How to Take a Full-Screen Screenshot on a Desktop
Capture your entire desktop on Windows, Mac, or GNOME Ubuntu, then save, paste, troubleshoot, or automate the result.
A full-screen screenshot captures everything currently visible on your desktop display. The shortcut depends on your operating system:
- Windows 10/11: press PrtSc to copy the whole screen to the clipboard, or use Snipping Tool and choose Full screen to save a file.
- macOS: press Shift+Command+3. The image is saved to the desktop. Hold Control as well to copy it to the clipboard.
- GNOME-based Ubuntu: press Shift+Print. Ubuntu saves the image in
Pictures/Screenshotsand copies it to the clipboard.
These shortcuts capture the desktop display itself. A webpage screenshot service captures a URL in a browser instead, which is useful when you need a repeatable image of a page rather than your current monitor.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Copy the entire screen with Print Screen
- Arrange the desktop exactly as you want it captured.
- Press PrtSc (also labeled PrtScn or Print Screen).
- Open Paint, Word, an email, or another image-capable app.
- Press Ctrl+V to paste the screenshot.
- Use the app’s save command if you need an image file.
Microsoft documents PrtScn as a whole-screen capture copied to the clipboard. On some systems, Windows settings remap the key to open screen snipping instead; check the keyboard accessibility settings if its behavior differs. Microsoft’s keyboard shortcut reference explains the configurable behavior.
Save a file with Snipping Tool
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Choose the capture mode and select Full screen.
- Capture the screen.
- In the result window, select Save Snip, choose a folder and format, and save.
Snipping Tool also provides the Windows logo key+Shift+S overlay. That shortcut opens the overlay; it does not automatically guarantee a full-screen capture. Select the full-screen mode in the overlay before capturing. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool documentation covers the modes and save control.
If your keyboard has no Print Screen key
Some devices provide a device-specific fallback such as Fn+Windows+Space Bar. It is not universal, so check the keyboard or computer manufacturer’s documentation. Microsoft lists this possible fallback.
macOS
Save the entire screen
- Close or move anything that should not appear in the image.
- Press and release Shift+Command+3.
- macOS saves the screenshot to the desktop by default. A thumbnail may appear briefly in a corner; click it to edit, or wait for it to disappear.
Apple documents this shortcut and the desktop save behavior in its Mac screenshot guide.
Copy instead of saving
Hold Control while pressing Shift+Command+3. The full-screen image goes to the clipboard, where you can paste it into a document, message, or editor.
Use the Screenshot controls
- Press Shift+Command+5.
- Choose the full-screen capture button.
- Open Options to select a destination, set a timer, and configure pointer or click-display options.
- Capture the screen.
Apple’s Screenshot and screen recording documentation describes these controls. Some apps, including Apple TV, may restrict screenshots of their windows.
GNOME-based Ubuntu
Capture the entire screen directly
- Prepare the desktop.
- Press Shift+Print.
- Ubuntu captures the whole screen, saves the image in
Pictures/Screenshots, and copies it to the clipboard.
Ubuntu documents this shortcut in its keyboard shortcut reference.
Choose full screen from the screenshot overlay
- Press Print.
- In the screenshot interface, select Screen.
- Capture the image and use the displayed save or copy controls.
These instructions apply to GNOME-based Ubuntu. Other Linux distributions and desktop environments can assign different shortcuts or use different screenshot tools. See your environment’s keyboard shortcut settings if Print does something else. Ubuntu’s screenshots documentation describes the GNOME interface and save location.
Choose the right output: clipboard or file
| System | Whole-screen shortcut | Default result | How to save or paste |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows | PrtSc | Clipboard | Paste with Ctrl+V; save from the destination app |
| Windows | Snipping Tool, Full screen | Capture preview | Select Save Snip |
| macOS | Shift+Command+3 | File on desktop | Open the file or click its thumbnail |
| macOS | Control+Shift+Command+3 | Clipboard | Paste with Command+V |
| GNOME Ubuntu | Shift+Print | File and clipboard | Open Pictures/Screenshots or paste |
Before you capture
- Hide private messages, passwords, notifications, and unrelated windows.
- Move the pointer if you do not want it visible.
- For a support report, keep the error and the address bar visible.
- On multi-display setups, confirm whether your shortcut captures the intended display arrangement and crop afterward if needed.
- Check the output destination before repeating a capture so you do not overwrite or misplace the first file.
Troubleshooting
Nothing appears after pressing the shortcut
On Windows, PrtSc normally places an image on the clipboard without opening a window. Paste into Paint or another app to verify it worked. On macOS, look on the desktop. On Ubuntu, check Pictures/Screenshots and the clipboard.
Windows opens the snipping overlay
The Print Screen key may be configured to open screen snipping. Use the overlay’s full-screen mode, or change the Print Screen setting and use Snipping Tool’s explicit Full screen mode.
Windows has no visible screenshot file
PrtSc copies rather than saves a file. Paste it into Paint and choose File → Save as, or capture through Snipping Tool and select Save Snip.
The Mac screenshot is not on the desktop
Open Shift+Command+5 and inspect Options for the selected save destination. If you held Control, the image was copied to the clipboard instead of saved.
Ubuntu uses a different shortcut
The documented keys apply to GNOME-based Ubuntu. KDE, Xfce, other distributions, and customized keyboard layouts may use different commands. Open the desktop environment’s keyboard settings and search for screenshot actions.
An app window is blank or blocked
Some applications restrict screenshots. Apple specifically notes that some apps, including Apple TV, may not allow screenshots of their windows. Use an allowed view or the application’s own export function.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you need is a repeatable screenshot of a webpage rather than the physical desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. It accepts cookie and consent banners, removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports its result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options, including full-page capture, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, CSS and JavaScript, waits, blocking rules, headers, cookies, geolocation, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture, PDFs, and usage reporting.

ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Performance, reliability, and cost notes
- A keyboard shortcut is immediate because the operating system captures the current display locally.
- Clipboard captures are convenient for one-off pastes; saved files are easier to attach, archive, and rename.
- For webpages that load content late, an API capture should use a selector wait, delay, or network-idle wait. Full-page mode can load lazy images before capture.
- Use caching with a chosen TTL when the same URL is requested repeatedly. Use asynchronous jobs and signed webhooks for long-running or bulk work.
- ScreenshotNeo’s bulk endpoint accepts up to 100 URLs per call. Its paid plans include all features, and yearly billing gives two months free.
