How to Capture a Video Screenshot in Windows 10
Capture a video on Windows 10 with Game Bar or Snipping Tool, or extract a clean frame in VLC. Follow exact steps, fixes, and ScreenshotNeo options.
Use Windows + Alt + Print Screen for a quick screenshot of the active video app. Use Windows + Shift + S when you need to select only the player or a region. If you need the video’s actual frame without window borders, controls or subtitles, pause the file in VLC and choose Video > Snapshot.
These are two different jobs:
- Display screenshot: captures the pixels currently shown on your Windows 10 screen, including player controls, subtitles, borders and overlays.
- Player snapshot: extracts the current frame from a video file, usually without the media player’s chrome.
1. Capture the active video with Xbox Game Bar
- Open the video and bring its player window to the foreground.
- Press Windows + Alt + Print Screen.
- Windows saves a PNG in
Videos\Captures. Open File Explorer and choose Videos, then Captures.
You can also press Windows + G, open the Capture widget and select the camera icon. Microsoft documents both the Game Bar camera control and the keyboard shortcut.
If Game Bar does nothing
- Press Windows + G once before using the shortcut and confirm that Xbox Game Bar is enabled.
- Click the video window first. Game Bar is designed for games and apps; it may not capture the desktop, File Explorer or protected playback surfaces.
- Check Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar and enable the Game Bar switch if it is disabled.
- If the video is protected by its streaming service, a black or blocked capture can be expected. Follow the service’s capture and copyright terms.
2. Capture only the video player or a selected area
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- Choose Rectangular snip, Freeform snip, Window snip or Full-screen snip.
- Select the video area. A notification appears after the capture.
- Click the notification to open Snip & Sketch or Snipping Tool, then copy, annotate or save the image.
On Windows 10, the app may be named Snip & Sketch or Snipping Tool, depending on the build and updates. The Windows + Shift + S shortcut is the relevant still-image workflow. The newer Windows + Shift + R video-recording shortcut is not universal on Windows 10.
Getting a clean crop
- Pause the video before selecting the region so motion blur does not change between selection and capture.
- Resize the player first, then use Window snip if you want the complete player window.
- Use Rectangular snip for a player image without surrounding windows.
- Include subtitles deliberately: they are part of a display screenshot, but not part of a clean source-frame extraction.
3. Extract an exact frame from a local video with VLC
VLC is the better choice when you want the video’s frame rather than a picture of the player window.
- Install and open VLC, then choose Media > Open File.
- Play the video and pause at the desired moment. Use the frame-step control or the timeline to refine the position.
- Choose Video > Snapshot.
- VLC saves a PNG by default, normally in your Pictures folder.
VideoLAN documents that the snapshot shortcut can vary by VLC build or customization. You can change the snapshot directory and image format under VLC preferences. If the saved image is not where expected, open Tools > Preferences, switch to the video settings, and inspect the snapshot options.
Display screenshot versus VLC snapshot
| Need | Best method | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Fast image of an active app | Xbox Game Bar | Screen pixels from the focused app, saved as PNG |
| Only part of the player | Windows + Shift + S | A manually selected crop with optional annotations |
| Exact frame from a local file | VLC Snapshot | The video frame without ordinary window borders |
| Protected streaming playback | Depends on the service | Capture may be black or disabled |
4. Improve frame quality
- Pause on a keyframe and step forward or backward when VLC permits it. A paused display screenshot can still contain motion blur from the source frame.
- Maximize the player before using a display screenshot. More displayed pixels produce a larger capture, but do not create detail absent from the source.
- Disable overlays, playback controls and notifications before capturing if they are not wanted.
- For a source-frame image, prefer VLC over a screen crop because scaling, desktop composition and color management can alter the displayed pixels.
- Save PNG for text, diagrams and still frames with sharp edges. Use another format only when file size matters.
5. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Windows + Alt + Print Screen has no effect | Game Bar is disabled or the app is not focused | Press Windows + G, enable Game Bar, focus the player and retry. |
| No image appears in Videos\Captures | You are checking the wrong folder or the capture did not complete | Open the Capture widget to confirm the action, then check the Captures folder under Videos. |
| The screenshot is black | Protected playback surface or capture restriction | Use only methods permitted by the service. A protected stream may intentionally block screenshots. |
| The crop includes controls or borders | The selection was made around the whole player | Pause playback, hide controls, and use Rectangular snip around the picture area. |
| The VLC image is not in Pictures | VLC’s snapshot directory was changed | Check VLC preferences for the snapshot directory and format. |
| The VLC frame is one moment early or late | The timeline is approximate or the video is between decoded frames | Pause, use frame stepping, and take another snapshot. |
| The image is blurry | Motion blur exists in the source or the player is displayed at a small size | Try a nearby frame, enlarge the player for a display capture, or use VLC for the source frame. |
| Subtitles are missing | You used a source-frame snapshot | Use Game Bar or Snipping Tool if subtitles shown on screen must be included. |
6. Performance, reliability and file handling
- Game Bar and Snipping Tool complete locally and do not require an upload, so they are useful when the video must remain on the PC.
- VLC is deterministic for local files: the output depends on the selected decoded frame and VLC’s configured snapshot folder and format.
- For repeated captures, keep the player at a stable size, pause before each capture and use a consistent naming scheme such as
video-001.png. - Large full-screen PNGs use more storage. Crop to the required region or convert copies after capture when smaller files are needed.
- Do not assume a screenshot represents the original video frame if the player applies scaling, HDR conversion, overlays or color adjustments.
7. Or skip the browser setup
If the source is a public web page rather than a local Windows video file, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF through one request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

FAQ
Can I capture just the video image and not the player?
Use VLC Snapshot for a local file. For a web player, use Windows + Shift + S and crop the displayed video area.
Where does Xbox Game Bar save screenshots?
By default, Windows saves them as PNG files in Videos\Captures.
Why is a streaming screenshot black?
Protected playback can block screen capture. Use only capture methods and sharing permitted by the service.
Is VLC better than Game Bar?
VLC is better for an exact frame from a local file. Game Bar is faster when you need the pixels currently visible in an app.
Can ScreenshotNeo capture a local Windows video file?
The ScreenshotNeo call captures a URL. The Windows and VLC methods above are the appropriate workflows for a video file stored on your PC.
