How to Take a Full-Screen Screenshot on macOS
Press Shift-Command-3 to capture your entire Mac screen. Learn where screenshots go, how to copy them, change options, and troubleshoot failures.
Press and release Shift-Command-3 to capture the entire screen on macOS. The screenshot normally saves to your desktop. To copy it to the clipboard instead, hold Control: Control-Shift-Command-3. Apple’s instructions document both shortcuts.
1. Take a full-screen screenshot with the keyboard
- Arrange your desktop exactly as you want it to appear.
- Press and release Shift + Command + 3 together.
- Wait for the screenshot thumbnail to appear briefly in the corner, or wait for the file to finish saving.
- Open the desktop to find the resulting image.
The default filename starts with Screen Shot and includes the date and time. The shortcut captures the whole display, including visible windows, menus, the Dock and the pointer when pointer capture is enabled.
2. Copy the full screen directly to the clipboard
Hold Control while using the full-screen shortcut:
Control-Shift-Command-3
No screenshot file is required. Open an app such as Mail, Messages, Notes or an image editor and press Command + V to paste the image. If nothing pastes, repeat the shortcut and confirm that the destination app accepts images from the clipboard.
3. Use Screenshot for timers and capture options
Press Shift + Command + 5 to open the macOS Screenshot app. It provides controls for capturing the entire screen, a window or a selected portion, plus screen recording controls.
- Open Screenshot with Shift-Command-5.
- Choose the entire-screen capture icon.
- Open Options to configure the timer, save location, floating thumbnail and pointer visibility.
- Click Capture.
A timer is useful when you need to open a menu, expand a panel or move the pointer before capture. Changing the save location is useful when screenshots belong in a project folder instead of the desktop. The floating thumbnail lets you open the image for quick markup before it is filed away. Apple documents these controls in its Mac User Guide.
4. Where macOS saves screenshots
With the default settings, screenshots are saved on the desktop. Their names begin with Screen Shot followed by the capture date and time.
To choose another destination, open Shift-Command-5, select Options, and choose a folder. The setting applies to subsequent captures made through Screenshot and its shortcuts. If a file appears to be missing, check the selected folder, search Finder for Screen Shot, and confirm that the capture completed rather than being copied only to the clipboard.
5. Editing the screenshot thumbnail
When the floating thumbnail is enabled, click it before it disappears. You can then review or mark up the screenshot and save or share the result. If you do not click the thumbnail, macOS saves the original capture automatically after the short preview period.
6. Formats and macOS version details
Screenshot behavior depends on your Mac and macOS version. Apple states that the Screenshot app is available on macOS Mojave 10.14 and later. On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Screenshot can offer SDR (PNG) or HDR (HEIF) capture formats. Those choices are conditional on both the operating system and hardware; they are not available on every Mac.
7. Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing happens after pressing the shortcut | The keys were not pressed together, a keyboard shortcut was changed, or another app intercepts it. | Press and release all keys at once. Try Shift-Command-5. Then check System Settings’ Keyboard shortcut settings and test with the built-in keyboard. |
| The screenshot is not on the desktop | The save destination was changed in Screenshot. | Open Shift-Command-5 → Options and inspect the selected folder. Search Finder for files beginning Screen Shot. |
| You cannot paste the screenshot | You used the file-saving shortcut or the destination app does not accept image clipboard data. | Use Control-Shift-Command-3, then paste into an image-capable app with Command-V. |
| The thumbnail never appears | Floating thumbnails are disabled, or the preview has already expired. | Check Shift-Command-5 → Options → Show Floating Thumbnail. The file may still have been saved. |
| A window or app cannot be captured | Some apps restrict screenshots. Apple gives Apple TV as an example. | Use a permitted surface or consult the app’s documentation. Do not assume protected media windows can be captured. |
| The capture includes the wrong desktop | Multiple displays or Spaces are active and the arrangement changed before capture. | Arrange the displays and windows first, then use the full-screen shortcut on the intended display. |
8. Reliability, speed and file handling
The keyboard shortcut is the fastest method because it requires no application setup. Screenshot is more reliable for repeatable workflows because its timer, destination and pointer settings are visible before capture. For many captures, choose a dedicated folder and periodically archive or delete old files; filenames include timestamps to make sorting easier.
Full-screen images can be large, especially on Retina displays. Crop or resize copies when sending them through chat or attaching them to tickets. Keep the original when you may need to zoom into small interface details.
9. Capture a website without setting up a browser
If your goal is a clean image of a web page rather than the physical Mac desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot from one HTTP request. It can capture PNG, JPEG or WebP, and its options cover full-page captures, device presets, custom viewports, Retina scale, dark mode, CSS selectors, waits, custom headers and cookies, blocking rules, caching and more. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the complete parameter list.
Or skip the browser setup
Cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. An MCP server lets Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
