How to Capture a Screenshot of Your Computer Screen

Learn the exact screenshot shortcuts for Windows, macOS, Chromebook and GNOME Linux, plus ways to capture, save, edit and share your screen.

The shortcut depends on your operating system:

Platform Full screen Area or window Where it goes
Windows 10/11 Print Screen Windows + Shift + S Clipboard or Snipping Tool
macOS Command + Shift + 3 Command + Shift + 4 File on the desktop by default
Chromebook Ctrl + Show windows Ctrl + Shift + Show windows Capture/Gallery workflow
GNOME Linux Shift + Print Print for the overlay Screenshot interface and saved file

Use a full-screen capture for everything visible, a window capture for one application, and an area capture for a specific control or region. If a menu disappears when you press the shortcut, use a delayed capture.

Windows 10 and Windows 11

Capture an area, window or full screen with Snipping Tool

  1. Press Windows + Shift + S.
  2. Choose rectangle, freeform, window or full-screen capture from the overlay.
  3. Select the area or window.
  4. Click the notification to open the image in Snipping Tool, then annotate and save it.

Microsoft describes Snipping Tool as capturing all or part of your PC screen. The overlay is the quickest choice when you need to select only one region or application window.

Copy the entire screen

Press Print Screen (also labeled PrtSc, PrtScn or PrntScrn). Windows copies the entire screen to the clipboard. Open Paint, an email, chat or an image editor and press Ctrl + V, then save the pasted image.

If your keyboard has no dedicated Print Screen key, Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo + Space Bar on applicable devices. Laptop layouts vary, so look for a key with a screen or camera icon and try it with Fn.

Take a delayed screenshot

Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu, choose a delay, and then select the capture mode. A delay gives you time to open a menu, hover a tooltip or expand a context menu before the image is taken.

Windows instructions are documented by Microsoft Support.

macOS

Capture the entire screen

Press Command + Shift + 3. macOS saves the image as a file, normally on the desktop.

Capture a selected area

  1. Press Command + Shift + 4.
  2. Drag over the region you want.
  3. Release the pointer to capture it.

After pressing the shortcut, press Space to switch from a rectangular selection to a window capture, then click the window.

Open Screenshot controls

Press Command + Shift + 5 to open the Screenshot app on macOS Mojave 10.14 and later. It provides full-screen, window and selected-area capture, a timer, a save location picker and screen recording.

Copy instead of saving

Hold Control while using a screenshot shortcut when you want the result copied to the clipboard. You can also use the screenshot thumbnail menu to change the destination. Some protected apps, including Apple TV, may block window screenshots.

See Apple’s official screenshot shortcuts for the current behavior.

Chromebook and ChromeOS

Capture the full screen

Press Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key looks like a rectangle followed by two vertical lines and is usually on the top row.

Capture part of the screen

Press Ctrl + Shift + Show windows, then drag over the area. ChromeOS opens the result through its built-in capture or Gallery workflow.

On an external Windows keyboard, the equivalent key may be F5; on some Mac keyboards, use the key mapped to Show windows. Tablets can use the Power button and volume-down combination or the Screen Capture control.

The same capture interface can record video when a still image is not enough. Google’s Chromebook screenshot and screen-recording guide lists the keyboard and tablet methods.

GNOME Linux

GNOME uses Print-based shortcuts:

  • Print opens the interactive screenshot overlay on current GNOME releases.
  • Alt + Print captures the focused window.
  • Shift + Print captures the full screen or starts an area selection, depending on the release and configuration.

GNOME 42 added an overlay that lets you choose an area, window or screen and switch between an image and a recording. Exact save folders and shortcuts can vary by distribution and desktop environment. KDE, Cinnamon and Xfce may use different bindings.

Read the GNOME screenshot documentation for your desktop version.

Choose the right capture mode

Need Best mode Why
Show an error spanning the desktop Full screen Preserves surrounding context.
Show one application Window Excludes unrelated windows and notifications.
Show a dialog, chart or control Area or region Keeps attention on the relevant detail.
Show a menu or hover state Delayed capture Gives you time to open transient UI.
Explain a sequence Screen recording A still image cannot show interaction over time.

Where screenshots are saved or copied

  • Windows Print Screen: copied to the clipboard until you paste and save it.
  • Windows Snipping Tool: opens a preview where you can annotate and choose a file location.
  • macOS: normally saves a file to the desktop; Control copies it instead.
  • ChromeOS: makes the image available through the Capture/Gallery workflow.
  • GNOME: saves through the screenshot interface; the exact folder depends on the distribution and version.

If you cannot find a file, use the desktop search for recent PNG files, check the screenshot app’s settings, or paste the clipboard contents into an editor and save manually.

Editing, naming and sharing

  1. Crop away unrelated notifications or browser tabs.
  2. Annotate the exact control, error line or region that matters.
  3. Use PNG for text, diagrams and sharp UI; use JPEG for smaller photographic images.
  4. Give the file a descriptive name such as checkout-error-2026-10-01.png.
  5. Before sharing, check for passwords, personal data, customer records and private notifications.

Or skip the browser setup

The desktop shortcuts above capture the screen in front of you. For a screenshot of a web page, an API avoids installing and managing a browser. ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one GET request. It accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing result.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options, including full-page capture, element selectors, dark mode, device presets, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, geolocation, caching, PDFs, signed links, async jobs and bulk capture.

cURL

Troubleshooting

The shortcut does nothing

Check the keyboard layout and try the Fn layer on a laptop. On Windows, open Snipping Tool from Start as a fallback. On Linux, verify which desktop environment is running and inspect its keyboard settings.

The screenshot is black

Protected video and some DRM applications deliberately block capture. Try capturing a normal window or use the application’s own export feature.

A menu closes before it is captured

Use the delayed timer in Snipping Tool or the macOS Screenshot app. Open the menu during the countdown, then complete the selection.

Only one monitor appears

Use full-screen capture and check whether the tool treats each display separately. For a single monitor, select that display or use a region covering it.

The image is blurry

Capture at the display’s native resolution, avoid enlarging a small region, and use PNG for text. On macOS and ChromeOS, check display scaling; on Windows, select the correct monitor in the capture overlay.

Performance, reliability and cost notes

  • For occasional support messages, built-in shortcuts are immediate and free.
  • For repeatable documentation, use a consistent window size, crop and file naming scheme.
  • Delayed captures and recordings take longer but are more reliable for transient interactions.
  • Automated web screenshots require a browser environment, page-load waiting and cleanup of overlays. ScreenshotNeo handles those steps and bills only clean shots; cache hits and failed page loads cost nothing.
  • For large jobs, ScreenshotNeo supports caching with a chosen TTL, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call and a usage API.

FAQ

What is the fastest shortcut?

Use Windows + Shift + S on Windows, Command + Shift + 4 on macOS, or Ctrl + Shift + Show windows on ChromeOS for a selected area.

Can I screenshot a scrolling page?

Desktop shortcuts capture the visible screen. Use an application’s full-page feature or a web screenshot service for a complete scrolling page.

Can I capture a video instead?

Yes. Windows Snipping Tool, macOS Screenshot, ChromeOS Capture and the GNOME overlay include recording controls on supported versions.

Why is my Print Screen key labeled differently?

Manufacturers use PrtSc, PrtScn, PrntScrn and Fn-layer labels for the same function. Check the keyboard legend or use the operating system’s screenshot app.
