Use Windows Snipping Tool to capture a visible part of a webpage without installing software. Learn the shortcuts, save options, and how to capture longer pages.

On a Windows 10 or Windows 11 laptop, press Windows key + Shift + S. Choose a snip mode, select the visible part of the webpage, then open the notification to edit and save the screenshot in Snipping Tool. This uses Windows’ built-in screenshot tool; you do not need to install another app.

Capture a visible part of a webpage

  1. Open the webpage in your browser and position the content you want to capture on screen.
  2. Press Windows + Shift + S. The screen dims and the snipping toolbar appears.
  3. Choose Rectangular snip for a clean selection, or use another mode described below.
  4. Drag over the page area to capture it. The screenshot is copied to the clipboard, and Windows displays a notification.
  5. Select the notification to open the image in Snipping Tool. Crop or annotate if needed, then select Save or press Ctrl + S. Choose a folder and filename.

Microsoft describes Snipping Tool as a way to “take a snapshot to copy words or images from all or part of your PC screen.” Its instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.

Choose the right capture mode

Mode What it captures Useful when
Rectangular A rectangle you draw on screen You want just a visible section of a webpage without surrounding desktop content.
Freeform An area traced with a freehand selection You need an irregular shape, such as content surrounded by other windows.
Window A selected window, such as the browser You want the browser window without selecting its area manually.
Full-screen The full display You want everything visible on the screen.

For a typical webpage screenshot, rectangular snip is the most precise choice. Window capture may include browser tabs, the address bar, and other browser controls. Full-screen capture may also include desktop elements beyond the page.

Other built-in keyboard shortcuts

  • Print Screen copies an image of the whole screen to the clipboard.
  • Alt + Print Screen copies the active window.
  • Windows + Shift + S opens the Snipping Tool capture overlay.

On some laptop keyboards, Print Screen is abbreviated or shares a key with another function. Check the key labels and your keyboard’s function-key behavior. You can also search for and open Snipping Tool from Start. Microsoft documents the clipboard shortcuts in its guide to copying window or screen contents.

Print Screen and Alt + Print Screen copy the image; they do not necessarily save a file immediately. Paste the result into an app that accepts images, or open Snipping Tool to review and save the capture.

Can Windows capture a whole long webpage?

The Snipping Tool modes capture what is on screen. They do not automatically scroll and combine a long webpage into one tall screenshot. To capture content below the visible area, you can take multiple snips while scrolling, or use a page-copy workflow if an image is not required.

For a print-oriented copy, Microsoft Edge can print a webpage with Ctrl + P. Print output uses a print layout and is not a screenshot image. Edge’s print options include settings such as background graphics; availability of page formatting can depend on the page. See Microsoft’s instructions for printing in Edge.

Save, edit, and share the screenshot

After selecting the capture notification, inspect the snip in Snipping Tool. You can crop or annotate it, copy it with Ctrl + C, and save it with Ctrl + S. Pick a descriptive filename and a location you can find later, such as Pictures or a project folder. The image is a capture of the visible screen, so browser zoom, page layout, and display scaling affect its apparent size and framing.

Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause Fix
The shortcut does nothing The key combination was mistyped, a keyboard utility intercepted it, or the keyboard has a function-layer key. Press the Windows, Shift, and S keys together. Search for Snipping Tool in Start and launch it directly. Check whether your laptop requires Fn for special keys.
The screenshot is missing after capture The snip was copied to the clipboard, but the notification was dismissed or not selected. Open Snipping Tool from Start and check whether the capture is available. For Print Screen captures, paste into an image-capable app and save from there.
The capture only shows part of the webpage The snip records the screen area that was visible when you selected it. Scroll the page to the desired section and capture again. For one continuous long-page image, use a tool designed for full-page capture.
The browser controls appear in the image You captured the window or full screen rather than only the page content. Use rectangular snip and select the webpage area, or crop the image in Snipping Tool.
The saved image is in the wrong folder or format The save dialog used a previous location or filename. Press Ctrl + S in Snipping Tool, select the intended folder, and review the filename and available file type before saving.

Performance, reliability, and cost

For a single visible region, the built-in shortcut is a quick, offline screen capture and has no separate software cost. It captures the browser’s rendered pixels as they appear on your display, so the result depends on what has loaded and what is visible. If a page is still loading, wait and capture again. For repeatable captures across many URLs, consistent viewport sizes, or content beyond the current screen, a browser automation workflow or screenshot API is more suitable than manual snipping.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Make one GET request to capture a page; the result can be PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The API can also capture full pages with lazy images loaded and offers options including viewport and device presets, selector capture, waiting, and custom CSS. Read the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

  • Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off.
  • Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
  • An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.
  • The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work on both Windows 10 and Windows 11?

Yes. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guidance covers both versions.

Does taking a snip install anything?

No additional screenshot app is required for the built-in Snipping Tool workflow.

Why is my screenshot blurry or too small?

A screen snip reflects the displayed pixels and scaling at capture time. Increase browser zoom or adjust the page and display layout before capturing if the content is difficult to read.

Can I share the screenshot without saving it first?

Yes. The capture is copied to the clipboard, so you can paste it into an app that accepts images. Save a separate file when you need a reusable image on disk.
