How to Capture a Small Portion of Your Screen

Capture a selected screen area on Windows, Mac, or Chromebook, learn when cropping is different, and save or share the result.

To screenshot just part of your display, use your operating system’s region-capture tool: on Windows press Windows logo key + Shift + S; on Mac drag the screenshot crosshair over the area; on Chromebook press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows and select the area. These methods capture only the selected region. Cropping is different: it trims an image after you have already captured it.

1. Choose the right kind of capture

Use a selected region when you want only a small part of the screen. Choose a window capture when you want one application or dialog, and a full-screen capture when you need everything visible. A freeform capture can follow an irregular outline where the operating system supports it.

For an actual screen screenshot, use the steps for the device that displays the content. A webpage screenshot API captures a webpage rendered by a browser; it does not capture a crop of your physical desktop or another application.

2. Capture a selected area on Windows

  1. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
  2. When the screen dims and the Snipping Tool overlay appears, select Rectangle for a conventional crop. Snipping Tool also provides Window, Full screen, and Freeform modes.
  3. Click and drag around the part you want. Release the mouse button to take the snip.
  4. Use the Snipping Tool notification or app to review and save it. The capture is also copied so you can paste it into another app.

If the shortcut is unavailable, open Start, search for Snipping Tool, choose a mode, and select New. For a menu that closes when you click elsewhere, open Snipping Tool first and use its delay control before selecting the capture mode. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.

3. Capture a selected area on Mac

  1. Press Shift + Command + 5 to open Screenshot controls, or use the Screenshot app on macOS Mojave 10.14 or later.
  2. Choose the option to capture a selected portion.
  3. Drag the crosshair across the area you want. Adjust the selection before capturing if needed.
  4. Capture the selection, then use the thumbnail or the configured save location to review and find the file.

Apple also documents selecting an area by clicking and dragging the crosshair. Some apps restrict screenshots of their windows, so a shortcut can work correctly while the protected content remains unavailable. Consult Apple’s Mac screenshot guide.

4. Capture a selected area on Chromebook

  1. Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key is the overview key on the Chromebook keyboard.
  2. Select the partial screenshot option in the Screen Capture controls if it is not already selected.
  3. Drag across the screen area to capture it, then release.
  4. Open the capture from the notification or its save location to copy or share it.

Chromebooks also provide Screen Capture from the system interface. If an external keyboard has no Show windows key, Google documents Ctrl + Shift + F5 as the alternative shortcut. See Chromebook Screen Capture help and the shortcut reference.

5. Android phones and tablets

Android screenshot controls vary by manufacturer, model, and software version. The available information here does not establish one universal method to select only part of the display at capture time. Use the screenshot instructions for your phone or tablet model; if the standard Android instructions do not match, Google advises consulting the device maker’s support. Some devices offer a crop control after taking a regular screenshot, which is post-capture editing rather than selected-region capture.

6. Capture on iPhone or iPad

Button combinations depend on the device, and the research available for this guide did not verify a universal iPhone or iPad workflow for selecting a screen region before capture. Use Apple’s current instructions for your particular device. If the built-in editor offers cropping after a screenshot, remember that this trims the saved image after the full screenshot was taken.

7. Capture a webpage area for documentation

If you need a small portion of a webpage repeatedly—for a report, visual check, or generated asset—you may want to capture a specific page element instead of selecting a rectangle on your desktop. An element capture targets page content by CSS selector; it is not a screenshot of the operating system screen. When capturing manually, make sure the page is at the right scroll position and that the content has finished loading.

Or skip the browser setup

For webpage captures, ScreenshotNeo takes a screenshot from one GET request. The API supports capturing one element by CSS selector, along with full-page screenshots, image formats, viewport settings, and other capture controls. It cannot crop arbitrary content from your physical desktop. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
await Bun.write('shot.webp', new Uint8Array(await res.arrayBuffer()));

In each example, replace the URL with the page to capture and supply your API key. The Node.js example uses Bun’s file-writing helper; with Node.js, write the returned buffer using node:fs/promises. To target a single element, configure the CSS selector option documented by ScreenshotNeo.

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before a webpage capture; those cleanup steps can be disabled individually. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots each month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is on every plan. 8. Save, copy, and crop the result

  • Save a file: use the screenshot preview or capture app’s save control, then note the chosen folder and file type.
  • Paste into another app: many desktop capture tools copy the image to the clipboard; use the destination app’s Paste command.
  • Crop after capture: open the saved image in an editor and trim it. This can be convenient, but it may mean the original screenshot briefly contained more information than the final crop.
  • Check clarity: make the selected area large enough to keep small text readable, especially if the image will be resized or shared.

9. Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause What to do
The shortcut takes a full-screen image A full-screen mode or a different key combination was used. Open the capture controls and choose Rectangle/partial capture explicitly. On Chromebook, use Shift + Ctrl + Show windows.
Nothing happens when pressing the keys The key names differ by device, a keyboard lacks the relevant key, or the tool was not launched. Use the system capture app or menu. On Chromebook with an external keyboard, try Ctrl + Shift + F5.
The selection misses the intended area The drag started or ended at the wrong point, or the pointer was released early. Cancel and capture again, taking care to start at one corner and release at the opposite corner. Crop afterward if only a small adjustment is needed.
A menu disappears before it can be captured Opening the capture overlay changes focus and closes transient menus. On Windows, use Snipping Tool’s delay feature, then open the menu during the countdown.
The screenshot is blank or protected content is missing Some apps restrict screenshots of their windows. Try the app’s own export or sharing feature. A different shortcut may not bypass an app restriction.
The image is hard to find The capture was copied to the clipboard, saved to a default folder, or awaits confirmation in a preview. Check the notification or capture app, paste into an image editor, and use Save As to choose a known folder.

10. Quality, privacy, and reliability

  • Capture only what is needed. A region is easier to inspect and share than a full display and reduces the chance of exposing unrelated tabs, messages, or account details.
  • Prefer direct region capture for one-off work. It avoids saving a larger image and cropping a copy later.
  • Use a delay for transient UI. Menus and tooltips can disappear as capture controls take focus.
  • Verify the saved file. Check its dimensions and confirm the expected region is present before attaching it to a ticket or report.
  • For repeatable webpage captures, automate the browser or use a screenshot API. Local screen shortcuts are manual and tied to the active display; website capture tools operate on page URLs and can target page elements.

FAQ

Can I screenshot a small area without installing an app?

Yes. Windows, macOS, and Chromebook include built-in region capture controls.

Is cropping the same as capturing a region?

No. Region capture selects pixels before taking the screenshot. Cropping removes pixels from an image that already exists.

Can I select an irregular shape?

Windows Snipping Tool includes a Freeform mode. Other platforms may offer different selection controls.

Can a webpage screenshot API capture part of my monitor?

No. It captures a rendered webpage from a URL. Use the operating system’s capture tool for your desktop or application screen.
