How to Take a Screenshot on a PC: Buttons and Shortcuts

Use Windows screenshot shortcuts for the full screen, one window, or a selected area, then save, edit, and troubleshoot captures.

Quick answer: Press Windows+Shift+S to select part of the screen, PrtScn to copy the whole screen, Windows+PrtScn to save the whole screen as a file, or Alt+PrtScn to copy only the active window.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 include these shortcuts and the built-in Snipping Tool. You do not need paid software for ordinary PC screenshots.

PC screenshot shortcuts at a glance

What you need Shortcut What happens Where it goes
Whole screen, copy only PrtScn Captures every visible display Clipboard; paste with Ctrl+V
Whole screen, save immediately Windows+PrtScn Captures the display and writes an image file Pictures/Screenshots
Current window only Alt+PrtScn Captures the focused window Clipboard; paste with Ctrl+V
Rectangle, freeform, window, or full screen Windows+Shift+S Opens the Snipping Tool overlay Clipboard and Snipping Tool notification
Video screen snip Windows+Shift+R Opens the video-capture overlay Snipping Tool
Keyboard without PrtScn on some hardware Fn+Windows+Space Bar Hardware fallback documented by Microsoft Depends on the capture mode

How to capture part of the screen

  1. Press Windows+Shift+S.
  2. Choose a mode from the Snipping Tool toolbar: rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen snip.
  3. Drag over the area, click the window, or select the full screen.
  4. Use the notification to open the capture in Snipping Tool.
  5. Press Ctrl+S to save, or Ctrl+C to copy it again.

This is the best shortcut when you need a specific region, a single application window, or a quick annotation before sharing.

How to take a full-screen screenshot

Copy the screen to the clipboard

Press PrtScn. Windows copies the entire visible screen to the clipboard. Open Paint, Word, an email, a chat, or another image-capable app and press Ctrl+V. Save the pasted image from that application.

Save the screen as a file automatically

Press Windows+PrtScn. The display briefly dims and Windows saves the image in Pictures/Screenshots. Open File Explorer and select Pictures, then Screenshots.

How to screenshot one window

  1. Click the window you want so it is active.
  2. Press Alt+PrtScn.
  3. Paste with Ctrl+V into Paint, Word, email, or another image editor.
  4. Save the result.

This excludes other visible windows and is useful for application errors, settings dialogs, and documentation.

Use Snipping Tool for editing, delay, and text actions

Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu when a keyboard shortcut is not enough. It supports rectangular, freeform, window, and full-screen captures. After a snip, you can edit, crop, save, copy, and share it.

  • Alt+M: choose a snip mode.
  • Alt+N: start a new snip.
  • Alt+D: set a capture delay.
  • Ctrl+C: copy the capture.
  • Ctrl+S: save the capture.

A delay helps when you need to open a menu, tooltip, or other temporary state before the capture. Snipping Tool can also provide annotation, cropping, OCR, text actions, and sharing features where available in your Windows version.

Which method should you choose?

Situation Best choice Reason
You will paste the image immediately PrtScn Fastest full-screen clipboard capture
You need a saved PNG right away Windows+PrtScn Saves directly under Pictures/Screenshots
You only need the active app Alt+PrtScn Leaves other windows out
You need a rectangle or freeform shape Windows+Shift+S Lets you choose the capture boundary
You need delay, markup, OCR, or sharing Snipping Tool Provides editing and capture controls

Where screenshots are stored

  • PrtScn: the image remains in the clipboard until another copy operation replaces it. Paste it with Ctrl+V.
  • Alt+PrtScn: the active-window image remains in the clipboard. Paste it before copying something else.
  • Windows+PrtScn: the file is saved under Pictures/Screenshots.
  • Windows+Shift+S: the snip is copied and appears in a Snipping Tool notification; open it to save or edit.

Finding the Print Screen key

Look near the upper-right area of a full-size keyboard. Labels include PrtSc, PrtScn, and PrntScrn; SysRq may share the same key. Laptop and compact keyboards may put the function on another key or require Fn.

If your keyboard has no dedicated key, try Fn+Windows+Space Bar, which Microsoft documents for some hardware. You can also use Windows+Shift+S, which does not depend on a dedicated Print Screen button. If you regularly capture screens, a full-size keyboard with a clearly labeled Print Screen key can make the shortcut easier to find.

Common problems and fixes

Problem Likely cause Fix
Nothing appears after pressing PrtScn The image went to the clipboard Open Paint or another image app and press Ctrl+V.
Windows+PrtScn does not save a file The keyboard needs its Fn layer Try Fn+Windows+PrtScn, or use Snipping Tool.
The wrong window was captured The target was not active Click the target window first, then press Alt+PrtScn.
The screenshot is overwritten A later copy operation replaced the clipboard Paste and save immediately, or use Windows+PrtScn.
The overlay does not open Shortcut interception, policy, or a stalled Snipping Tool Open Snipping Tool from Start, save pending work, then restart the app or Windows.
A menu closes before capture The menu loses focus Use Snipping Tool’s delay option and open the menu during the countdown.
The image includes too much content Full-screen mode was used Use rectangular snip or active-window capture.
Multiple monitors produce an unexpected image PrtScn captures the visible desktop layout Use a window or region snip, or select the intended display in Snipping Tool.

Quality, privacy, and reliability checklist

  • Close or minimize private messages, passwords, tokens, and personal information before capturing.
  • Use active-window or region capture to avoid exposing unrelated windows.
  • Check the saved image at 100% zoom for clipped text and menus.
  • Use PNG for text and UI screenshots; keep the original before compressing or annotating.
  • For reproducible bug reports, record the application name, Windows version, and steps that produced the screen.
  • For temporary UI such as menus and tooltips, use a delay capture.

Or skip the browser setup

These shortcuts capture your local PC. If you need a repeatable screenshot of a public web page from code, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

FAQ

What is the fastest PC screenshot shortcut?

Use Windows+PrtScn when you want a saved full-screen file, or PrtScn when you plan to paste it.

How do I screenshot only one monitor?

Use Windows+Shift+S and select the monitor area, or capture the relevant window.

Can I screenshot a scrolling web page with these shortcuts?

These shortcuts capture the visible desktop area. A browser’s full-page feature or a web screenshot API is better for content that extends below the viewport.

Why is my screenshot black?

Some protected video and remote-display surfaces prevent ordinary screen capture. Try capturing surrounding UI, use the application’s own export function, or check its capture policy.
