Greenshot Screen Capture Shortcuts

A complete reference to Greenshot’s default shortcuts, capture controls, customization steps, and fixes when Print Screen does not work.

By the ScreenshotNeo team1 October 20265 min read

Greenshot runs in the Windows notification area and uses keyboard shortcuts for its main capture modes. The documented defaults are:

Capture Shortcut Result
Region Print Select any rectangular area.
Active window Alt + Print Capture the currently active window.
Full screen Ctrl + Print Capture the complete screen.
Last region Shift + Print Repeat the previous region or window capture.
Internet Explorer Ctrl + Shift + Print Capture the active Internet Explorer tab.

These are the defaults documented for Greenshot 1.2.10. Your installed version can have different assignments, so verify them under Settings → Hotkeys. See the official Greenshot usage help for the capture workflow.

How to use each Greenshot shortcut

Capture a region

  1. Press Print.
  2. Drag from one corner of the area to the opposite corner.
  3. Release the mouse button and choose an editor, file destination, clipboard, or another configured output.

While selecting, press Space to switch between free region selection and window selection. Use the arrow keys for pixel-level cursor movement. Hold Ctrl while pressing an arrow key to move by 10 pixels.

Capture the active window

Focus the window you want, then press Alt + Print. This captures the active window without requiring a manual rectangle. If interactive window selection is enabled, point at a child window and press PgDown to select it, such as a browser viewport inside a larger application window.

Capture the whole screen

Press Ctrl + Print to capture the complete screen. On a multi-monitor setup, check the resulting image and your output settings to confirm which display or display arrangement Greenshot includes.

Repeat the previous capture

Press Shift + Print to repeat the last region or window capture. This is useful for collecting a series of screenshots with the same dimensions.

Capture an Internet Explorer tab

With Internet Explorer active, press Ctrl + Shift + Print. This legacy shortcut is retained in the documented defaults; it may not be useful on systems where Internet Explorer is unavailable.

Capturing menus and context menus

Opening a capture command from Greenshot’s own menu can close the context menu you wanted to show. Instead:

  1. Press Print to start region capture.
  2. Open the application’s context menu.
  3. Press Space to switch to window mode if needed.
  4. Select the menu or its parent window.

Change Greenshot keyboard shortcuts

  1. Right-click the Greenshot icon in the notification area.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select the Hotkeys section.
  4. Click the shortcut field for Region, Window, Fullscreen, Last region, or Internet Explorer capture.
  5. Press the replacement key combination and save the settings.

If a key is unavailable in the settings panel, Greenshot’s FAQ describes configuration-file editing for special keys such as the Windows key or Pause key. Exit Greenshot first so it cannot overwrite your manual change. Edit the relevant entry, for example RegionHotkey=Win + P, then start Greenshot again. The same approach applies to the other capture entries documented in the official FAQ.

Shortcut troubleshooting checklist

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Print does nothing Greenshot is not running, the mapping changed, or another program owns the key. Check the notification area, open Settings → Hotkeys, and inspect competing screenshot or keyboard utilities.
Only some combinations work A modifier combination is reserved by another application or policy. Assign a different combination in Hotkeys and test it in a plain desktop window.
The wrong window is captured The target was not active, or interactive selection is enabled. Focus the target before pressing Alt + Print, or select the child window interactively.
A context menu disappears Opening Greenshot’s capture menu closed it. Start with Print, open the menu, then use Space and select it.
A special key cannot be entered The settings UI does not expose that key. Exit Greenshot and edit the corresponding configuration entry, then restart it.
Defaults differ from this table The installed release has different settings. Treat Settings → Hotkeys as authoritative for your installation.

Reliability and workflow tips

  • Keep Greenshot running in the notification area before relying on a shortcut.
  • Use Shift + Print for repeated screenshots that must share a size.
  • Use region mode for menus and transient UI because it lets you control the selection after the menu is open.
  • After changing a shortcut, test it with the editor or clipboard output before using it in a production workflow.
  • On managed computers, verify whether security software or another capture tool intercepts Print Screen.

When a desktop shortcut is the wrong tool

Greenshot is designed for an interactive Windows desktop. For repeatable captures of URLs, server-side jobs, PDFs, or AI-agent workflows, an API avoids desktop focus and hotkey conflicts.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output:

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const fs = require('node:fs/promises');
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));

Read the parameter reference and response details in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
