How to Capture a Website Screenshot in Chrome on Windows 11

Capture the visible Chrome window with Snipping Tool, or save a full webpage with Chrome DevTools on Windows 11.

By the ScreenshotNeo team1 October 20266 min read

On Windows 11, use Windows logo key + Shift + S to capture the visible part of a Chrome page. Choose a region, window, or full-screen snip, then save or copy it in Snipping Tool. To capture the entire webpage, including content below the fold, open Chrome DevTools with Ctrl+Shift+I, open the command menu with Ctrl+Shift+P, search for Capture full size screenshot, and run it. That full-page workflow comes from a Google Chrome Community answer, so the command name or placement may differ in a future Chrome version.

Choose the right capture method

What you need Use Result
A visible section of the page Snipping Tool region capture Only the selected rectangle
The Chrome window Snipping Tool window capture The current browser window
The whole screen Snipping Tool full-screen capture or PrtSc Everything visible on the display
The complete webpage below the fold Chrome DevTools full-size screenshot A tall image of the document

Capture the visible Chrome page with Snipping Tool

  1. Open the webpage in Chrome and scroll until the content you need is visible.
  2. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. Microsoft documents this shortcut for opening the Snipping Tool overlay.
  3. Choose a mode from the overlay: rectangular, window, freeform, or full-screen snip.
  4. Select the page area or Chrome window. The result opens in Snipping Tool.
  5. Edit or annotate if needed. Press Ctrl+S to save the image, or Ctrl+C to copy it.

Rectangular capture

Use rectangular mode when you need a specific article section, chart, or error message. Drag from one corner to the other. The selection is based on what is currently visible, so content below the fold is not included.

Window capture

Use window mode when you want the current Chrome window without manually drawing around it. Make sure the intended Chrome window is visible before selecting it.

Freeform capture

Freeform mode follows the outline you draw. It is useful for isolating an irregular part of a page, but rectangular captures are usually easier to align and compare.

Full-screen capture and Print Screen

Snipping Tool also supports a full-screen mode. Microsoft documents PrtSc as a way to copy a static full-screen snapshot to the clipboard. Laptop keyboards vary, so the physical key combination may depend on the device; Windows logo key + Shift + S is the consistent shortcut documented for opening the overlay.

Capture the entire webpage with Chrome DevTools

A screen snip cannot include content that is below the viewport. For a full document image, use this community-described DevTools procedure:

  1. Open the target page in Chrome.
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+I to open Developer Tools.
  3. Press Ctrl+Shift+P to open the DevTools command menu.
  4. Type Capture full size screenshot.
  5. Select that command. Chrome downloads a full-page image, normally as a PNG.

The Chrome Community source describes this workflow in a March 6, 2025 answer and cautions that community content may not be verified or current. If the command does not appear, update Chrome, confirm DevTools has focus, and search for “screenshot” to see the commands available in your version.

When full-size capture is the better choice

  • Archiving a long article or documentation page.
  • Reviewing a landing page in one image.
  • Sharing a design review without sending multiple viewport snippets.
  • Comparing a page before and after a change.

Limitations of a browser full-page image

  • Very long pages can produce large files and may take longer to render.
  • Animations, video, rotating carousels, and lazy-loaded content can change while Chrome captures the page.
  • Sticky headers may appear repeatedly or behave differently as Chrome stitches the document.
  • Pages behind authentication, bot checks, or consent dialogs may not capture the content you expect.

Make the capture readable and repeatable

  • Wait for fonts, images, and charts to finish loading before capturing.
  • Set the browser zoom to a consistent value when comparing screenshots.
  • Close unrelated windows and notifications before a window or full-screen snip.
  • For a long page, check the downloaded image at 100% zoom for clipped sections.
  • Use a descriptive filename that includes the page and date.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API when you need repeatable captures from code or automation. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The API accepts options for full-page capture, an element selected by CSS, dark mode, device presets, viewport size, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, cookies, headers, user agents, geolocation, timezone, request blocking, caching, resizing, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture, and more. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the complete parameter list.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));

Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause Fix
The shortcut does nothing Another application intercepts it, or focus is elsewhere Click the Chrome window, try again, or open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
The snip contains the wrong window The wrong window was selected Repeat window capture and select the Chrome window thumbnail.
The image stops at the fold Snipping Tool captures the screen, not the document Use the DevTools full-size screenshot command.
“Capture full size screenshot” is missing DevTools lacks focus, or Chrome changed the command list Click inside DevTools, press Ctrl+Shift+P, search for “screenshot,” and update Chrome if needed.
Images are missing Assets are still loading or require scrolling Wait for the page to settle, scroll through it once, then capture again.
The page shows a consent or chat overlay The site displays an interactive widget Dismiss it before a manual capture, or use ScreenshotNeo, which removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture.
The API returns an error or empty result Invalid key, inaccessible URL, timeout, or bot check Check the key and URL, allow up to the documented timeout, inspect X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed, and retry only when appropriate.

Performance, reliability, and cost notes

  • Visible Snipping Tool captures are immediate because they copy pixels already rendered on your screen.
  • Full-page DevTools captures take longer on tall pages and depend on Chrome finishing layout and resource loading.
  • For repeatable automation, set an explicit viewport, device, wait condition, and output format.
  • Cache stable pages when appropriate; ScreenshotNeo lets you choose a cache TTL.
  • Use asynchronous jobs and signed webhooks for batches or slow pages, and bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call.
  • ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed.

FAQ

Can I capture only the part of Chrome I can see?

Yes. Windows logo key + Shift + S opens Snipping Tool, where rectangular, window, freeform, and full-screen modes are available.

Does Snipping Tool capture content below the page?

No. It captures the screen. Use Chrome DevTools full-size screenshot for the complete document.

What format does Chrome DevTools use?

The community-described command normally downloads a PNG. Use an API when you need controlled PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output.

Can I automate screenshots from Windows?

Yes. A screenshot API such as ScreenshotNeo can be called from cURL, Python, Node.js, or an MCP client without keeping a Chrome window open.

Why is my full-page screenshot different each time?

Dynamic content, animations, lazy loading, ads, and rotating widgets can change during capture. Use consistent waits, block unnecessary requests, or capture through an API with explicit settings.
