How to Change the Default Screenshot App in Windows 10
Make Print Screen open Windows 10 Snipping Tool, choose the right capture shortcut, and troubleshoot common screenshot problems.
Short answer: Windows 10 does not provide one universal “default screenshot app” picker. The setting that matches this request changes what the Print Screen (PrtScn) key opens. Go to Start > Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard, then turn on the toggle under Print Screen shortcut. Microsoft may label it Use the Print screen key to open screen capture.
After you enable it, pressing PrtScn opens the screen-snipping overlay. Windows’ separate Default apps page assigns applications to file types, links and protocols; it does not select a system-wide screenshot program.
1. Make Print Screen open Snipping Tool
- Open the Start menu and select Settings.
- Choose Ease of Access.
- In the left sidebar, select Keyboard.
- Scroll to Print Screen shortcut.
- Turn on the switch that lets the Print Screen key open screen capture. The wording can vary slightly between Windows updates.
- Press PrtScn to confirm that the snipping overlay appears.
Microsoft documents this behavior in its accessibility keyboard shortcuts guidance. If your keyboard has no dedicated Print Screen key, look for a key labeled PrtSc, PrtScn or Print Scr, or hold Fn while pressing the key shown in your device documentation.
2. Pick the shortcut that matches the capture you need
| Goal | Shortcut or tool | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Select a rectangle, window or freeform area | Windows + Shift + S | Opens the Snipping Tool overlay. The result is copied to the clipboard and can be opened for markup or saved. |
| Use the Print Screen key for snipping | PrtScn after enabling the setting | Opens screen capture instead of only copying the full screen. |
| Save a full-screen image immediately | Windows + PrtScn | Saves a full-screen capture in Pictures\Screenshots when supported by the device. |
| Capture with editing and sharing controls | Open Snipping Tool from Start | Choose rectangular, window, full-screen or freeform capture, then edit, save or share. |
The exact key combination can depend on keyboard hardware. Microsoft lists the shortcut behavior in its Windows keyboard shortcuts reference.
3. Change where screenshots are saved
For automatic full-screen saves, open File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. Snipping Tool also has settings for automatic saving and the Screenshots folder. Open Snipping Tool, select its … menu, choose Settings, and review the saving options available in your Windows build.
If you use Windows + Shift + S, the initial capture is placed on the clipboard. Select the notification that appears after capture to open Snipping Tool, where you can annotate and save the file to a location of your choice.
4. If you meant a third-party screenshot program
Windows’ documented setting controls the Print Screen shortcut. A third-party application may also offer its own hotkey, startup option or shell integration. To avoid conflicts:
- Check the third-party app’s hotkey settings and disable its Print Screen binding if you want Windows Snipping Tool to receive the key.
- Check Settings > Apps > Startup if the app must run before its shortcut works.
- Use Windows + Shift + S when you need a Windows-controlled region capture regardless of another app’s hotkeys.
- Do not change file associations expecting them to change what PrtScn does; file associations only affect opening saved image files.
5. Troubleshooting
PrtScn still copies the screen instead of opening snipping
Return to Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard and verify the Print Screen toggle is on. Sign out and back in if the change does not take effect immediately. A keyboard utility or screenshot program may be intercepting the key; temporarily disable that utility or remove its Print Screen binding.
The Print Screen key does nothing
Try Fn + PrtScn on a laptop, test Windows + Shift + S, and check whether the keyboard has a hardware switch or function-layer lock. If an external keyboard fails while the built-in keyboard works, reconnect it or test another USB port.
Windows + Shift + S opens no overlay
Search for Snipping Tool from Start and open it directly. If it is missing or fails to launch, install pending Windows updates and restart. A managed work computer may restrict or remove the app through administrator policy.
The screenshot is not in Pictures\Screenshots
Only shortcuts that save automatically create a file there. Clipboard captures must be pasted into an image editor or opened from the Snipping Tool notification and saved manually. Also check Snipping Tool’s saving settings for a customized folder.
The capture is black, blank or missing a window
Some protected video, elevated applications and hardware-accelerated surfaces restrict capture. Try capturing the window with Snipping Tool, switch to the application’s own export function, or capture a non-protected region.
6. Choosing the fastest workflow
- One selected region: use Windows + Shift + S.
- You regularly press PrtScn: enable the Print Screen shortcut toggle.
- A saved full-screen file: use Windows + PrtScn and check Pictures\Screenshots.
- Annotations or sharing: open the result in Snipping Tool.
These built-in workflows require no paid software and have no API or per-capture cost. For automated website captures from a script or CI job, a browser-based screenshot service is a different workflow.
7. Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a repeatable screenshot of a web page rather than a capture of your Windows desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one GET request. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

8. FAQ
Can I set Snipping Tool as the default app for screenshots?
You can make PrtScn open screen capture with the Print Screen shortcut toggle. Windows does not expose a separate global screenshot-app default picker.
What is the difference between PrtScn and Windows + Shift + S?
After the toggle is enabled, PrtScn opens the snipping interface. Windows + Shift + S opens that interface directly and is useful when you want to select a region immediately.
Where does Windows + PrtScn save the image?
Typically in Pictures\Screenshots. The available behavior depends on the keyboard and device, and Snipping Tool settings can affect saving.
Does changing this setting affect screenshots taken by other programs?
No. It changes the Windows Print Screen shortcut. Other applications can keep their own capture shortcuts and workflows.
