How to Change the Default Screenshot Tool in Windows 11

Windows 11 cannot choose a replacement screenshot app system-wide, but you can release Print Screen and assign it in a third-party tool.

Short answer: Windows 11 does not include a system-wide app picker for the Print Screen key. You can turn off the setting that makes Print Screen open Windows screen snipping, then assign that key inside a third-party screenshot app if the app supports it.

Open Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard. Turn off Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. Then open your preferred screenshot app and configure its own Print Screen shortcut. The exact menu depends on that app.

What “default screenshot tool” means in Windows 11

The phrase usually refers to one of two behaviors:

  • Windows behavior: whether pressing Print Screen launches screen snipping. Microsoft provides an on/off switch for this.
  • Third-party behavior: which installed app receives Print Screen. Windows does not provide a universal selector for this; the screenshot app must support binding the key.

Changing the Windows toggle disables its screen-snipping action. It does not select ShareX, Greenshot, or another program for you.

Step 1: Stop Print Screen from opening Windows snipping

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Accessibility.
  3. Choose Keyboard.
  4. Find Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.
  5. Switch it Off.

This is the documented Windows control for Print Screen behavior. Microsoft also documents Windows logo key + Shift + S as a direct shortcut for starting a snip, so you can keep that shortcut available even after releasing Print Screen.

Step 2: Assign Print Screen in your screenshot app

Open the third-party app’s preferences and look for a section named Hotkeys, Shortcuts, Capture, or Keyboard. Assign Print Screen to the capture action you want, such as a region, full screen, active window, or scrolling capture.

There is no universal menu path. If the app has no Print Screen option, Windows cannot force it to use that key. Check the app’s current documentation for its supported shortcuts.

Choosing the workflow that fits

Workflow Setup Best for Trade-off
Keep Windows snipping Leave the toggle on; use Print Screen or Windows + Shift + S Quick region captures and basic annotation Print Screen remains owned by Windows
Give Print Screen to another app Turn the toggle off, then bind the key in that app Custom capture modes, automatic saving, or workflows Depends on the app supporting the key and avoiding conflicts
Use a different shortcut Leave Windows unchanged and use the app’s alternate hotkey Systems where Print Screen is reserved by another utility Requires learning another shortcut

What Print Screen captures and where it saves

Microsoft’s Snipping Tool documentation describes Print Screen as a static capture of the entire screen copied to the clipboard. Snipping Tool also has settings for automatic saving and the Screenshots folder. If you need a file saved automatically, verify the behavior in the app you assign to Print Screen rather than assuming every tool uses the same folder or format.

Troubleshooting Print Screen conflicts

The toggle is missing or has a different name

Windows labels can vary by release and language. Search Settings for Print Screen or screen snipping, and install pending Windows updates if the Keyboard page is missing the control.

  • Confirm the toggle is off, then sign out or restart Windows.
  • Check whether a keyboard utility, cloud-storage client, or accessibility tool has its own screenshot assignment.
  • Test with the on-screen keyboard to rule out a faulty physical key.

Your third-party app does not react to Print Screen

Make sure its hotkey setting is enabled and that the app is running in the notification area. Some applications cannot register a global Print Screen shortcut. Try the app’s alternate capture key or run its shortcut configuration again after disabling Windows screen snipping.

The key worked until another app was installed

Hotkey ownership is often the cause. Greenshot’s troubleshooting guidance specifically mentions Windows screen snipping and cloud-storage screenshot settings, including OneDrive and Dropbox, as possible conflicts. Disable the competing screenshot shortcut or assign your preferred app a different key.

That is normal for clipboard-based capture. Paste into Paint, an editor, or another destination, or enable automatic saving in the capture app’s settings.

Reliability and workflow tips

  • Choose one application to own the global capture key.
  • Keep Windows + Shift + S as a fallback for quick region captures.
  • Configure the save folder and image format explicitly if captures feed a build, documentation, or ticketing workflow.
  • After changing hotkeys, test full screen, region, active-window, clipboard, and automatic-save behavior separately.
  • For managed PCs, verify whether organization policies or endpoint utilities reserve screenshot shortcuts.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is automated screenshots of web pages rather than a local desktop hotkey, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests

r = requests.get(

    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. One thousand screenshots per month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

FAQ

Can I set ShareX or Greenshot as the Windows default app?

Windows has no built-in system-wide selector for the Print Screen recipient. Disable Windows screen snipping and configure the third-party app’s own global hotkey if it supports one.

Does turning off the toggle disable all screenshots?

No. Windows + Shift + S remains available, and you can use other shortcuts or screenshot applications.

Why does Print Screen behave differently on my keyboard?

Some keyboards require a function layer such as Fn + Print Screen. Keyboard firmware and manufacturer utilities can also assign or intercept the key.

Can an application launch Snipping Tool directly?

Microsoft documents URI integration for apps that need to invoke capture actions. That integration does not establish a different Print Screen default.

Summary checklist

  • Open Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard.
  • Turn off Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.
  • Assign Print Screen in the third-party screenshot app, if supported.
  • Resolve conflicts with cloud, keyboard, or other capture utilities.
  • Keep Windows + Shift + S as a fallback.
