To screenshot a webpage with Claude on Windows, connect Claude Desktop to Microsoft’s Playwright MCP server, ask Claude to open the page, then use the server’s screenshot tool. Set fullPage to true for the full scrollable page; omit it for a screenshot of the current browser view.

This guide uses a local MCP server so the browser can run on your Windows computer. Anthropic treats local servers and remote MCP connectors as separate connection paths: a remote connector does not automatically control a browser installed on your PC. Official sources reviewed do not establish India-specific account or network eligibility, so check Claude’s current availability and your own network access directly.

1. Install Claude Desktop on Windows

Download Claude Desktop from Claude’s official downloads page, install it, and sign in. Claude Code is another supported MCP client, but this walkthrough uses Claude Desktop.

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open protocol for connecting an AI application to tools and data sources. In this workflow, Claude sends browser actions to Playwright MCP, and the MCP server operates a browser on the local machine.

2. Check the prerequisites

  • A supported Windows installation with Claude Desktop installed.
  • Node.js and npm available in a terminal, so npx can run the Playwright MCP package.
  • A browser supported by Playwright MCP. Microsoft documents Chromium-based browsers, Firefox, and WebKit; this guide selects Microsoft Edge.
  • Internet access to install and run the MCP package and load the target website.

Check Node and npm in PowerShell:

node --version
npm --version
npx --version

If a command is not recognized, install or repair Node.js, then close and reopen the terminal so it reloads the PATH. The reviewed sources do not specify a minimum Node.js version; use a current supported Node.js release.

3. Connect Playwright MCP to Claude Desktop

Microsoft’s Playwright MCP project documents setup for Claude Desktop. Follow its current README and Claude Desktop install instructions. The standard server command is npx @playwright/mcp@latest; for Edge, add --browser msedge.

When Claude Desktop asks for the server configuration, use this command and argument list in the configuration format specified by the install guide:

npx
@playwright/mcp@latest
--browser
msedge

The exact configuration-file location and wrapper format can change with Claude Desktop and its installation method. Use the official install guide rather than guessing a file path. If you use a JSON configuration that represents commands as an executable plus arguments, the equivalent values are:

{
  "command": "npx",
  "args": ["@playwright/mcp@latest", "--browser", "msedge"]
}

Restart Claude Desktop after saving the configuration. Claude Code users can add the same server from a terminal with:

claude mcp add playwright npx @playwright/mcp@latest

To select Edge in that client, configure the documented --browser msedge argument using Claude Code’s MCP command options. Microsoft’s README is the source of truth for current client-specific configuration syntax.

4. Confirm the MCP connection and available tools

In Claude Desktop, inspect the plus menu’s Connectors view for connected MCP servers and their tools. Claude’s Developer settings also show connection status and logs. The Playwright server should expose browser navigation and screenshot capabilities.

If the server appears offline, check that the executable can be found, the configuration is valid, and the terminal can run npx. Read the MCP logs for the specific startup error before changing configuration.

5. Ask Claude to capture a webpage

Start with a clear instruction that identifies the URL, browser, capture scope, and output location. For example:

Open https://example.com in the browser controlled by Playwright MCP.
Take a screenshot of the full scrollable page with fullPage set to true.
Save it as example-full-page.png in the configured screenshot output directory.
Tell me the saved file path.

Claude chooses and calls the available Playwright MCP tools. The screenshot tool accepts an output filename and image type. Confirm that the resulting image exists in the expected output directory; the server can also use an output directory for automatically named screenshots.

Viewport screenshot versus full-page screenshot

Capture Setting What it contains
Current viewport Omit fullPage or set it to false The visible browser page area at the current scroll position.
Full page Set fullPage: true The page’s full scrollable content as one screenshot.

Use a viewport image when you need to document a visible state or compare a fixed-size layout. Use full-page capture for a long article or page review. Very long pages can produce large image files and may take longer to render and save.

6. Choose a browser or MCP route

Playwright MCP documents browser choices including Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and WebKit. To use Edge, select --browser msedge; for another supported browser, follow the project’s current option names and ensure that browser is installed.

Microsoft also documents Edge DevTools MCP as a separate Edge-focused option. Its published prerequisites include Node.js, npm, Microsoft Edge, and an MCP-capable agent such as Claude Code. Choose it when you specifically need the Edge DevTools workflow; use Playwright MCP for its broader documented browser selection and screenshot interface.

7. Local MCP versus a remote connector

A local Playwright MCP server is the relevant setup when the goal is to operate a browser on the Windows computer. A remote MCP connector is reached from Anthropic’s cloud infrastructure and follows a different connection path. Do not assume that adding a remote connector gives Claude access to a browser installed on the local PC.

Only connect to MCP servers you trust. Review tool requests and enable the tools you need, especially when a server can browse arbitrary sites or interact with page content.

8. Troubleshooting

Problem Likely cause What to do
Claude does not show the Playwright tools The server did not start, the config is malformed, or Claude Desktop has not reloaded it. Check Developer settings and MCP logs, validate the command and arguments against Microsoft’s install guide, then restart Claude Desktop.
npx is not recognized Node.js/npm is missing or the terminal has an old PATH. Install or repair Node.js, reopen the terminal, and check node --version and npx --version.
The browser fails to launch The selected browser is unavailable or its name/argument is incorrect. Confirm Edge is installed and use --browser msedge. For other browser names, copy the current documented value from the Playwright MCP README.
The capture shows only the top or visible portion The request captured the viewport rather than the entire scrollable page. Ask Claude to set fullPage to true in the screenshot tool call.
The screenshot is blank or incomplete The page may still be loading, require interaction, or have blocked content. Ask Claude to wait for the page to finish loading before capture, and check whether the page requires sign-in, consent, or user interaction.
The output file is hard to find The server saved it in its configured output directory or used an automatic filename. Ask Claude to return the exact path and verify the configured output directory.
Claude cannot connect in a restricted network Package installation, the MCP process, or the target site may be blocked by network policy. Check the relevant network and proxy settings with your administrator; the official documentation reviewed does not establish India-specific restrictions or eligibility.

9. Performance, reliability, and cost

Capture time depends on the target site, page length, browser startup, network, and whether page content loads dynamically. Full-page screenshots of long pages naturally require more rendering and produce larger files than viewport captures. If repeatability matters, use the same browser, viewport, and page state for each capture and ask Claude to wait for the needed content.

This local workflow involves Claude client access, your computer, the MCP process, browser, and target site; a failure in any of those can prevent a capture. The research sources do not provide a performance benchmark or a single price for this workflow. Check Claude’s current plan and usage terms for your account and region; no India-specific availability claim is made here.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request, while its MCP server provides screenshot tools for Claude and other MCP clients. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.

Here is a cURL example that saves a WebP screenshot:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options.

Equivalent Python:

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Equivalent Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer())));

ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server so AI agents can take screenshots, and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free and get 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently asked questions
