How to Capture Only One Screen in a Multi-Monitor Setup
Capture one monitor cleanly with Windows, macOS, or OBS. Learn the right mode, fix common problems, and avoid recording every display.
Choose a capture mode that targets one display or a rectangle on that display. For a one-off Windows image, use Snipping Tool’s rectangular snip. For a short Windows clip, use its video snip and draw the rectangle. For longer recording or streaming, use OBS Display Capture and select the intended monitor. If you need one application instead of everything visible on a monitor, use Window Capture. On macOS 13 and later, OBS’s macOS Screen Capture source can target a display, window, or application.
1. Pick the capture type first
| Goal | Best starting point | What gets captured |
|---|---|---|
| One still image | Windows Snipping Tool, rectangular mode | The rectangle you draw, even if it covers only part of one monitor |
| Short Windows clip | Snipping Tool video snip | A selected rectangular region |
| Long recording of one monitor | OBS Display Capture | The full display selected in source properties |
| One application | OBS Window Capture, or macOS Screen Capture window/application mode | The chosen window or application content |
| Built-in Mac recording | Screenshot app | Options shown by macOS; some apps can restrict recording |
A display capture and a window capture solve different problems. Display Capture records an entire monitor. Window Capture follows one window even when another window overlaps it. Decide which result you need before changing settings.
2. Windows: capture one monitor with Snipping Tool
Still screenshot
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- Choose Rectangular snip.
- Move the pointer to the monitor you want and drag from one corner to the opposite corner.
- Keep the rectangle inside that monitor’s boundaries. If it crosses into adjoining monitor space, drag a corner or start again.
- Select the notification to edit, save, or share the image in Snipping Tool.
Microsoft documents rectangular, freeform, window, and full-screen image snips in Snipping Tool support. A full-screen shortcut captures the whole desktop, so it is the wrong mode when the output must contain only one display.
Short video
- Press Windows + Shift + R, or open Snipping Tool and select the Record button.
- Select New.
- Draw a rectangle over the monitor area you want.
- Start and stop recording from the toolbar, then save the clip.
Microsoft describes this as recording a rectangular selection of any part of the screen. It is useful for a quick demonstration without building an OBS scene.
3. OBS: record one complete monitor
Windows and Linux
- Open OBS and create or select a scene.
- In Sources, select + and choose Display Capture.
- Create the source, then open its properties.
- Use the Display selector to choose the monitor you intend to record.
- Confirm the preview shows only that display. Resize or crop only if you deliberately want a smaller region.
- Start recording or streaming.
OBS states that Display Capture captures an entire monitor and that only one Display Capture source can be added per display. Recheck the selected display whenever monitors are rearranged, drivers change, or a laptop is docked. See the OBS Display Capture documentation.
Record one app instead
- Add Window Capture as the source.
- Select the application window in its properties.
- Check the preview, then record.
Window Capture keeps the selected window visible even when other windows move in front of it. Use it when “one screen” really means “one application.”
macOS 13 and later
OBS marks the older macOS Display Capture source as deprecated on macOS 13 and directs users to macOS Screen Capture. Add that source and choose display, window, or application mode. The documented audio options depend on the macOS version. On older systems, available modes may be limited.
4. macOS built-in recording
- Open the Screenshot controls with Shift + Command + 5.
- Choose a recording option and use the onscreen controls to select the screen or region offered by your macOS version.
- Start recording, then stop from the menu bar.
- Review the saved file location in Screenshot options.
Apple notes that some applications can block window recording; Apple TV is one documented example. If a protected app produces a blank or blocked result, this is an application restriction rather than a monitor-selection error. See Apple’s screen-recording guidance.
5. Prevent accidental capture of both monitors
- Check the source properties: In OBS, do not rely on a remembered monitor number. Select the display shown in the current preview.
- Watch the canvas bounds: A source can be positioned so part of another source or display appears in the scene. Verify the final preview before recording.
- Disable extra display sources: Remove duplicate Display Capture sources from the scene.
- Use Window Capture for a single app: This avoids desktop notifications and other windows on the same monitor.
- For stills, draw inside one display: Snipping Tool’s rectangle can span monitors if you drag across the desktop boundary.
- Check scaling and rotation: Mixed display scaling, portrait orientation, or a rotated monitor can make the boundary appear different from the physical layout.
6. Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Both monitors appear in the file | Full-screen capture or multiple display sources | Use a rectangular snip, select one Display Capture source, and verify its display property. |
| The wrong monitor is recorded | Monitor numbering changed after docking or reconnecting | Open source properties and select the monitor by its current preview; record a short test clip. |
| Only part of the monitor appears | Source was cropped, transformed, or placed outside the canvas | Right-click the source, reset its transform, then fit it to the canvas. |
| Window capture is black | Protected content, incompatible capture method, or application hardware acceleration | Try the application’s supported capture mode, run OBS with the needed permissions, or capture a non-protected window. Some apps intentionally block recording. |
| Snipping Tool rectangle includes the neighboring display | The drag crossed the virtual-desktop boundary | Cancel and redraw entirely within the target display. |
| Recording has no audio | Audio source was not selected or the platform limits capture | Check OBS audio sources and macOS Screen Capture’s documented audio support for your version. |
| Monitor is missing from the selector | Display disconnected, driver issue, or permission problem | Confirm the operating system sees the display, reconnect or restart the display driver, then reopen the capture source. |
7. Quality, performance, and reliability
- Resolution: Recording a full high-resolution monitor uses more encoder and storage bandwidth than a small rectangle. Match the OBS canvas and output resolution to the display when you need pixel-for-pixel output.
- Frame rate: Use a higher frame rate for motion-heavy demonstrations; a lower rate reduces CPU, GPU, and file-size pressure.
- Scaling: Mixed Windows display scaling can make cursor and window coordinates look different across monitors. Confirm the preview rather than judging from pointer position alone.
- Stability: Keep the monitor arrangement fixed during a recording. Docking, sleep/wake, or changing refresh rates can reorder displays and invalidate a source selection.
- Privacy: Window Capture or a tight rectangular snip excludes notifications, passwords, and unrelated windows more reliably than a full display recording.
- Verification: Make a five-second test recording and inspect all edges, audio meters, and the saved file before a long session.
8. Capturing a website instead of your physical monitor
Desktop tools capture displays attached to your computer. If your real requirement is a clean image of a web page at a URL, a screenshot API is usually simpler and repeatable. It cannot capture a local desktop or an arbitrary native application window; it renders the supplied web URL.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo captures a web page from one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The API accepts the URL directly, so there is no monitor layout, OBS scene, or desktop permission to maintain. Read the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
9. Cost and workflow notes
- Windows Snipping Tool, macOS Screenshot, and OBS do not charge per capture, but recording consumes local CPU, GPU, storage, and (for streaming) bandwidth.
- An API is useful when captures must run on a schedule, in CI, or on a server without a desktop session.
- For ScreenshotNeo, choose a cache TTL when repeated page images are acceptable; cache hits are not billed. Async jobs, signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting, custom headers/cookies, device presets, full-page loading, element selectors, custom CSS/JavaScript, and PDF options are available when your workflow needs them.
FAQ
Can I capture one monitor with a keyboard shortcut?
On Windows, Windows + Shift + S opens Snipping Tool; choose rectangular mode and draw within the target monitor. There is no universal shortcut that automatically chooses a specific physical monitor.
Should I use Display Capture or Window Capture?
Use Display Capture for everything visible on one monitor. Use Window Capture for one application, even when other windows overlap it.
Why does OBS show a different monitor after I reconnect my laptop?
The operating system can reorder display identifiers. Reopen the source properties and select the intended display again.
Can ScreenshotNeo capture my second physical monitor?
No. ScreenshotNeo renders a web URL. Use Snipping Tool, macOS Screenshot, or OBS for a physical desktop; use ScreenshotNeo for repeatable website captures.
Can protected video or apps be recorded?
Some applications block window or screen recording. A blank result can be an application restriction, not a multi-monitor configuration problem.
