How to Configure a Website Screenshot MCP Server in Claude Desktop

Connect Claude Desktop to Microsoft Playwright MCP, capture full-page screenshots, and troubleshoot common setup problems.

To take website screenshots from Claude Desktop, connect a local MCP server that provides browser tools. Microsoft Playwright MCP is one supported option: install Node.js 20 or newer, add its server entry to Claude Desktop’s MCP configuration, restart Claude Desktop, then ask it to navigate to a page and use browser_take_screenshot. The first browser download happens on first use. See the Playwright MCP README and the installation guide.

1. Choose how to install the server

Claude Desktop supports local MCP server configuration. Claude also offers desktop extensions through Settings > Extensions, which provide a guided installation route. For this browser screenshot setup, the concrete server configuration below uses Microsoft Playwright MCP. Choose an extension when one matches your needs and you prefer guided setup; use a local server entry when you want to configure this server directly. See Anthropic’s local MCP server instructions.

2. Install the prerequisites

  1. Install Node.js 20 or newer, as required by the current Playwright MCP installation guide.
  2. Use the Claude Desktop configuration flow documented by Anthropic to locate or edit the local MCP configuration file for your system.
  3. Keep a copy of any existing configuration entries. You will add the Playwright entry alongside them, rather than replacing them.

Playwright MCP downloads its browser automatically on first use. Allow time and disk space for that initial setup before relying on a first capture.

3. Add the Playwright MCP server

Add the following configuration under the top-level mcpServers key. If your file already has that key, insert the playwright object beside its other server entries and preserve them.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "playwright": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["@playwright/mcp@latest"]
    }
  }
}

This is the configuration shape documented in the Microsoft Playwright MCP README. The npx command runs the package without requiring a global installation. The @latest tag resolves the current published package when invoked, so the version may change over time.

4. Restart Claude Desktop and verify the connection

  1. Save the configuration file.
  2. Restart Claude Desktop or reconnect the server if it does not appear immediately.
  3. Open the chat’s Connectors menu or Claude Desktop’s Developer settings and check that the server and its tools are listed.
  4. If it is missing, inspect the server logs and check that the configuration values are valid and the relevant paths are accessible.

These are the first checks recommended by Claude’s troubleshooting guidance.

5. Ask Claude to capture a screenshot

Ask Claude to navigate to the target page and then call the screenshot tool. For example:

Navigate to https://example.com, then take a full-page screenshot and save it as homepage.png.

The Playwright MCP screenshot tool is named browser_take_screenshot. It supports a full-page capture with fullPage: true and a filename. If no filename is supplied, it may return the image inline. See the Playwright screenshot tool documentation.

A screenshot is useful for visual review. To locate and operate page elements, Playwright MCP also supports browser interactions based on structured accessibility snapshots; you do not have to identify controls by visually guessing their positions. The README describes this interaction model.

6. Decide whether local browser capture fits

A local browser MCP server is useful when Claude needs to navigate pages and interact with a browser as part of a task. Before adopting it, consider:

  • Setup and first-run readiness: Node.js 20 or newer is required, and the browser downloads on first use.
  • Capture scope: the documented screenshot tool can return an image inline or save it to a filename, and can capture a full page.
  • Interaction: use the accessibility snapshot and browser tools to find and operate elements, rather than treating the screenshot as the only source of page structure.
  • Configuration maintenance: preserve existing MCP server entries when editing the configuration, and check logs when a server fails to start.

The setup sources do not establish benchmark figures for capture speed or resource use. Browser startup and the first browser download are additional work compared with later requests, so allow for them in an initial setup or a time-sensitive workflow.

7. Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to do
Playwright does not appear in Claude Desktop The configuration was not saved, Claude has not reloaded it, or the server did not start. Restart or reconnect Claude Desktop, check Connectors or Developer settings, and inspect the server logs.
Claude reports a configuration error The JSON is malformed, the entry is under the wrong key, or an existing entry was overwritten or incorrectly combined. Validate the JSON structure, place the entry under mcpServers, and preserve sibling server entries.
The server command cannot run Node.js is missing or is older than the documented minimum, or npx is not available in the environment Claude uses. Install Node.js 20 or newer and confirm the command can be found from the configured environment.
First launch is slow or does not complete The browser is being downloaded on first use or setup is failing before it finishes. Allow the initial browser download to complete, then inspect the server logs if startup still fails.
The screenshot is not full-page The request did not specify full-page capture. Ask for a full-page screenshot; the tool supports the fullPage: true option.
No image appears in the response A filename may have been supplied, so the tool saves the capture instead of returning it inline. Check the named output file, or omit the filename if you want the image returned inline.
Claude cannot find a control to click A screenshot alone does not describe the page’s interactive structure. Ask Claude to inspect the accessibility snapshot and use the browser page tools to locate the element.
Server cannot access a configured path The extension or server configuration may not have the required path permissions. Review the configured paths and permissions using Claude’s local server troubleshooting guidance.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to get a screenshot from a URL without configuring a local browser server, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its MCP tools include take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf, for Claude and other MCP clients. Its screenshot API accepts one GET request and returns an image or PDF. The API options and MCP setup are documented at ScreenshotNeo docs.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; you can turn each step off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers say the page verdict and whether the request was billed. AI agents can use its MCP server. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

FAQ

Does Claude Desktop support MCP servers?

Yes. Claude Desktop supports local MCP servers, and desktop extensions are another installation route. See Anthropic’s setup guide.

Does the Playwright server need a separate browser installation?

The Playwright MCP installation guide says the browser downloads automatically on first use.

Can I capture a screenshot without saving it to a file?

Yes. The screenshot tool may return the image inline when you omit the filename.

Can I use a screenshot to interact with a page?

Use the browser tools and accessibility snapshot to inspect and operate page elements. The screenshot itself is a visual result, not the page’s structured interaction map.
