How to Capture a Screenshot in Edge Browser
Capture a selected area or an entire webpage in Microsoft Edge, troubleshoot missing options, and automate screenshots with ScreenshotNeo.
Quick answer: Open the page in Microsoft Edge, select Settings and more (the three-dot menu), choose Screenshot (called Web Capture in older references), then choose Capture area or Capture full page. You can mark up the result, copy it, or save it. On supported installations, Ctrl+Shift+S opens the tool.
1. Capture a screenshot of the visible area
- Open the webpage in Edge and scroll to the content you want visible.
- Open Settings and more in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Screenshot. Some older Edge documentation and managed installations may call this Web Capture.
- Select Capture area.
- Drag over the part of the webpage to include.
- Use the markup tools if needed, then choose the control to copy or save the image.
The capture is tied to the webpage, so it can include content outside the browser chrome. If you need only what is currently visible on your monitor, use Windows Snipping Tool instead.
2. Capture an entire, long webpage
- Open the target page in Edge and wait for the content you need to finish loading.
- Open Settings and more and choose Screenshot.
- Choose Capture full page.
- Review the long capture. Add markup if required.
- Copy it to the clipboard or save it as an image.
Full-page capture is useful for documentation, bug reports and archiving pages that extend beyond the viewport. Dynamic pages can change while Edge scrolls through them, so repeat the capture after dismissing overlays or waiting for content to settle.
3. Use the keyboard shortcut
On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+S to open Edge’s Screenshot command when the feature is enabled. Microsoft lists this shortcut in its Edge policy documentation; a work or school policy can disable or hide the command. If the shortcut does nothing, open the three-dot menu and look for Screenshot, then check the troubleshooting section below.
4. Choose the right capture method
| Need | Best method | What it captures |
|---|---|---|
| A rectangle from a webpage | Edge Screenshot → Capture area | The selected webpage region |
| The complete webpage | Edge Screenshot → Capture full page | A scrolling capture of the page |
| Anything visible on the monitor | Windows Snipping Tool | A screen region, window, or full screen |
| Repeatable captures in a build or script | ScreenshotNeo | An API response containing PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF |
5. Windows Snipping Tool as a fallback
Snipping Tool is an operating-system capture workflow rather than Edge’s webpage capture feature. Press Windows+Shift+S, select rectangular, free-form, window or full-screen mode, and drag or click to capture. The result is copied to the clipboard and opened for editing and saving. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.
Use Snipping Tool when you need browser tabs, other applications, menus or a fixed screen region. Use Edge Screenshot when you need a clean webpage capture or the complete scrollable document.
6. Preparing a page for a clean capture
- Dismiss cookie and privacy dialogs before starting.
- Close chat bubbles, newsletter prompts and other overlays that cover content.
- Wait for lazy-loaded images, charts and fonts to appear.
- Set the page zoom to the level that makes text readable; reset with Ctrl+0 if necessary.
- For a selected-area capture, scroll the target into view before opening Screenshot.
- For a full-page capture, start at the top and avoid interacting with the page while Edge is scrolling.
7. Troubleshooting Edge screenshots
Screenshot is missing from the menu
Edge versions can use different labels, and older material calls the feature Web Capture. Update Edge, search the three-dot menu for Screenshot, and try Ctrl+Shift+S. On managed work or school devices, an administrator policy can control availability.
The shortcut does nothing
Another application may own the shortcut, or policy may disable Screenshot. Open the menu manually, test in a normal webpage tab, and ask your administrator whether the Edge Screenshot policy is enabled.
Full-page capture stops early
Some pages use nested scroll containers, virtualized lists or navigation that changes the document while it is being captured. Try closing sticky overlays, waiting for the page to finish loading, and using the page’s own print or export function when a stable document is required.
Part of the page is blank
The content may be lazy-loaded, blocked until interaction, or rendered after the capture started. Wait longer, scroll through the page once, sign in if appropriate, and capture again. Protected or cross-origin content can also behave differently from ordinary page elements.
The result contains a cookie banner or chat widget
Dismiss the overlay before capturing. Edge Screenshot records the page state it sees; it does not automatically remove consent platforms or chat tools.
The saved image looks different from the browser
Responsive layouts can change with viewport width, zoom, device pixel ratio and page state. Keep the window size and zoom consistent, and capture after animations settle.
I need a repeatable or server-side result
Manual Edge captures depend on a person, a desktop and the current page state. Use an automated browser workflow or an API when captures must run on a schedule, in CI, or for many URLs.
8. Performance, reliability and privacy considerations
- Speed: A selected-area capture is usually immediate. A full-page capture takes longer on pages with many images, scripts or nested sections.
- Reliability: Results can vary when content is personalized, time-sensitive or loaded after scrolling. Record the URL, viewport and capture time when screenshots are evidence.
- Privacy: Review visible account names, addresses, tokens and private messages before sharing an image.
- File size: Long pages and high-density displays create larger files. Crop or resize the image before attaching it to an issue if the full page is unnecessary.
- Cost: Edge Screenshot and Windows Snipping Tool are built-in desktop features. Automation adds browser hosting or API usage costs.
9. Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The API can capture a full page, a CSS-selected element, dark mode and custom viewports, and supports waits, custom CSS and JavaScript, headers, cookies, user agents, geolocation, request blocking, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs and bulk capture.
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the shot was billed.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all parameters.

An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
10. FAQ
Can Edge capture a page longer than the screen?
Yes. Choose Screenshot and then Capture full page. The result is a scrolling webpage capture.
What is the Edge screenshot shortcut?
Ctrl+Shift+S, when the Screenshot feature is available and not disabled by policy.
Is Web Capture different from Screenshot?
Web Capture is the older name used in some Edge references. Current menus may show Screenshot.
Can I capture only one element?
Edge’s built-in tool selects a region. For a repeatable CSS-element capture, use an automated browser or ScreenshotNeo’s element option.
Where does the screenshot go?
Use the capture panel’s copy or save command. Snipping Tool copies the result to the clipboard and opens it for editing.
