How to Capture a Website Screenshot on a Dual-Monitor Windows Setup
Capture a website on one monitor with Windows Snipping Tool, save it, and troubleshoot display setup issues. Learn when to use a screenshot API instead.
To capture a website on one monitor in a dual-monitor Windows setup, show the page on the monitor you want, press Windows+Shift+S, choose Rectangular snip and drag around the page, or choose Window and select its browser window. The snip opens in Snipping Tool so you can crop, annotate, and save it. For an automatically saved full-screen screenshot, press Windows+PrtScn; Windows saves it under Pictures\Screenshots. Microsoft documents these capture modes, but does not specify whether full-screen capture spans both monitors in every setup.
This guide focuses on Windows 11. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions also list Windows 10, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guide describes capturing all or part of the PC screen. The steps below use the built-in tools and do not require additional hardware.
Choose what to capture
| Capture method | Best for | Where it goes | Dual-monitor detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rectangular snip | A specific visible part of a website | Snipping Tool and clipboard | Drag a rectangle around the content on the intended monitor. |
| Window snip | A browser window | Snipping Tool and clipboard | Select the browser window you want. Keep the intended page visible in that window. |
| Freeform snip | An irregular area | Snipping Tool and clipboard | Trace the area to capture with the pointer. |
| Full-screen snip | A quick capture of the screen | Snipping Tool and clipboard | Microsoft documents the mode, but does not specify how it behaves across two monitors. |
| Windows+PrtScn | A fast full-screen screenshot saved directly to a file | Pictures\Screenshots |
Microsoft documents the save location, but not a guaranteed combined or per-monitor result. |
For a dependable image of one visible region, use a rectangular snip. If you need to capture an entire webpage—including content below the fold—these screen methods only capture what is visible on the display; use a browser-based full-page capture method or a website screenshot API instead.
Capture and save a website on one monitor
- Move the browser window to the monitor you want to use. Maximize it if you want more of the page in view.
- Navigate to the website and wait for the portion you need to finish rendering. Scroll to the right position and close anything you do not want included.
- Press Windows+Shift+S. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool capture options appear.
- Choose Rectangular snip to drag around the website area, or choose Window and select the browser window. Microsoft also lists Freeform and Full screen modes.
- Open the Snipping Tool notification or the capture in Snipping Tool. Crop or annotate if needed.
- Choose Save as, or press Ctrl+S, select a folder and file name, then save.
The keyboard shortcut copies the selected region to the clipboard and makes the capture available in Snipping Tool. If you only need to paste it into another application, you can paste from the clipboard instead of saving a separate file.
Save a full-screen screenshot automatically
- Press Windows+PrtScn. On some keyboards, you may need to hold Fn as well, depending on the keyboard’s key behavior.
- Open File Explorer and go to Pictures > Screenshots.
- Open the saved image and crop it if you only need one monitor or a section of the page.
This shortcut is useful when speed matters, but Microsoft’s documentation does not establish whether a dual-monitor setup produces a combined image, one image per display, or another result in every configuration. If the output matters, inspect the saved file and use a rectangular snip for a precisely selected area.
Check monitor arrangement and display mode
If the displays are arranged differently in Windows than they are on your desk, set them up before capturing:
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Select Identify to see a number on each display.
- Drag the display tiles so their positions match the physical arrangement, then apply the change if prompted.
- Use Windows+P to choose a projection mode: PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, or Second screen only.
In an extended desktop, each monitor is a separate part of the workspace. In Duplicate mode, both displays show the same content. These settings help Windows place the screens as intended; they do not establish a particular output for full-screen screenshot capture. See Microsoft’s multiple-monitor instructions for display setup. Microsoft lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 for Snipping Tool instructions, but Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025.
What a desktop screenshot can and cannot capture
- Visible content: A region or window capture records what is on screen at capture time. Scroll to the desired section first.
- Below-the-fold content: A normal screen capture does not automatically scroll the page. To capture the whole webpage, use a browser full-page capture feature or a screenshot API that supports full-page capture.
- Dynamic pages: Wait for images, charts, and other content to appear before capturing. A visual snip records the current display state.
- Overlays: Cookie dialogs, chat widgets, and popups visible on screen may appear in the image. Close or dismiss them if appropriate.
- Multiple displays: Selecting a rectangle gives you direct control over the area. Official instructions do not settle how full-screen capture handles every dual-monitor arrangement or display-scaling combination.
Or skip the browser setup
If the goal is a clean website image rather than a screenshot of your Windows desktop, ScreenshotNeo captures a URL through one API request. See the ScreenshotNeo API docs for the available options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer())));
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Windows+Shift+S does not open the capture overlay | The shortcut may be intercepted, or the Snipping Tool is unavailable or not responding. | Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu and begin a capture there. Check that the keyboard shortcut is being sent to Windows. |
| The screenshot is in the clipboard but there is no file | Windows+Shift+S copies a selected capture; it is not the documented automatic save shortcut. | Open the capture in Snipping Tool and use Save as or Ctrl+S. For a direct full-screen save, use Windows+PrtScn and check Pictures\Screenshots. |
| The capture contains the wrong area | The browser was on another monitor, the page was scrolled to the wrong position, or the selection was imprecise. | Arrange the browser and page first, then repeat with Rectangular snip or Window mode. |
| The screenshot includes a popup or consent dialog | The overlay was visible when the screen was captured. | Dismiss it if appropriate, wait for the page to settle, and capture again. A URL screenshot workflow may remove supported cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets automatically. |
| The full-screen result does not match expectations | Official Microsoft instructions do not specify the output across every dual-monitor configuration. | Inspect the saved image. Use a rectangular snip to select one display area explicitly, or capture the page through a website screenshot tool. |
| The screen layout feels reversed or the pointer crosses unexpectedly | Display tiles may not match physical monitor positions. | Use Settings > System > Display, click Identify, then drag the tiles to match the desk arrangement. |
| Only the upper part of the website appears | A desktop screenshot captures the visible screen area, not the complete scrolling page. | Scroll and take multiple captures, or use a full-page browser capture or an API that supports full-page screenshots. |
Performance, reliability, and cost
- Fastest built-in save: Windows+PrtScn saves a full-screen screenshot directly, though the exact dual-monitor output is not specified by Microsoft.
- Most control over one monitor: Windows+Shift+S with a rectangular selection lets you mark the exact visible region.
- Reliability: Confirm the page has rendered and inspect the resulting file. For a carefully bounded capture, use a rectangle rather than relying on undocumented multi-monitor full-screen behavior.
- Cost: These Windows capture steps use built-in features and require no screenshot service purchase. ScreenshotNeo has a free tier and paid plans if you need repeatable URL-based captures, full-page images, or automation.
FAQ
How do I take a screenshot of only one monitor?
Press Windows+Shift+S and drag a rectangular selection over that monitor, or use Window mode to capture a browser window. This gives you a defined area without depending on how full-screen capture treats two displays.
Can Windows capture both monitors in one image?
Microsoft documents full-screen screenshot modes, but the referenced official instructions do not specify whether two monitors are combined or captured separately in every setup. Check the resulting image for your configuration.
Where does Windows+PrtScn save screenshots?
Microsoft documents the location as Pictures\Screenshots.
Can I capture an entire webpage with Windows+Shift+S?
It captures a screen region, not a scrolling page. Use a browser full-page capture feature or a website screenshot API for content below the fold.
Does the same Snipping Tool shortcut work on Windows 10?
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions list Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025, so Windows 11 is the current context for this guide.
