Does Lightshot Upload Every Screenshot? Privacy and Upload Behavior Explained
Lightshot does not upload every capture automatically, but uploaded images are public by URL. Learn the shortcuts, privacy risks, recovery steps, and safer workflows.
Short answer: No. Lightshot documents taking a capture, copying it to the clipboard, saving it as a file, editing it online, and uploading it as separate actions. On Windows, Ctrl+D uploads and Ctrl+S saves; on Mac, Command+D uploads and Command+S saves. [Lightshot hotkeys documentation](https://app.prntscr.com/en/hotkeys.html)
There is an important privacy distinction: when an image is uploaded to Lightshot’s website, Lightshot’s privacy policy says the image is public to anyone who has its exact URL. The policy describes the service as a sharing platform rather than secure image storage. [Lightshot privacy policy](https://prntscr.com/privacy-policy)
What happens when you take a Lightshot screenshot?
The desktop workflow begins with a local screen capture. After selecting an area, you choose what to do with the image:
| Action | Windows | Mac | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capture | Print Screen | Use the capture shortcut shown by your installed app | Starts a selection and creates the screenshot. |
| Copy | Ctrl+C | Command+C | Copies the selected image to the clipboard. |
| Save | Ctrl+S | Command+S | Saves the image locally. Lightshot says it uses the most recent folder, or Documents when no previous folder exists. |
| Upload | Ctrl+D | Command+D | Uploads the image, shows upload progress, and returns a link. |
| Edit online | Ctrl+E | Command+E | Uploads the selected area to Lightshot’s online editor. |
Lightshot also documents a shortcut behavior where holding Ctrl while starting a selection copies the image after the mouse button is released. Browser extensions can have different controls from the desktop application, so confirm the shortcuts in the version you installed.
Does Lightshot upload screenshots automatically?
Lightshot’s official hotkeys documentation lists upload as an explicit command. It distinguishes upload from capture, save, and copy operations. That documentation does not say that every screenshot is uploaded automatically.
In practical terms:
- Press the capture shortcut and select an area.
- Use copy or save if you want to keep the image local.
- Use upload only when you want Lightshot to host the image and provide a shareable link.
Online editing is also an upload action. If the screenshot contains confidential data, avoid both online editing and uploading.
What privacy does an uploaded Lightshot image have?
According to Lightshot’s privacy policy, every image uploaded to its website is public, including images uploaded without an account and images uploaded through an account gallery. Each image has its own URL, and anyone who enters that exact URL can view it.
The policy also says the website is intended for sharing images, not secure storage. An account gallery aggregates images posted through the account; it does not turn those images into private files.
What “public by URL” means
- The image is hosted by Lightshot after upload.
- A person who obtains the exact image URL can view it.
- Uploading does not require an account, according to the privacy policy.
- Screenshot history requires a prntscr.com account, according to the FAQ. That is separate from the ability to upload without an account.
- The reviewed policy and FAQ do not specify a retention period or confirm what happens after an anonymous upload is deleted.
Do not treat an unguessable-looking link as access control. The policy’s stated rule is that anyone who enters the exact URL can view the image.
How to keep a screenshot local
For private content, use a local or clipboard workflow:
- Capture the area with Lightshot.
- Press
Ctrl+Con Windows orCommand+Con Mac to paste it into a local editor or document. - Alternatively, press
Ctrl+SorCommand+Sand choose a local folder. - Do not press the upload shortcut.
- Do not use the online editor, because that action also sends the selected image to Lightshot’s service.
Before sharing a local file, inspect it for passwords, API keys, personal information, private URLs, customer data, browser tabs, and notifications. Redaction should happen in a local editor before any upload.
What to do if you uploaded private information
Lightshot’s FAQ says you can request removal by contacting support@skillbrains.com or by using the abuse button beneath the image. The FAQ does not provide a removal timeline or guarantee the outcome.
- Open the uploaded image URL and copy it exactly.
- Use the abuse button below the image, if available.
- Send a removal request to
support@skillbrains.comwith the URL and a concise explanation. - If the screenshot contains credentials, revoke or rotate them immediately. Removing the image does not undo a disclosure that someone may already have viewed or copied.
- Check documentation and account history for other copies or related uploads.
Do not assume that deleting a local copy removes the hosted image. Local deletion and service-side removal are separate actions.
Lightshot workflow choices compared
| Workflow | Where the image goes | Privacy implication | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copy to clipboard | Your operating system clipboard | Remains local until another application sends it somewhere | Temporary pasting into a local document or editor |
| Save to file | Your selected local folder | You control the file and its sharing | Archiving, redaction, or private records |
| Upload | Lightshot’s hosted website | Policy says anyone with the exact URL can view it | Quick public sharing |
| Online edit | Lightshot’s online service | The edit action uploads the selected image | Images that contain no sensitive data |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need screenshots of web pages for documentation or automation, ScreenshotNeo provides a GET request that returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture pipeline removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the complete option list.

Troubleshooting
I pressed the capture shortcut and saw no upload link
That is expected if you only captured, copied, or saved the image. Use the upload shortcut explicitly when you want a hosted link. Also check whether you are using a browser extension instead of the desktop app, because their controls can differ.
I cannot find a screenshot in my gallery
The FAQ says screenshot history requires a prntscr.com account. Uploading itself does not require an account, so an anonymous upload may not appear in an account history.
I used online editing without realizing it uploaded the image
Lightshot documents online editing as an upload action. Treat the image as disclosed, request removal through the abuse button or support@skillbrains.com, and rotate any exposed credentials.
The uploaded image still appears after I requested removal
The reviewed FAQ provides a removal request route but no response or deletion timeline. Keep the image URL and your request details, then follow up with support if necessary.
The Mac shortcut shown online is unclear
The capture glyphs in the hotkeys page’s text rendering are ambiguous. Do not rely on a transcribed shortcut; verify the current shortcut in the installed Mac application. The save, copy, edit, and upload combinations are listed separately as Command+S, Command+C, Command+E, and Command+D.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Local capture: saving or copying avoids network upload time and keeps the image under your control until you share it.
- Hosted upload: requires a network connection and creates a public-by-URL copy under Lightshot’s policy.
- Recovery: a removal request is available, but the reviewed FAQ gives no timing commitment.
- Automation: for repeated web-page captures, an API avoids maintaining a browser and exposes machine-readable outcomes. ScreenshotNeo does not bill failed loads, bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, or cache hits, and lets you choose caching TTLs, waits, blocking rules, and output formats.
- Costs: Lightshot’s reviewed pages do not provide a retention period or a quantitative upload-cost schedule. ScreenshotNeo offers 1,000 free shots monthly without a card, with paid plans beginning at $5 for 3,000.
FAQ
Can Lightshot upload without me pressing upload?
The official hotkeys page documents upload as a separate action and does not say that every capture uploads automatically.
Are Lightshot uploads private if I have an account?
No. The privacy policy says uploaded images are public by exact URL whether uploaded anonymously or through an account.
Can I use Lightshot for confidential screenshots?
Use local saving or clipboard copying and avoid online editing. The policy says the hosted service is for sharing, not secure storage.
Does Lightshot say how long it keeps uploads?
The reviewed official pages do not state a retention period or confirm deletion outcomes for anonymous uploads.
What is the safest way to share a private web capture?
Redact it locally, then use a sharing system with access controls appropriate to the information. Do not assume a Lightshot URL is access-controlled.
