How to Capture a Screenshot of a Webpage on PC

Capture a visible webpage, a full page, or a PDF on Windows with built-in tools—and automate clean screenshots with ScreenshotNeo.

By the ScreenshotNeo team1 October 20267 min read

For a visible webpage on Windows 10 or 11, open the page and press Windows+Shift+S. Choose rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen snip, then select the Snipping Tool notification to copy, edit, or save the image. This captures what is currently visible. To capture the entire page from top to bottom, use a full-page browser extension such as OneNote Web Clipper, or use an automated screenshot service.

Choose the right capture method

Goal Best method Result
Capture the visible part of a page Windows+Shift+S PNG image of a selected region, window, or screen
Capture an entire scrolling webpage OneNote Web Clipper Full Page Full-page screenshot image saved to OneNote
Capture only one area Snipping Tool rectangle or Web Clipper Region Image of the selected area
Create a printable record Ctrl+P, then Save as PDF Print-layout PDF, which may reflow the page
Capture pages repeatedly or in code ScreenshotNeo API PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request

Capture the visible webpage with Snipping Tool

  1. Open the webpage in Edge, Chrome, or another Windows browser.
  2. Scroll and resize the window until the content you need is visible.
  3. Press Windows+Shift+S. Windows opens the Snipping Tool overlay.
  4. Select a mode: Rectangle for a precise area, Freeform for an irregular shape, Window for the browser window, or Full screen for every monitor area.
  5. Drag over the webpage or select the window. The result is copied and a notification opens Snipping Tool.
  6. Use the editor to crop or annotate. Press Ctrl+C to copy or Ctrl+S to save, depending on your Windows version.

Microsoft documents Snipping Tool for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The interface and automatic-save behavior can vary by version; if no editor appears, select the Snipping Tool notification or open Snipping Tool from Start and use New. The Print Screen key is another Windows-documented way to copy the entire screen.

Make a sharper, more useful visible capture

  • Zoom the browser to 100% before selecting a region if you need predictable dimensions.
  • Hide unrelated tabs, bookmarks, and notifications before using Window or Full screen mode.
  • Wait for images, charts, and fonts to finish loading.
  • Use Rectangle mode for a page section so browser chrome is excluded.
  • Check the saved file after capture; a notification or focus change can cause the wrong window to be selected.

Capture a full webpage from top to bottom

Snipping Tool captures the screen, so a page longer than the viewport requires a different workflow. Microsoft’s OneNote Web Clipper documentation describes Full Page and Region screenshot-image modes for Edge and Chrome.

  1. Install OneNote Web Clipper for your browser and review the permissions it requests.
  2. Open the webpage you want to capture.
  3. Click the Web Clipper extension.
  4. Choose Full Page for the whole scrolling page or Region for a selected area.
  5. Send the result to your OneNote notebook.

Web Clipper also offers Article, which saves page text and images as editable content. That is different from a screenshot and may omit layout details, interactive controls, or content loaded only after scrolling.

When full-page capture fails

  • Lazy-loaded images are blank: scroll through the page first, or use a capture tool that explicitly loads lazy content.
  • The page stops partway down: try disabling aggressive script blockers for that site and capture again.
  • A fixed header repeats: use a region capture or crop the repeated header after saving.
  • The page requires a login: confirm the extension is allowed on that site and that the session is still signed in.
  • Animations change between sections: pause media and wait for transitions before starting the capture.

Save a webpage as a PDF

A PDF is a print-oriented document, not a pixel-for-pixel screenshot. Text can reflow, backgrounds can be omitted, and page breaks can change the layout.

Chrome

  1. Open the page and press Ctrl+P.
  2. Choose the desired printer or Save as PDF.
  3. Set layout, paper size, margins, scale, and any background option available.
  4. Save the PDF.

Edge

  1. Press Ctrl+P.
  2. Choose a printer and configure layout, margins, scale, and Background graphics when available.
  3. If the site supports it, open Immersive Reader (Microsoft documents F9 where available) for a less cluttered print view.
  4. Print or save the result as a PDF.

Automate webpage screenshots with ScreenshotNeo

For scheduled captures, many URLs, consistent viewport settings, or pages that need cleanup before capture, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from a GET request. Cookie and consent banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each step can be turned off.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the current parameter reference. Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const bytes = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
require('fs').writeFileSync('shot.webp', bytes);

Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause Fix
Windows+Shift+S does nothing Shortcut is intercepted or Snipping Tool is unavailable Open Snipping Tool from Start and select New; check keyboard and notification settings.
The capture is the wrong size Browser zoom, display scaling, or a different monitor Set browser zoom deliberately, select Rectangle mode, and verify the active display.
Only the visible viewport was saved Screen snipping cannot scroll Use Web Clipper Full Page or an automated full-page capture.
PDF looks different from the page Print CSS and pagination changed layout Use a screenshot image for visual fidelity; adjust scale, margins, and background graphics for a PDF.
ScreenshotNeo returns an error Invalid key, malformed URL, or unreachable target Check the API key, URL encoding, response status, and that the target is publicly reachable.
ScreenshotNeo output is blank or incomplete Page timeout, bot check, delayed content, or selector timing Use a selector or network-idle wait, block problematic resources, or provide required headers and cookies.
Unexpected billing result The response was classified as a clean shot, cache hit, or failed page Inspect the X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed response headers.

Performance, reliability, and cost

  • Local captures: Snipping Tool is immediate and has no service cost, but it depends on the current screen, browser state, and manual timing.
  • Full-page extensions: They are convenient for occasional work but require installation, permissions, and a OneNote destination.
  • Automation: Reuse caching with a TTL when the page does not change often. Use asynchronous jobs and signed webhooks for slow or high-volume pages, and bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call.
  • Billing: ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed.
  • Plans: Free includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans are Starter $5 for 3,000, Growth $15 for 15,000, Pro $39 for 60,000, Scale $99 for 250,000, and Business $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is included on every plan.

FAQ

Can I screenshot just the webpage without browser controls?

Yes. Use Snipping Tool Rectangle mode around the page content, or Window mode and crop the browser frame afterward.

Is a full-page screenshot the same as saving a PDF?

No. A full-page screenshot preserves the rendered page as an image. Printing creates a document layout that can reflow and paginate.

Can I capture a page that is taller than my monitor without an extension?

Not with a normal screen snip. Use a full-page capture workflow such as Web Clipper or an automated screenshot API.

Can an automated capture include a logged-in page?

ScreenshotNeo supports custom cookies, headers, user agents, and Authorization values. Only provide credentials to a service and workflow you are authorized to use.

Which format should I choose?

PNG is useful for sharp UI details, JPEG for smaller photographic images, WebP for compact web delivery, and PDF for print-oriented documents.
