Where to Find Screenshots Taken with Snipping Tool on Windows
Find Snipping Tool captures in Pictures > Screenshots, recover unsaved snips, and fix missing files on Windows 10 and 11.
Start in File Explorer at Pictures > Screenshots. Microsoft says Snipping Tool automatically saves captured snips there. If the image is missing, check Snipping Tool’s automatic-save and folder settings, then use the capture notification, clipboard, or Save as Image command to recover it.
Open the default Screenshots folder
- Open File Explorer from the taskbar.
- In the navigation pane, select Pictures.
- Open Screenshots.
This Explorer path is the documented location for screenshots on Windows. The literal path can differ when your profile uses folder redirection, OneDrive, or a custom location, so use the navigation path and verify the configured folder in Snipping Tool. Microsoft’s Print Screen guidance also points to Pictures > Screenshots.
Check Snipping Tool’s save settings
On current Windows 11 builds:
- Open Snipping Tool.
- Select See more (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Settings.
- Review the automatic-save option and the default Screenshots folder.
Turn automatic saving on if you want future captures written to disk, and note the folder shown there. The destination may have been changed from the default.
Windows 10 and older Snipping Tool interfaces use different labels. You may see Save Snip or Save As instead of the Windows 11 controls. The underlying recovery options are the same: reopen the capture, paste it from the clipboard, or save it manually. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions cover both Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Recover a snip you just captured
Use the notification
Immediately after a capture, select the notification that appears. It reopens the snip in Snipping Tool, where you can choose Save as Image, pick a folder, and enter a filename.
Paste from the clipboard
Snipping Tool copies the capture to its window and the clipboard. Open Paint, an email, or another image-capable application, press Ctrl+V, then save the pasted image. Clipboard contents can be replaced by your next copy operation, so save promptly. See Microsoft’s explanation of copying screen contents.
Save a deliberate copy
With the snip open in Snipping Tool, select Save as Image. This creates an additional file at the location and filename you choose, regardless of the automatic-save destination.
Why the Screenshots folder is empty
- Automatic saving is disabled: enable it in Snipping Tool > See more > Settings, or save each snip with Save as Image.
- The folder was changed: use the folder shown in Settings rather than assuming the default.
- You used a clipboard-only workflow: paste the image into another app and save it.
- You are checking the wrong Windows account: open that account’s Pictures folder and inspect any redirected or synchronized location.
- The notification disappeared: open Snipping Tool and check whether the capture remains in the app; otherwise repeat the capture and save it manually.
- You used another shortcut: Print Screen and Windows+Shift+S can produce different save or clipboard behavior depending on your Windows settings. Check both the app and clipboard.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 differences
| Situation | Windows 11 | Windows 10 or older interface |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic-save controls | Snipping Tool > See more > Settings | May not expose the same settings page or labels |
| Manual save command | Save as Image | Save Snip or Save As |
| Finding the default folder | File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots | Use the same Explorer path, then verify Snipping Tool’s configured destination |
Do not assume that a Windows 11 click sequence appears identically on Windows 10. If a menu item is missing, look for the equivalent Save Snip or Save As command.
A reliable recovery checklist
- Check Pictures > Screenshots.
- Open Snipping Tool settings and confirm automatic saving and the destination folder.
- If the capture was recent, select its notification.
- Try Ctrl+V in Paint or another app.
- Use Save as Image (or Save Snip/Save As) and choose a known folder.
- Search File Explorer for recently modified
.png,.jpg, or.jpegfiles if the folder was redirected.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need repeatable website screenshots instead of a local Windows snip, ScreenshotNeo captures a URL with one request. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

FAQ
Are Snipping Tool screenshots always PNG files?
PNG is common, but the exact format depends on how you save the image and the available Save as Image choices. Check the filename extension after saving.
Does finding a snip in Snipping Tool prove it was saved?
No. A capture can remain in the app or clipboard without having a file in the Screenshots folder. Use Save as Image to create a definite file copy.
Can I change where future screenshots go?
On supported Windows 11 versions, review the automatic-save and default-folder controls in Snipping Tool settings. If your build lacks those controls, save manually to your preferred folder.
What if I copied something else after taking the snip?
The clipboard may now contain the newer item. Check Snipping Tool or repeat the capture, then save it immediately.
