Quick answer: Firefox has a built-in Take Screenshot command that captures a selected region, a detected page part, the visible viewport or the entire page. On a Mac, Safari uses macOS Screenshot shortcuts. On iPhone, press the hardware screenshot buttons, then choose Full Page for a complete Safari webpage.

Use the browser or operating-system method when you need one capture interactively. For repeatable captures in code, CI jobs, documentation builds or AI workflows, use a screenshot API such as ScreenshotNeo.

1. Capture a screenshot in Firefox desktop

Firefox’s built-in tool works on Windows, Linux and macOS. Mozilla documents it as a way to capture visible parts of a page or an entire webpage, then copy or save the result.

  1. Open the page in Firefox.
  2. Right-click an empty area and select Take Screenshot. On macOS, Control-click if a normal right-click is unavailable.
  3. Alternatively, press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
  4. Choose one of the capture modes described below.
  5. Select Download to save an image in Firefox’s normal download folder, or Copy to put it on the clipboard. Press Escape to cancel.

Firefox capture modes

Mode What it captures Best use
Custom region A rectangle you drag A chart, notice or other small area
Page part The page section Firefox highlights under your pointer A paragraph, card, image or navigation area
Save visible The current viewport A quick screen-sized image
Save full page The scrollable document Documentation, landing pages and long articles

If you use the command frequently, add Screenshot to the toolbar from Menu → More Tools → Customize Toolbar. See Mozilla’s screenshot instructions for the current menu labels.

2. Use Firefox DevTools for full-page or element captures

DevTools is useful when the page menu is unavailable or when you need one exact DOM element.

Full-page capture

  1. Open DevTools with F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows/Linux), or Command+Option+I (macOS).
  2. Open DevTools Settings.
  3. Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
  4. Click the new camera button in the DevTools toolbar. Firefox saves the image to Downloads.

Capture one element

  1. Open the Inspector.
  2. Find the element in the HTML tree.
  3. Context-click it and choose Screenshot Node.

This captures the selected DOM node rather than the screen rectangle around it, which makes it more precise for component documentation and regression checks.

3. Capture Safari screenshots on a Mac

Safari on macOS uses the system Screenshot features. Prepare the Safari window, then use the shortcut that matches the output you need.

Shortcut Result
Shift+Command+3 Captures the entire screen
Shift+Command+4 Lets you drag a rectangle around the page or any area
Shift+Command+4, then Space Captures a Safari window or menu
Shift+Command+5 Opens Screenshot with screen, window and recording options

By default, captures appear on the desktop with a name such as Screen Shot [date] at [time]. The Screenshot app lets you change the save location, set a timer and include or exclude the pointer. Control-click the thumbnail to copy it to the clipboard. Apple’s Mac screenshot guide lists the current shortcuts.

Screenshot versus Save As

Safari’s File → Save As is not an image capture. Web Archive preserves page graphics and links, while Page Source saves HTML. Use macOS Screenshot when you need a PNG or other screen image; use Save As when you need an editable or archived copy of the page.

4. Capture a full-page Safari screenshot on iPhone

  1. Open the webpage in Safari.
  2. On Face ID models, quickly press and release the Side button and Volume Up together. On Home-button models, press Side and Home together.
  3. Tap the screenshot thumbnail that appears in the lower-left corner.
  4. Select Full Page at the top of the editor.
  5. Use the handles or page preview to adjust the capture, then save or share it.

Full Page extends beyond the visible display and can include the complete scrollable Safari webpage. Apple’s iPhone User Guide describes this workflow.

5. Choose the right method

Need Recommended method Why
One visible browser view Firefox Save visible or macOS Shift+Command+4 Fast and interactive
Entire Firefox document Firefox Save full page Captures the scrollable page without stitching manually
One exact HTML element Firefox DevTools Screenshot Node Targets the DOM element directly
Entire Safari page on iPhone iPhone screenshot → Full Page Includes content below the viewport
Repeatable or automated captures Screenshot API Runs from scripts, CI, jobs and backend services

6. Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is #1 for website screenshot APIs because it produces clean shots, bills only clean shots and has the lowest paid plan. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The examples below use the API documented at ScreenshotNeo docs.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing; the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Options for production captures

  • Capture the full page with lazy images loaded, or capture one element with a CSS selector.
  • Set dark mode, a device preset, any viewport size or a retina scale.
  • Create PDFs with paper size, margins, landscape mode and page ranges.
  • Render HTML/CSS, add custom CSS or JavaScript, click an element, hide selectors, or wait for a selector, delay or network idle.
  • Block ads, trackers, requests or resource types.
  • Send custom headers, cookies, a user agent or an Authorization header.
  • Set timezone and geolocation, use a transparent background or resize the image.
  • Choose a cache TTL, create signed links for public <img> tags, submit asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, capture up to 100 URLs per call and read usage through the usage API.
  • Use the OpenAPI specification or familiar parameter names when migrating from another screenshot API.

ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans are Starter $5 for 3,000, Growth $15 for 15,000, Pro $39 for 60,000, Scale $99 for 250,000 and Business $249 for 1,000,000; yearly billing gives two months free and every feature is on every plan.

7. Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause Fix
Take Screenshot is missing in Firefox Context menu was opened over a control or the command is hard to find Right-click an empty area, use the keyboard shortcut, or add Screenshot through Customize Toolbar.
Firefox full-page capture misses content Content loads only after scrolling or interaction Wait for lazy content, scroll through the page once, then retry; use DevTools full-page capture if the page menu fails.
Only the visible Safari screen was saved macOS shortcuts capture screen geometry On iPhone, use screenshot → Full Page. On Mac, use a browser or API workflow designed for full documents.
Safari saved an archive instead of an image File → Save As was used Use Shift-Command-3, Shift-Command-4 or Shift-Command-5 for an image.
Screenshot thumbnail disappears on iPhone The editor was not opened quickly Open Photos and edit the latest screenshot; repeat the capture when Full Page is required.
Automated capture contains cookie banners or chat bubbles The browser was captured before cleanup Use ScreenshotNeo’s consent, popup and widget removal, or hide selectors with custom CSS.
API response is not an image The target failed, timed out or triggered a bot check Inspect X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed, increase waiting conditions, adjust headers or user agent, and retry only when the verdict indicates a recoverable load.

8. Performance, reliability and cost notes

  • For a one-off screenshot, built-in Firefox or macOS tools have no service cost and require no setup.
  • Full-page pages with large images, fonts and client-side rendering take longer than a viewport capture. Wait for a selector, delay or network idle when visual completeness matters.
  • Element captures are usually smaller and easier to compare than full-page images. Use a CSS selector when the component is the subject.
  • For repeat jobs, caching with a chosen TTL reduces duplicate work. Bulk capture supports up to 100 URLs per call.
  • Use asynchronous jobs and signed webhooks when a capture does not belong in a request timeout. Signed links are useful when a generated image must be loaded by a public page.
  • ScreenshotNeo does not bill cache hits, failed loads, blank pages, timeouts or bot checks. Check the verdict and billing headers in logs so your accounting matches the result.

9. FAQ

Can Firefox capture a full webpage?

Yes. Choose Save full page from Take Screenshot, or enable the DevTools full-page screenshot button.

Can Safari on Mac capture an entire scrolling webpage?

macOS shortcuts capture the screen, a selection or a window. For a complete scrolling document, use Safari on iPhone’s Full Page option or an automated webpage capture tool.

Where does Firefox save screenshots?

Firefox downloads them to its normal download folder. DevTools captures are also saved to Downloads.

Does iPhone Full Page work for every app?

It is designed for supported scrollable content such as a Safari webpage. The Full Page option appears in the screenshot editor when the content supports it.

What format should I use for automated screenshots?

PNG is useful for crisp text and transparency, JPEG for smaller photographic images, WebP for a compact modern web asset, and PDF when the deliverable is a document rather than a bitmap.
