Default Screenshot Tool in Windows 11
Snipping Tool is Windows 11’s built-in screenshot app. Learn every shortcut for images, video, full-screen captures, saving and troubleshooting.
Snipping Tool is the default screenshot utility in Windows 11. Press Windows+Shift+S to select an area, Windows+PrtSc to save the entire screen to Pictures\Screenshots, or Windows+Shift+R to record a selected video region. Microsoft documents these workflows in its Snipping Tool guide and Windows keyboard shortcut reference.
Which Windows 11 screenshot method should you use?
| Goal | Shortcut or action | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Select part of the screen | Windows+Shift+S | Snipping overlay; capture is copied into the Snipping Tool workflow and clipboard. |
| Save the entire screen immediately | Windows+PrtSc | Image is saved in Pictures\Screenshots. |
| Capture a window | Windows+Shift+S, then Window mode | Captures one application window. |
| Record part of the screen | Windows+Shift+R | Opens Snipping Tool’s video recording workflow. |
| Annotate or crop | Open the capture in Snipping Tool | Use pen, highlighter, shapes, crop and save/share controls. |
Take a selected screenshot with Windows+Shift+S
- Press Windows+Shift+S. The screen dims and the snipping toolbar appears.
- Choose Rectangular, Freeform, Window or Full-screen mode.
- Select the area or window. The capture is placed in the Snipping Tool workflow and copied to the clipboard.
- Click the notification to edit, annotate, crop, save or share it. You can also paste the capture directly into an email, document or image editor with Ctrl+V.
Choosing a snip shape
- Rectangular: drag a precise box around a region.
- Freeform: draw an irregular outline.
- Window: select a detected application window.
- Full-screen: capture all displays visible to Windows.
Save a full-screen screenshot directly
Press Windows+PrtSc. Windows saves the image under Pictures\Screenshots. Open File Explorer and enter %USERPROFILE%\Pictures\Screenshots in the address bar to find it quickly.
On some laptops, the Print Screen key is combined with another function key. Try the device’s Fn modifier if the shortcut does nothing. Microsoft also documents Fn+Windows+Space for devices without a dedicated PrtSc key. See the Microsoft Print Screen shortcut guidance for keyboard-specific behavior.
Change what the Print Screen key does
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accessibility > Keyboard.
- Find Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.
- Turn the setting on if PrtSc should open the snipping overlay, or turn it off if you want a traditional full-screen Print Screen capture.
Print Screen behavior can therefore differ between Windows installations and keyboard layouts. Do not assume that pressing PrtSc always saves a file.
Record a video region
- Press Windows+Shift+R, or open Snipping Tool, choose Record, then New.
- Drag over the region to record.
- Start the recording, reproduce the action, then stop it.
- Review the recording and save or share it from Snipping Tool.
Use this for a short bug reproduction or walkthrough. For longer recordings, a dedicated screen-recording workflow may be more suitable.
Edit, extract and redact information
Snipping Tool can annotate with a pen or highlighter, add shapes, crop, save and share captures. Its Text actions can copy recognized text and redact detected email addresses or phone numbers. Microsoft says Text actions processing is performed locally on the device. Recognition quality depends on image clarity, scale and the typeface in the captured content.
Copilot+ PC-only features
Microsoft lists Perfect Screenshot and Color picker as available only on Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs. Perfect Screenshot helps frame on-screen content to reduce manual cropping; Color picker copies a selected on-screen color value. These features are not available on every Windows 11 computer.
Where screenshots are saved
- Windows+PrtSc: normally saves to
Pictures\Screenshots. - Windows+Shift+S: places the capture in the Snipping Tool workflow and clipboard until you save it.
- Auto-save: Snipping Tool settings control whether captures are automatically saved and where.
If OneDrive or an organization’s policy redirects your Pictures folder, the effective location can differ. Check the folder shown in File Explorer and Snipping Tool settings.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Windows+Shift+S does nothing | Snipping Tool is missing, disabled or stuck. | Open Snipping Tool from Start, install updates through Microsoft Store, then retry. Restart Windows if the overlay remains unavailable. |
| PrtSc opens the overlay instead of saving | The Accessibility keyboard setting is enabled. | Change Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping under Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard. |
| No file appears after a snip | Windows+Shift+S copies the image but does not necessarily save it. | Click the notification, choose Save, or paste the clipboard image into an editor and save it. |
| Windows+PrtSc saves nothing | Keyboard requires Fn, or the Pictures folder is redirected. | Try Fn with PrtSc, verify the shortcut, and inspect the current Pictures\Screenshots location. |
| Window mode selects the wrong window | Overlapping windows or a transient menu changed focus. | Bring the target window to the front, wait for it to finish rendering, and repeat the capture. |
| Text actions misread content | Low resolution, unusual fonts or motion blur. | Capture at native scale, enlarge the target before snipping, and verify recognized text manually. |
| Recording is unavailable | The Snipping Tool version or device policy may not include recording. | Update Snipping Tool and check whether organization policy restricts capture features. |
Reliability, privacy and workflow notes
- For evidence that must be reproducible, save the original capture immediately and record the window, monitor and time.
- Check notifications and sensitive data before sharing. Snipping Tool’s redaction tools can help, but inspect the final image yourself.
- On managed devices, administrators can restrict screenshots, clipboard access or Store updates. Local policy can override the default workflow.
- Full-screen images are faster for a one-off record; selected or window snips reduce later cropping and file size.
For automated website screenshots
Snipping Tool captures what is visible on your Windows desktop. It does not provide a repeatable server-side capture for URLs, responsive viewports, scheduled jobs or API integrations. For that workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
It supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-element captures, dark mode, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocked resources, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture and a usage API. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots, and every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
