How to Take a Full-Screen Screenshot With a Keyboard Shortcut
Use the right full-screen screenshot shortcut for Windows, Mac, or Chromebook, find the saved file, and fix missing-key problems.
Use the shortcut for your operating system: Windows: Windows + PrtScn. Mac: Shift + Command + 3. Chromebook: Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. These shortcuts capture the entire screen. Windows and ChromeOS save an image automatically; macOS normally saves it to the desktop.
Quick reference
| System | Full-screen shortcut | Default result | Default location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 10/11 | Windows + PrtScn | Image file | Pictures/Screenshots |
| macOS | Shift + Command + 3 | Image file | Desktop |
| ChromeOS | Shift + Ctrl + Show windows | Capture controls, then full screen | Downloads |
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Save the whole screen automatically
- Press and hold the Windows key.
- Press PrtScn (also labeled Print Screen or PrtSc).
- Release both keys. The screen may briefly dim.
- Open Pictures → Screenshots to find the PNG file.
This shortcut captures every monitor as one full desktop image when Windows is configured for multiple displays.
If your keyboard has no Print Screen key
On supported laptops, press Fn + Windows + Space Bar. The exact Fn behavior depends on the keyboard manufacturer. If that combination does not work, use Snipping Tool.
Use Print Screen or Snipping Tool
- PrtScn alone copies the entire screen to the Clipboard. Open Paint, an image editor, or a document and press Ctrl + V to paste it, then save the image.
- Windows + Shift + S opens Snipping Tool. Choose the full-screen mode after the toolbar appears. You can also capture a window or rectangular region.
Clipboard captures are useful when you want to paste immediately, but they are not files until you save them.
Mac
Capture every display
- Press and release Shift + Command + 3 together.
- Wait for the thumbnail, if enabled, to appear in the corner.
- Open the desktop to find the screenshot file.
To copy the capture instead of saving it, hold Control as well: Control + Shift + Command + 3. Paste it with Command + V.
Change Mac screenshot settings
Press Shift + Command + 5 on macOS Mojave 10.14 or later. The Screenshot app lets you choose full screen, a window, or a selected portion; set a timer; choose a save location; show the pointer; and control the floating thumbnail. Some protected applications, including Apple TV, may block screenshots of their windows.
Chromebook and ChromeOS
- Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key usually looks like a rectangle followed by two vertical lines.
- In the capture controls, choose the full-screen option.
- Open the Files app and select Downloads. ChromeOS normally saves screenshots there.
On an external keyboard without a Show windows key, press Ctrl + Shift + F5. The capture controls also support partial-screen and window captures. You can change the destination folder in the screen-capture settings.
Which method should you choose?
| Need | Best method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Windows file saved immediately | Windows + PrtScn | Creates a file without opening an app |
| Windows paste into another app | PrtScn | Copies the full display to Clipboard |
| Windows window or region | Windows + Shift + S | Snipping Tool offers capture modes |
| Mac full screen | Shift + Command + 3 | Saves to the desktop by default |
| Mac timing and destination controls | Shift + Command + 5 | Opens Screenshot settings |
| Chromebook full screen | Shift + Ctrl + Show windows | Opens the capture toolbar |
Troubleshooting
Nothing happens when I press the shortcut
- Windows: Hold Fn and try the laptop’s alternate key, or use Windows + Shift + S. Some keyboards require the function-lock state to be changed.
- Mac: Press and release all three keys together rather than holding them. Check that another utility has not remapped screenshot shortcuts in System Settings.
- Chromebook: Use Ctrl + Shift + F5 with an external keyboard.
I cannot find the screenshot
Check the default folder first: Pictures/Screenshots on Windows, the desktop on Mac, and Downloads on ChromeOS. If you used a Clipboard shortcut, paste into an editor because no file was created. On Mac, open the Screenshot app to see or change the save location.
The image is the wrong size
A keyboard shortcut captures the current display resolution and scaling. Maximize the window, set the required display arrangement, or use a region/window tool when you need a specific crop. For a web page that extends below the visible viewport, a desktop shortcut captures only what is currently visible; use a full-page browser capture or an API instead.
A protected app shows a black image
Some apps intentionally prevent screenshots for copyright or security reasons. The operating system shortcut cannot override that restriction.
Only one monitor appears
Multi-monitor behavior varies by operating-system version and display settings. Try capturing each display with the system’s window or region tool, or temporarily choose the display you need as the primary screen.
When a keyboard shortcut is not enough
Keyboard shortcuts are local and immediate, but they cannot reliably automate a web page, wait for lazy-loaded content, remove consent banners, or capture an entire page below the fold. For repeatable website captures, use ScreenshotNeo, a website screenshot API and MCP server.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The request can capture a full page, load lazy images, apply a device or viewport, use dark mode, wait for a selector or network idle, run custom JavaScript, hide selectors, and more. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
See the complete parameter list in the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));
An MCP server also provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, and every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Reliability, performance, and cost notes
- Local shortcuts are nearly instant and have no service cost, but they require the correct keyboard and an active desktop session.
- For web automation, wait for a selector, a delay, or network idle so dynamic content is ready. Full-page captures can take longer than viewport captures because more content must render.
- Cache repeated URLs with a chosen TTL when the page does not change often. Use async jobs and signed webhooks for large batches, and bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call.
- Keep API keys out of browser code and public repositories. Store them in server-side environment variables.
