How to Take a Screenshot of a Web Page in Firefox Without Extensions
Use Firefox’s built-in screenshot tool to save a full web page, the visible viewport, a selected region, or a page element without installing an extension.
Firefox has a built-in screenshot tool, so you do not need an extension to capture a web page. Open the page, launch the screenshot interface, choose Save full page for the entire page or Save visible for just the current viewport, then download the image or copy it to the clipboard.
This guide covers Firefox’s standard screenshot workflow on desktop. The keyboard shortcut is Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows and Linux, and Command + Shift + S on macOS. Mozilla documents the built-in feature for capturing visible parts of a page or a full page. See Mozilla’s Firefox screenshot instructions.
1. Capture a full web page in Firefox
- Open the web page you want to capture in Firefox.
- Right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot. If the context menu is inconvenient, use Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows or Linux, or Command + Shift + S on macOS.
- In the screenshot interface, choose Save full page to capture the whole page, including content beyond the visible viewport.
- Choose Download to save an image in Firefox’s default download folder, or choose Copy to put the screenshot on the clipboard.
Mozilla also documents Ctrl + S or Command + S for saving after selecting what to capture, and Ctrl + C or Command + C for copying it.
2. Choose the right capture area
| Option | What it captures | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Save full page | The whole page, including portions below the current viewport. | You need a complete record of a long article, landing page, or other page. |
| Save visible | The portion currently visible in the browser window. | You only need to show the current screen or a particular page state. |
| Drag a region | A rectangle you select on the page. | You need a specific part of the current view. |
| Select a page element | An automatically highlighted element on the page. | You want a particular element rather than the entire page or viewport. |
Full-page and visible screenshots answer different needs. If the reader of your screenshot must see what is below the fold, select Save full page; Save visible does not include off-screen content.
3. Save or copy the screenshot
After choosing the capture area, use the screenshot interface’s Download action to save an image, or Copy to place it on the clipboard for pasting into another app. Mozilla’s documented keyboard alternatives are Ctrl + S / Command + S to save and Ctrl + C / Command + C to copy, after selecting what to capture.
4. Troubleshooting
| What you see | Likely explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The image shows only what was on screen. | Save visible captures the current viewport. | Open the screenshot interface again and choose Save full page. |
| You cannot find the downloaded image. | Firefox saves downloads to its default download folder. | Check Firefox’s download location and recent downloads. |
| The keyboard shortcut does not open screenshots. | The shortcut depends on the operating system, or focus may be in a context where it does not activate the tool. | Use Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows/Linux or Command + Shift + S on macOS. You can also right-click an empty page area and choose Take Screenshot. |
| You need only a portion of the page. | A full-page capture includes more than the desired area. | Use the region selection or choose the automatically highlighted page element. |
| The screenshot feature is unavailable or behaves differently. | Mozilla’s standard instructions do not enumerate every site, browser configuration, or managed-browser policy. | Try the documented context-menu and shortcut paths. If neither exposes the feature, check your browser configuration or organization’s browser policies. |
5. Practical limits and workflow notes
- Capture the page state you need. The built-in workflow captures the page as presented in the browser. Navigate to the relevant state before taking the screenshot.
- Pick the output area before saving. Use full page for a complete page, visible for the current viewport, or a region or element for a focused capture.
- Choose download or clipboard based on the next step. Download creates an image file in Firefox’s default download folder; Copy is useful when you plan to paste the result elsewhere.
- Cost and performance: Firefox’s built-in screenshot workflow does not require installing an extension or making an API request. The cited Mozilla instructions do not specify capture-time guarantees, file-size limits, or a comprehensive compatibility list, so results can depend on the particular page and browser environment.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need repeatable screenshots from code, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture flow accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
For the exact request options, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
The API also supports full-page and element capture, viewport and device settings, waits, custom CSS and JavaScript, request blocking, custom headers and cookies, caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture, and PDF options. Plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is available on every plan.
