How to Take High-Quality Screenshots in DaVinci Resolve

Export sharp, correctly sized still frames from DaVinci Resolve, preserve your grade, avoid soft images, and automate web captures with ScreenshotNeo.

To take a high-quality screenshot in DaVinci Resolve, park the playhead on the exact frame, choose the viewer that matches your deliverable, and use Grab Still on the Color page when you need a grade reference. If you need a separate image file, export the still from the Gallery and then inspect its pixel dimensions and quality at 100%.

The correct workflow depends on what you mean by “screenshot”:

Goal Best starting point What to verify
Reusable color-grade reference Color page viewer → Grab Still The still is in the Gallery and includes grade information, not just a flat image.
Standalone image of the edited shot Timeline Viewer at the target frame Timeline resolution, titles, effects and compositing are present.
Native source-frame image Source Viewer at the target frame The saved file has the source clip dimensions you expect.

1. Prepare the frame before capturing

  1. Open the project and select the timeline or clip containing the frame.
  2. Move the playhead one frame at a time until the composition, expression, motion and edit point are exact.
  3. Decide whether the deliverable is the source clip or the finished timeline. Use the Source Viewer for a source frame; use the Timeline Viewer for the complete edit.
  4. Set the viewer to a useful zoom so you can inspect focus, fine detail and overlays. Viewer zoom changes what you see, but it does not create detail that is absent from the media.
  5. If the frame is color graded, open the Color page and check the image with scopes. Blackmagic Design describes the histogram as a way to reveal blown highlights and crushed shadows, while scopes show tonal and color components. Scopes help judge the grade; they do not confirm the exported file’s dimensions or compression.
  1. Go to the Color page.
  2. Position the playhead on the desired frame.
  3. Right-click the viewer and choose Grab Still.
  4. Resolve stores the result in the Gallery, where you can organize stills and compare grades.
  5. Remember that a Gallery still is more than an ordinary bitmap. The DaVinci Resolve 15 Definitive Guide describes it as a reference image that also carries the instructions needed to rebuild the correction. Use it for grade reference and reuse.

Blackmagic Design documents the Color page Gallery and the Grab Still workflow in its Resolve materials (Color page overview; DaVinci Resolve 15 Definitive Guide). Menu names can change between versions, so confirm the wording in your installed build.

3. Export a standalone image file

A Gallery still is not automatically the final image file you send to a client or place in documentation. In the Gallery, right-click the still and use the available export command. Resolve versions differ in the exact menu wording and available formats, so check the export dialog in your installation instead of assuming a particular format, bit depth or JPEG-quality value.

  1. Right-click the Gallery still.
  2. Choose the export option shown by your Resolve version.
  3. Select a destination and an available image format appropriate for the destination.
  4. Open the resulting file in an image viewer and inspect it at 100%.
  5. Check the saved file’s pixel width and height with your operating system’s image information panel or an image utility.

For a flat image that includes titles, effects and the whole timeline composite, create the still from the Timeline Viewer. For a clean source frame, use the Source Viewer when that is what your deliverable requires.

4. Choose the viewer and resolution deliberately

A 2023 Blackmagic Design forum discussion reports that Export Current Frame as Still from the Source Viewer produces the source clip’s resolution, while the Timeline Viewer produces the timeline resolution. Treat this as community-reported behavior, not a current specification, and verify the actual dimensions of your output.

If you need… Use… Reason
The finished edit at delivery size Timeline Viewer Timeline resolution governs the output and the frame can include graphics and compositing.
Maximum native detail from a camera clip Source Viewer The source clip may be larger than the timeline.
A grade reference you can reuse Color page Gallery The Gallery still preserves correction information as well as the reference image.

Resolve cannot recover detail that was never present in the source. Increasing a timeline or export dimension can enlarge pixels, but it cannot recreate lost focus or compression detail.

5. Quality checklist

  • Frame: confirm the timecode and that you did not capture one frame before or after the intended moment.
  • Viewer: select Source or Timeline based on the deliverable.
  • Dimensions: check the timeline or source dimensions before export and inspect the saved file afterward.
  • Grade: check exposure and color with scopes, then inspect the actual image.
  • Composition: verify that titles, overlays, effects and transitions required by the deliverable are visible.
  • Sharpness: view the exported image at 100% for softness, ringing or scaling artifacts.
  • Compression: use a lossless option when the installed export dialog provides one and the workflow requires it; verify the option in your version.
  • Color: compare the exported image in a color-managed viewer if color consistency matters. Do not judge only from a scaled-down preview.

6. Common problems and fixes

Problem Likely cause Fix
The image is smaller than expected You captured from a viewer with different dimensions, or the timeline is smaller than the source. Choose the intended viewer, inspect timeline and source dimensions, and verify the saved file’s pixel size.
The screenshot is soft Viewer scaling, a low-resolution source, an intermediate render, or an enlarged output. Capture the exact source or timeline frame, avoid unnecessary scaling, and inspect at 100%.
Titles or effects are missing The frame came from the Source Viewer rather than the finished timeline. Capture from the Timeline Viewer when the composite is required.
The grade looks different The export path, color management or viewer differs from the grading view. Check the Color page and scopes, export again, and compare the saved file in a color-managed viewer.
You only have a Gallery thumbnail You created a Gallery still but did not export it. Right-click the still and use the export command available in your Resolve version.
Highlights look clipped or shadows crushed The grade or display is outside the useful tonal range. Use the histogram and other scopes to identify the problem, adjust the grade, then inspect the exported image.
The menu label is different Resolve versions use different wording or locations. Search the current Color page Gallery and viewer context menus; verify the installed version’s manual and dialog.

7. Performance, reliability and storage

A single still export is usually a small operation compared with rendering a movie, but playback performance can affect how confidently you find the exact frame. If the timeline is struggling, wait for effects to display fully before choosing the frame and confirm that all required overlays have resolved.

For repeatable work, record the project name, timeline name, timecode, viewer used, source or timeline dimensions, export format and Resolve version alongside the image. Reopen the saved image after export rather than relying on a thumbnail. Keep the Gallery still when you may need to reproduce or compare the grade, and keep the flat exported file for delivery.

Or skip the browser setup

If the image you need is a web page rather than a Resolve frame, ScreenshotNeo provides a single-request screenshot API. It removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed. Responses identify the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server also lets Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf.

FAQ

Is Grab Still the same as exporting a PNG or JPEG?

No. Grab Still creates a Gallery still for reference and grade reuse. Export it separately when you need a standalone image file.

Should I use the Source Viewer or Timeline Viewer?

Use the Source Viewer for a native source frame and the Timeline Viewer for the finished edit at timeline size. Confirm the resulting dimensions because viewer behavior can vary by version.

Can a screenshot be higher quality than the original clip?

No. A larger output can contain more pixels, but it cannot restore detail lost through focus, source resolution or compression.

Do scopes improve the exported file?

Scopes help you evaluate tonal and color balance before export. They do not set the file’s dimensions or compression and cannot replace inspecting the saved image.

What should I preserve for a repeatable still?

Keep the Gallery still when grade reconstruction matters, and document the frame timecode, viewer, dimensions, export format and Resolve version with the delivered image.
