To capture a website in Firefox on macOS, open the page and press Command+Shift+S. Choose a region, a highlighted page element, Save full page, or Save visible. Select Download to save the PNG to Firefox’s default download folder, or Copy to put it on the clipboard. Mozilla’s Firefox Screenshots guide documents these options and shortcuts.

Capture a webpage in Firefox

  1. Open the webpage you want to capture in Firefox.
  2. Open the screenshot tool by pressing Command+Shift+S. Alternatively, right-click an empty part of the page and choose Take Screenshot.
  3. Choose what to capture:
    • Custom region: drag over the area, then adjust its edges if needed.
    • Page element: move the pointer over the page until the desired element is highlighted, then select it. Adjust the selection if needed.
    • Full page: choose Save full page to include content beyond the visible viewport.
    • Visible area: choose Save visible to capture the page area currently displayed in the browser.
  4. Choose Download to save the image, or Copy to paste it into another application.

While the screenshot interface is open, Command+S saves and Command+C copies. Press Esc to cancel. Firefox saves downloaded screenshots as PNG images in its default download location.

Add a Screenshot button to the Firefox toolbar

If you capture pages often, you can put the screenshot command on the toolbar:

  1. Open the Firefox menu.
  2. Choose More Tools, then Customize Toolbar….
  3. Drag the Screenshot item to the toolbar.
  4. Select Done.

Menu labels can change between Firefox versions. If the option is absent, use the keyboard shortcut or context menu instead.

Choose Firefox or macOS screen capture

Firefox Screenshots captures webpage content. It can capture the full page even when it extends beyond the viewport. macOS screenshots capture what is displayed on the screen or in a window.

What you need Use Result
The webpage, including content below the fold Firefox: Command+Shift+S, then Save full page A PNG of the webpage
The visible webpage area Firefox: choose Save visible A PNG of the displayed page area
A selected area of the screen macOS: Command+Shift+4 A screen capture saved to the desktop
The whole screen macOS: Command+Shift+3 A screen capture saved to the desktop
A particular window Press Command+Shift+4, then Space, then click the window A window capture saved to the desktop

Use Firefox when you need webpage content rather than the browser chrome or the full desktop. Use macOS when the browser window, other apps, or the screen as displayed are part of the evidence. Mozilla’s Mac screenshot instructions cover the operating-system shortcuts. To crop a saved macOS screenshot in Preview, choose Tools > Crop, or press Command+K.

Save, copy, and find the screenshot

  • Download: saves the PNG to Firefox’s configured default download folder. If you are unsure where that is, check Firefox’s download settings or open its downloads list.
  • Copy: puts the screenshot on the clipboard so you can paste it into a document, chat, or image editor. Switch to the destination app and press Command+V.
  • Keyboard while capturing: Command+S saves, Command+C copies, and Esc cancels.

If you need a different image format or a repeatable capture workflow, save the PNG and convert it with an image editor, or use an API that returns the format you need.

Privacy notes

Mozilla’s feature-specific explanation says Firefox Screenshots collects interaction events such as using Copy or Save full page, but not the URL or details of the captured image. This statement applies to Firefox Screenshots as described on its support page; it should not be generalized to other Firefox features or services. See Mozilla’s explanation.

Or skip the browser setup

For repeatable captures, automated workflows, or screenshots requested by an AI agent, use ScreenshotNeo, a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The example below requests a WebP screenshot; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" \
  -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY \
  --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com \
  -o shot.webp
import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({
  access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY',
  url: 'https://stripe.com'
});
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed: ${res.status}`);
const image = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', image));

Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL. The API can also capture full pages or a selected element, set viewport and device options, wait for a selector or network idle, apply custom CSS or JavaScript, and return PDFs. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

  • Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are handled before the screenshot; each cleanup step can be turned off.
  • Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
  • There is a free plan with 1,000 screenshots per month and no card required. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots; every feature is available on every plan.

Troubleshooting

The shortcut does not open the screenshot tool

Make sure Firefox is the active app and press Command+Shift+S. If the shortcut still does not work, right-click an empty part of the webpage and choose Take Screenshot. You can also add the Screenshot item to the toolbar through More Tools > Customize Toolbar….

“Take Screenshot” is missing from the context menu

Right-click an empty part of the page, rather than a link or control that opens a different context menu. Use the keyboard shortcut or toolbar button if the page’s own context menu gets in the way.

The full-page capture appears incomplete

Confirm you chose Save full page, rather than Save visible. Some pages load content only as you scroll or after a delay; allow the page to finish loading and try again. For a page that requires custom waits or repeatable rendering, use an automated capture workflow with the appropriate wait condition.

Copy does not paste anything

Keep the screenshot interface open while using Command+C, or select Copy in the interface. Then paste with Command+V in an app that accepts images. If the clipboard is unavailable to the destination, choose Download and insert the saved PNG instead.

I cannot find the downloaded PNG

Firefox uses its configured default download location. Check the downloads list and Firefox’s download settings to find the folder; the screenshot is a PNG.

I captured the wrong area

Press Esc to cancel and start again. For a precise crop, drag a custom region and adjust its edges before saving. To capture a whole page or the current viewport, choose the corresponding full-page or visible option.

Performance, reliability, and cost

Firefox’s built-in tool is the simplest choice for a one-off image of a page already open: it needs no API key or separate capture service. Full-page captures can take longer on long pages or pages that load content dynamically, so let the page settle first. A local capture also depends on the page having loaded correctly in that browser session.

For repeated or server-side work, an API can avoid keeping a browser open and can expose controls such as viewport, wait conditions, and output format. ScreenshotNeo’s stated billing rules exclude bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits; use its response headers to distinguish page verdict and billing status. Its free tier is 1,000 screenshots monthly, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Firefox’s built-in screenshot has no per-capture API charge.
