What Shortcut Key Takes a Full-Screen Screenshot?

It depends on your operating system. Use the shortcut for your platform:

Platform Full-screen shortcut What happens
Windows Windows + PrtScn Captures the entire screen and saves it in Pictures > Screenshots.
Mac Shift + Command + 3 Captures the entire screen and normally saves the image to the desktop.
Chromebook Ctrl + Show windows Opens the capture controls; choose the full-screen option.
Ubuntu GNOME Shift + Print Captures the entire screen.

There is no single shortcut that works on every computer. Your keyboard layout, desktop environment, or system settings can also change the behavior.

Windows: capture and save the whole screen

  1. Press Windows + PrtScn at the same time.
  2. Open File Explorer.
  3. Go to Pictures > Screenshots.
  4. Open the newest image.

On some keyboards, the Print Screen key is labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Scr. A laptop may require the Fn key as well, so try Fn + Windows + PrtScn if the normal combination does nothing.

The full-screen screenshot shortcut changes with the operating system and keyboard.

Do not confuse full-screen capture with region capture

Windows + Shift + S opens the Snipping Tool overlay. It is useful when you want to select a rectangle, window, or other area, but it is not the direct full-screen-save shortcut. The result is generally copied to the clipboard, where you can paste it into an app or save it from the capture notification.

Mac: capture the entire display

  1. Press Shift + Command + 3.
  2. Wait for the screenshot thumbnail to appear briefly.
  3. Find the file on your desktop unless you have changed the screenshot destination.

To copy the full-screen image directly to the Clipboard instead of saving it as a file, hold Control too: Control + Shift + Command + 3. You can then paste it into Mail, Messages, an editor, or another application.

Multiple displays

With more than one display connected, macOS can capture the available screen area according to its screenshot settings. If you need only one display or a selected window, press Shift + Command + 4, then press Space to select a window, or use the screenshot toolbar with Shift + Command + 5.

Chromebook: choose full screen in the capture controls

  1. Press Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key usually looks like a rectangle with two vertical lines beside it.
  2. When the capture controls open, select the Full screen option.
  3. Click or tap the screen to capture it.

Chromebook’s shortcut opens the screenshot interface rather than immediately saving a full-screen image. The capture controls also offer partial-screen and window modes.

If an external keyboard has no Show windows key, try Ctrl + Shift + F5 to open the capture interface. On some external keyboards, Search or Launcher is represented by a Windows or Command key.

Ubuntu GNOME: capture the entire screen

  1. Press Shift + Print.
  2. Open the screenshot location shown by your desktop if a notification appears.

Pressing Print by itself opens the screenshot tool, while Alt + Print captures the active window. These shortcuts are documented for Ubuntu’s GNOME desktop; other Linux distributions and desktop environments may use different bindings.

Where did my screenshot save?

System Default result How to locate it
Windows Saved file File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots
Mac Saved file Desktop, unless the screenshot destination was changed
Chromebook Capture created from the screenshot controls Check the Files app and the notification shown after capture
Ubuntu GNOME Capture created by the screenshot tool Use the location shown by the desktop notification or screenshot tool

If you used a clipboard variant, open an image editor or document and press Ctrl + V on Windows/Linux or Command + V on Mac. A clipboard capture may not create a file until you paste and save it.

Common problems and fixes

Problem Likely cause Fix
Nothing happens on Windows The laptop maps Print Screen through the function layer. Try Fn + Windows + PrtScn, then check Pictures > Screenshots.
Windows opens a selection overlay You pressed Windows + Shift + S. Use Windows + PrtScn for an immediate full-screen file.
Mac image is not on the desktop The screenshot location was customized, or the capture was copied to the Clipboard. Press Shift + Command + 5 and inspect screenshot options; paste into an app if you used Control.
Chromebook shortcut cannot find Show windows The external keyboard lacks the Chromebook-specific key. Use Ctrl + Shift + F5 to open capture, then choose Full screen.
Ubuntu shortcut behaves differently You are using another desktop environment or changed keyboard bindings. Open the desktop keyboard settings and search for Screenshot, or launch the screenshot tool with Print.
The screenshot is black A protected video, remote desktop, hardware overlay, or application security policy may block capture. Try the system screenshot tool, disable protected playback where permitted, or capture a non-protected window.
A menu disappears before capture The shortcut changes focus or closes transient menus. Use a delayed capture from the system screenshot tool, or photograph the state from a separate device when appropriate.

Choosing the right capture method

  • Need the entire monitor immediately? Use the platform shortcut in the table.
  • Need one window or a region? Use the system capture interface instead of the full-screen-save shortcut.
  • Need an image of a web page for documentation, monitoring, or automation? A browser-based capture service is more repeatable than a manual desktop shortcut.

Or skip the browser setup

For automated website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Automated capture can remove common overlays before saving a clean website image.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const buffer = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
require('fs').writeFileSync('shot.webp', buffer);

The API also supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, PDF settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, click actions, selector hiding, selector or network-idle waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage information, and an OpenAPI specification. Familiar parameter names used by other screenshot APIs are accepted to make migration easier.

ScreenshotNeo includes an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Choose the capture method that matches the job: a keyboard shortcut for a one-off desktop image, or an API for repeatable website captures.

Performance, reliability, and cost notes

  • Desktop shortcuts: They are immediate and free, but depend on the operating system, keyboard mapping, display state, and the application being captured.
  • Clipboard versus file: Clipboard captures are convenient for pasting but can be lost when another application replaces clipboard contents. Save important captures as files.
  • Automated web captures: Use an explicit wait for a selector, delay, or network idle when a page renders asynchronously. Full-page mode is useful for long pages but can take longer than a viewport capture.
  • Billing: ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots. Failed loads, bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the verdict and billing result.
  • Caching: Set a cache TTL when repeated captures can reuse an acceptable image. Disable or shorten caching when freshness matters.
