How to Capture a Web Page Screenshot with a Hover Menu Open on Mac

Capture a hover menu before it closes using the Mac Screenshot timer, or use a direct menu capture when the menu stays open.

When a web page’s hover menu closes as soon as the pointer moves, use the macOS Screenshot timer: press Shift-Command-5, choose a capture mode, set a timer in Options, start the capture, then move the pointer back to the menu trigger and hold it there. The timer gives you time to restore the hover state before the screenshot is taken. This is a practical workaround based on Apple’s timer and capture controls; Apple does not document a hover-specific capture recipe.

If the menu remains open while the pointer moves, use a direct menu capture with Shift-Command-4, then Space, and click the menu. For a tighter crop that includes page context, drag a selection instead.

Apple’s Screenshot app is available in macOS Mojave 10.14 and later. Its controls let you capture the whole screen, a window, or a selected portion, set a timer and save location, and choose whether to show the pointer. See Apple’s guides: Take a screenshot on Mac and Take screenshots or screen recordings on Mac.

1. Choose the right capture method

Method Use it when Trade-off
Timed whole-screen capture The menu closes when the pointer leaves its trigger, or you want the least fussy pointer movement. Captures surrounding desktop; crop afterward if needed.
Timed selected-portion capture You can frame the area without moving the pointer away from the trigger, or the menu stays open reliably. Precise framing can be difficult if pointer movement dismisses the menu.
Direct menu/window capture The menu stays open when you move to the capture controls. Captures the menu or window with less surrounding page context.
Selected-area drag You need the menu plus nearby page details and it remains open during selection. The drag may dismiss a fragile hover menu.

For a fragile menu, start with timed whole-screen capture. For a stable menu, direct capture gives a tighter result. These are workflow recommendations inferred from the documented controls; behavior depends on the website.

2. Capture a menu that closes when the pointer moves

  1. Open the page and arrange it so the hover trigger and the surrounding content you want are visible. Close unrelated panels and set a useful browser zoom before starting.
  2. Press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot.
  3. Choose Capture Entire Screen for the simplest pointer movement. Choose Capture Selected Portion only if you can set the area without losing the menu state.
  4. Open Options and choose a timer. Pick enough time to return to the page and hover the trigger; Apple does not prescribe a universal delay for this workflow.
  5. Start the capture, move the pointer to the web page’s hover trigger, and hold it there. Wait for the menu to open and for the timer to take the screenshot.
  6. Review the floating thumbnail. Click it to edit or crop, or wait for the file to save to the selected location.

Whole-screen capture avoids trying to draw a crop while the menu is open. If you need only the page, crop the resulting image afterward. Check the pointer setting in Options if the cursor should or should not appear in the saved image.

3. Capture a menu that stays open

  1. Move the pointer over the page control and confirm the menu is visible.
  2. Press Shift-Command-4, then press Space. The pointer becomes a camera.
  3. Move the camera pointer over the menu and click to capture it. Hold Option while clicking if you want to exclude a window shadow.

For only part of the menu, open it, press Shift-Command-4, then drag over the menu items. This can include nearby page context, but it can also move the pointer away from a fragile trigger and close the menu.

4. Set the output and pointer options

  • Save location: In Screenshot’s Options, select where captures should go rather than assuming they will be saved to the desktop.
  • Floating thumbnail: Click it to open the capture for editing, or leave it alone for the file to save.
  • Show pointer: Turn this on when the pointer is part of the explanation; turn it off for a cleaner menu image.
  • Copy instead of save: Hold Control with a screenshot shortcut to copy the capture. Apple also documents Control-clicking the floating thumbnail to copy it.
  • Format: On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple lists SDR (PNG) and HDR (HEIF) screenshot formats. Available choices depend on the Mac and OS.
  • Video: Shift-Command-5 also provides screen recording controls. Recording can document a sequence, but it is unnecessary when you need a still.

Other useful shortcuts: Shift-Command-3 captures the whole screen. Shift-Command-5 opens Screenshot. Holding Control with a screenshot shortcut copies the capture instead of saving it.

5. Check the result

  • The menu is fully open, including its last item and any submenu you meant to show.
  • The screenshot includes enough page context to identify what opens the menu.
  • The pointer is visible only if you intended it to be.
  • No timer controls, selection handles, or unrelated desktop content obscure the page.
  • The saved file is in the location and format you expected.

6. Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause Fix
The menu closes before the screenshot. The pointer left the hover trigger before the capture completed. Use Shift-Command-5 with a timer, then return the pointer to the trigger and keep it there until capture. Try whole-screen capture to avoid framing while the menu is open.
The screenshot has too much desktop around the page. You used whole-screen capture to protect the hover state. Crop the saved image afterward using the thumbnail editor or an image editor. On the next attempt, use selected-area capture only if framing will not dismiss the menu.
The crop misses the menu or nearby context. The region was framed too tightly, or the menu moved or closed during selection. Capture the whole screen and crop afterward, or reopen the menu and use a larger area if it remains open.
The pointer is missing or appears when it should not. The Screenshot pointer option does not match the intended result. Set whether to show the pointer in Screenshot’s Options before capturing.
The image saved somewhere unexpected. The active save location differs from the assumed desktop location. Choose the destination in Screenshot’s Options and take another capture.
A window cannot be captured. Some apps restrict window screenshots; Apple gives Apple TV and DVD Player as examples. Try capturing a selected portion or the entire screen. Apple’s warning is about some apps and does not establish that ordinary web pages are blocked.
The screenshot shortcut copies instead of creating a file. Control was held with the shortcut, which copies the capture. Paste it where needed, or repeat the shortcut without Control to save a file.

7. Performance, reliability, and cost

The built-in Screenshot workflow needs no browser automation setup and has no service charge. A timer adds a short wait, and whole-screen capture may add a crop step. Its main reliability constraint is the page’s hover behavior: a menu that closes when the pointer leaves its trigger needs careful timing, and the timer workaround may vary by site. The direct menu and selected-area methods are faster to frame when the menu stays open.

Or skip the browser setup

For a screenshot of a page without controlling a local Mac pointer, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. Its options include CSS selectors, custom JavaScript and CSS, wait conditions, device presets, and PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output. For API details, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
await Bun.write('shot.webp', res);

Those examples capture a page as it loads; they do not guarantee that a hover-only menu is open. A browser screenshot API cannot infer which hover state you want from the URL alone. Use a supported click or custom JavaScript option to trigger the page control before capture, or use the Mac timer method when the interaction cannot be scripted.

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server lets AI agents use the take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is on every plan.

FAQ

Apple documents a timer option but does not specify a hover-menu delay. Choose enough time to return to the trigger, then adjust if your page opens the menu slowly.

Can I capture only the menu without the browser window?

Yes, when the menu stays open: use Shift-Command-4, press Space, and click the menu. Hold Option while clicking to omit a window shadow.

Will this work on every website?

No single sequence is guaranteed. Hover menus can respond differently to pointer movement, so use timed whole-screen capture for fragile menus and direct capture when the menu remains open.
