars and verify that controls at the edge of the application were not removed accidentally.

A small manual crop is usually preferable to switching to Display Capture when the problem is only a few pixels around one window.

Window Capture or Display Capture?

Need Use Why
One application window Window Capture It follows the selected window even when another window overlaps it.
The complete monitor Display Capture It records the monitor, including overlapping windows and desktop activity.
One supported game Game Capture OBS recommends trying Game Capture first for DirectX or OpenGL games on Windows.
A single region of a monitor Display Capture plus a crop Useful when no window source is available, but anything appearing in that monitor region can be captured.

On macOS, display cropping can automatically crop to a window’s bounds, but overlapping windows are still captured there. Window Capture is the better fit when you need one application isolated from other windows.

Platform-specific setup

Windows

Windows Window Capture properties include Window, Capture Method, Window Match Priority, Capture Cursor and Client Area. Client Area is associated with the Windows 10 capture method. If the source is blank, test another capture method offered by your OBS build and confirm the target application is running.

macOS 13 and newer

Use macOS Screen Capture, then choose Window or Application. OBS documents this as the modern ScreenCaptureKit path and notes that it can capture audio on macOS 13 and newer.

macOS 10.15 through 12.6

Older OBS builds list the earlier Window Capture path. OBS warns that this path is less performant, so use the source available in your current OBS build and compare the preview before recording.

Linux

On X11, OBS lists Window Capture (Xcomposite). On Wayland, OBS lists Screen Capture (PipeWire). The available properties depend on the session type and desktop environment.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
The target window is missing The application is closed, its title changed, or matching priority is unsuitable Reopen source properties, launch the application, reselect the window and adjust Window Match Priority.
The preview is blank or black The selected capture method cannot read that application Confirm the application is running, then try another documented Capture Method available in the source properties.
A title bar or border remains Client Area is disabled or the remaining pixels belong to the application itself Enable Client Area, then apply a small Edit Transform crop.
Controls disappear after cropping The crop was dragged too far Undo or reset the transform and reduce the crop one edge at a time while watching the preview.
The wrong window appears after reopening OBS Several windows share similar titles Choose a more stable Window Match Priority and verify the selected application before recording.
Another window appears in the recording Display Capture is being used, or the platform’s display crop includes overlaps Use Window Capture for one application, or keep unrelated windows off the captured monitor.
A browser tab cannot be isolated Window Capture follows the browser window, not an individual tab or DOM region Use a separate browser window, crop the visible region, or capture the page with a web screenshot tool.
A game is unstable or missing The game uses DirectX/OpenGL and is not suited to Window Capture Evaluate Game Capture first, as OBS recommends for supported games on Windows.

Quality and reliability checklist

  • Confirm the preview shows the client content at the intended resolution.
  • Resize from a corner after cropping so the composition remains consistent.
  • Keep the target window open and avoid changing its title if matching depends on the title.
  • Move another window over the target briefly; Window Capture should continue showing the selected window, while Display Capture will show the overlap.
  • Record a short sample and inspect the first and last seconds for black frames, missing controls or an incorrect crop.
  • For games, test Game Capture before spending time tuning Window Capture.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is a clean image of a web page rather than a live desktop recording, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot from one API request. It removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the full option list, including full-page capture, CSS selector element capture, device and viewport settings, dark mode, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, blocking rules, headers, cookies, authentication, geolocation, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture and PDF output.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Performance, reliability and cost considerations

Window Capture avoids recording unrelated monitor activity and is generally the appropriate source for one application. The captured result still depends on the platform capture path, application rendering technology and OBS settings. The dossier supplies no universal speed or compatibility percentage, so test the exact application and operating system you will use.

Display Capture can include notifications, overlapping windows and other desktop changes. Window Capture reduces that surface area, but it does not select a browser tab or an arbitrary HTML element. For repeatable web images, an API can provide explicit waits, selector capture, blocking and caching controls; review the resulting verdict and billing headers for each request.

FAQ

Does Client Area remove every border?

It targets the Windows client content. Custom in-app borders, toolbars or pixels produced inside the client can remain; crop those manually.

Can Window Capture record a window behind another window?

Yes. Window Capture is intended for one selected window and can keep showing it when other windows overlap it.

Should I use Client Area for a complete monitor screenshot?

No. Use Display Capture when the entire monitor is required.

Why does OBS show different options on my computer?

Source properties vary by operating system, OBS version, capture method and session type. macOS and Linux use different documented source paths from Windows.

Can I capture only one webpage element with OBS Window Capture?

Not directly. Window Capture follows the application window. Crop the visible region, or use a web screenshot API that supports CSS selector capture.
