How to Change Screenshot Size in Windows 10

Change screenshot size in Windows 10 by selecting a smaller area, resizing pixels in Paint, or reducing file size without distortion.

Use Windows+Shift+S to select a smaller area before you capture. If you already saved the screenshot and need exact pixel dimensions, open it in Paint, choose Resize, select Pixels, enter the target width or height, keep the aspect ratio locked, and save a copy.

“Screenshot size” can mean three different things:

  • Capture area: how much of the screen appears in the image.
  • Pixel dimensions: the image width and height, such as 1,920 × 1,080.
  • File size: how many kilobytes or megabytes the saved PNG, JPEG, or WebP uses.

Choose the method that matches the result you need.

1. Capture a smaller area with Snipping Tool

  1. Press Windows+Shift+S.
  2. Choose Rectangle in the Snipping Tool overlay.
  3. Drag around the exact content you want to keep.
  4. Release the mouse. The snip is copied to Snipping Tool, where you can edit, save, or share it.

This changes the subject area before the image is created, so it is the best choice when you do not need the rest of the desktop. Snipping Tool also provides Window, Full screen, and Freeform modes. Use Window for one application, Full screen for the entire display, and Freeform for an irregular shape.

2. Resize an existing screenshot in Paint

  1. Save the screenshot.
  2. In File Explorer, right-click it and choose Open with > Paint.
  3. Select Resize.
  4. Choose Percentage for proportional scaling or Pixels for an exact target.
  5. Keep Maintain aspect ratio (or the lock control) enabled unless you deliberately want to stretch the image.
  6. Enter the new width or height, then choose OK.
  7. Use Save as to preserve the original file.

For example, setting both dimensions to 50% produces half the width and half the height, which is one quarter of the original pixel area. The current Microsoft Support workflow also exposes Paint through Edit > Edit with Paint.

3. Use shortcuts when you need a full-screen image

Shortcut Result Where it goes
Print Screen (PrtSc) Copies a full-screen image Clipboard
Windows+PrtScn Captures the full screen and saves it Pictures\Screenshots
Windows+Shift+S Opens selectable capture modes Snipping Tool and clipboard

A full-screen capture follows your display’s pixel resolution. A 4K monitor therefore creates a much larger image than a 1080p monitor. Select a region or resize afterward when you need a smaller result.

4. Change pixel dimensions without distortion

Use Pixels in Paint when a website, document, or upload form specifies an exact width. Enter one dimension while the aspect ratio is locked; Paint calculates the other dimension. If you enter both dimensions with the lock disabled, circles and people can appear stretched.

Common examples:

  • Make a 1,920 × 1,080 screenshot 960 pixels wide by entering 960 for width. The height becomes 540.
  • Make a screenshot half-size by choosing Percentage and entering 50.
  • Keep the full screen but reduce the output by resizing the saved file after capture.

5. Reduce the file size in KB or MB

Pixel dimensions and file size are related but different. Reducing width and height usually reduces bytes, but the result also depends on image detail and format.

  • PNG: preserves sharp edges and transparency, but screenshots with photographs or gradients can be large.
  • JPEG: usually creates a smaller file for photographic content, with some quality loss.
  • WebP: can reduce bytes while retaining good visual quality when the destination accepts it.

Paint’s Save as menu lets you choose an available format. Do not repeatedly resave a JPEG if clarity matters; each lossy save can introduce additional artifacts. If an upload has a byte limit, resize in pixels first, then save in a format supported by the destination and check the resulting file properties.

6. PowerShell option for repeatable resizing

For a one-off change, Paint is simpler. For repeatable work, this PowerShell example uses the Windows imaging libraries to scale an image to a target width while preserving its aspect ratio.

$inputPath = "C:\Users\YourName\Pictures\shot.png"
$outputPath = "C:\Users\YourName\Pictures\shot-resized.jpg"
$targetWidth = 1200

Add-Type -AssemblyName System.Drawing
$image = [System.Drawing.Image]::FromFile($inputPath)
$targetHeight = [int]($image.Height * $targetWidth / $image.Width)
$bitmap = New-Object System.Drawing.Bitmap $targetWidth, $targetHeight
$graphics = [System.Drawing.Graphics]::FromImage($bitmap)
$graphics.InterpolationMode = [System.Drawing.Drawing2D.InterpolationMode]::HighQualityBicubic
$graphics.DrawImage($image, 0, 0, $targetWidth, $targetHeight)
$bitmap.Save($outputPath, [System.Drawing.Imaging.ImageFormat]::Jpeg)
$graphics.Dispose()
$bitmap.Dispose()
$image.Dispose()

Change the two paths and $targetWidth. The source remains unchanged and the output is written as JPEG.

7. Capture web pages at a controlled size

Windows shortcuts capture what is visible on your display. They do not provide a reliable way to set a browser viewport, load lazy images below the fold, remove consent overlays, or automate many URLs. For those jobs, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its API supports any viewport, 12 device presets, retina scale, full-page capture with lazy images loaded, element capture by CSS selector, dark mode, image resizing, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture, and a usage API. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the current request options.

8. Or skip the browser setup

Use one GET request when you need a consistent web-page image rather than a desktop capture.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. An MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

9. Troubleshooting

Problem Cause Fix
The screenshot is huge Full-screen capture used a high-resolution display Select a smaller region or resize in Paint using Pixels.
Text looks blurry The image was reduced too far or repeatedly saved with JPEG compression Start from the original, use a larger target width, and prefer PNG for text-heavy images.
The image is stretched Width and height were changed independently Lock the aspect ratio and change one dimension.
Only part of a window was captured The Rectangle mode ended at the wrong boundary Repeat Windows+Shift+S and use Window mode or drag a larger rectangle.
The saved file is too large Large dimensions or a detailed PNG Resize first, then try JPEG or WebP if the destination supports it.
Print Screen appears to do nothing The result went to the clipboard Paste into Paint, or use Windows+PrtScn to save automatically.
ScreenshotNeo returns an unexpected result The page may have a bot check, timeout, blank load, or overlay Inspect X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed, then adjust waits, selectors, headers, cookies, or blocking options in the documentation.

10. Performance, reliability, and cost considerations

  • Fastest manual workflow: select the needed region before capture; there is no post-processing step.
  • Best repeatability: resize from the same original and record the target pixel width.
  • Quality: preserve the aspect ratio and avoid repeated lossy saves.
  • Web-page automation: choose a viewport and wait condition that matches the page; full-page captures may take longer because lazy images must load.
  • Cost control: ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots. Failed loads, bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, and cache hits are free, and caching with a chosen TTL can avoid repeated work.

11. FAQ

Can I change screenshot size before taking it?

Yes. Press Windows+Shift+S and select only the area you need. This changes the capture region, not the monitor resolution.

How do I make a screenshot exactly 800 pixels wide?

Open the saved image in Paint, choose Resize, select Pixels, enter 800 for width, and keep the aspect ratio locked.

Does changing display scaling resize screenshots?

Scaling changes how text and apps appear on the desktop. It is not a precise screenshot-output control; region selection or Paint resizing is more predictable.

Where does Windows+PrtScn save screenshots?

Windows identifies Pictures\Screenshots as the default location.

Yes. ScreenshotNeo accepts the consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture.
