How to Capture a Website as an Image in Firefox
Capture a visible area, page element, selection, or full webpage in Firefox, then download or copy the image with these steps.
Firefox includes a built-in screenshot tool. Open the page, right-click an empty area and choose Take Screenshot, or press Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows/Linux or Command + Shift + S on macOS. Choose a region, page element, full page, or visible viewport, then select Download or Copy.
Choose the right Firefox capture mode
| Mode | What it captures | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Custom region | An area you drag around | One chart, paragraph, or visual detail |
| Page element | A highlighted HTML element | A card, image, table, or component |
| Save full page | The complete page, including content below the fold | Documentation, articles, and long landing pages |
| Save visible | Only the current viewport | Bug reports and what is currently on screen |
Firefox saves a downloaded capture as a PNG in its default download folder. Copy places the image on the clipboard so you can paste it into an editor, issue tracker, document, or chat.
Step-by-step: capture a website in Firefox
- Open the webpage in Firefox and wait for the content you need to appear.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and select Take Screenshot. On macOS, Control-click opens the context menu if a normal right-click is unavailable.
- Instead, use Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows/Linux or Command + Shift + S on macOS.
- Pick a capture target:
- Drag across a custom region. Use the boundary markers to adjust its edges.
- Move the pointer over the page and click a highlighted element.
- Choose Save full page for the entire document.
- Choose Save visible for the current viewport.
- Select Download to save the PNG or Copy to put it on the clipboard.
These steps follow Mozilla’s current instructions for Firefox Screenshots. See Mozilla’s screenshot documentation for the interface reference.
Make Screenshot easier to reach
You can add a Screenshot button to Firefox’s toolbar:
- Open the Firefox menu.
- Choose More Tools, then Customize Toolbar….
- Drag the Screenshot button onto the toolbar.
- Select Done.
The button is useful when a page blocks the context menu or when you take captures frequently.
Keyboard controls and accessibility
Firefox’s screenshot interface supports keyboard movement of the selection crosshair. Use the arrow keys to move it, and use Ctrl (Windows/Linux) or Command (macOS) plus an arrow key to move toward a viewport edge. Mozilla documents a limitation on Wayland: keyboard movement of the crosshair does not work there. If that happens, drag with the pointer, use the element picker, or switch to the toolbar button.
Getting a clean full-page capture
Before choosing Save full page, prepare the page so the output represents the state you want:
- Close menus, dialogs, cookie prompts, and chat panels that cover content.
- Scroll through the page once if images or other sections load only after scrolling.
- Wait for fonts, charts, and animations to finish rendering.
- Check that you are on the correct URL and account state.
- For a very long page, consider capturing sections separately if one image becomes difficult to view or share.
Firefox’s built-in tool captures what the browser renders. It does not provide an API for setting a viewport, injecting CSS or JavaScript, supplying custom headers, or repeating captures automatically.
Download versus copy
| Action | Result | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Download | Saves a PNG to Firefox’s default download folder | You need a file for storage, upload, or versioning |
| Copy | Places the image on the system clipboard | You want to paste it immediately into another app |
After copying, paste with Ctrl + V on Windows/Linux or Command + V on macOS. Mozilla also documents Ctrl/Command + S for saving and Ctrl/Command + C for copying in the screenshot workflow.
Troubleshooting Firefox screenshots
“Take Screenshot” is missing from the context menu
Use the keyboard shortcut, or add the Screenshot button through Menu → More Tools → Customize Toolbar…. Make sure you right-click an ordinary page area rather than a browser toolbar or a control that supplies its own context menu.
The shortcut does nothing
Confirm the platform shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + S for Windows/Linux and Command + Shift + S for macOS. A desktop shortcut manager or another application may be intercepting the keys; use the toolbar button to verify that Firefox itself is working.
The full-page image is incomplete
Wait for lazy-loaded images, charts, and fonts, then try Save full page again. Some pages change their content while you capture them; pause animations or close overlays first. If the page remains unstable, capture smaller regions or individual elements.
The crosshair will not move with the keyboard
Mozilla notes that keyboard crosshair movement does not work on Wayland. Drag the selection with the pointer or select a highlighted element instead.
The wrong element is selected
Move the pointer slowly until the desired element is highlighted. For precise control, drag a custom region around the element. Elements with overlapping layers, sticky headers, or transparent areas may be easier to capture by region.
Copy does not appear in the destination app
Try Download and open the PNG from Firefox’s default download folder. Clipboard behavior can vary by desktop environment and application, especially on Linux.
Privacy and interaction data
Mozilla says Firefox Screenshots records interaction events such as using Copy or Save full page. It says the feature does not collect the page URL or details of the captured image, and its support page links to Firefox’s privacy notice and opt-out information. Review those controls if your organization limits product telemetry.
When an automated screenshot API is a better fit
Firefox is convenient for an occasional manual image. An API is more suitable when you need repeatable captures, a server-side workflow, custom browser conditions, or many URLs. ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try for this use case because it removes consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and offers the lowest paid plan.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The request below captures a page without opening Firefox. The ScreenshotNeo API documentation lists the available options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
You can also use full-page capture, CSS element selection, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, click actions, selector waits, delays, network-idle waits, request blocking, custom headers and cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting, and PDF settings.
- Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off.
- Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are never billed. The response reports the result in
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billedheaders. - An MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients use
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdf. - The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Performance, reliability, and cost notes
- Manual Firefox: Best for one-off work where you can inspect the result immediately. Time depends on page load, rendering, and your own interaction.
- Repeatability: Use the same viewport, waits, device setting, and cleanup options when comparing captures over time.
- Failures: For automated jobs, inspect the HTTP response and ScreenshotNeo’s verdict and billing headers so failed loads and cache hits are distinguishable from billable clean shots.
- Cost: Firefox’s built-in capture has no ScreenshotNeo usage charge. ScreenshotNeo has a free monthly tier and fixed paid tiers; yearly billing provides two months free.
- Caching: Set a cache TTL when repeated requests can reuse an image. Disable or shorten caching when the page changes frequently.
