How to Screenshot a Selected Area in Windows

Capture part of your Windows screen with Windows + Shift + S, choose a snip mode, then edit, save, copy or share it.

Press Windows + Shift + S. When the screen dims, choose Rectangular snip for a box-shaped selection or Freeform snip for an irregular outline. Drag around the area and release. Windows copies the image to your clipboard and shows a notification; select that notification to open Snipping Tool for editing, saving or sharing.

1. Capture a selected area with the Windows shortcut

  1. Arrange the screen so the content you need is visible.
  2. Press Windows + Shift + S.
  3. Choose a snipping mode from the overlay:
    • Rectangular snip: drag a box around the area.
    • Freeform snip: draw an irregular outline around the area.
    • Window snip: capture one application window.
    • Full-screen snip: capture every visible display.
  4. Click and drag over the target area, then release the mouse button.
  5. Paste immediately with Ctrl + V, or select the notification to open the capture in Snipping Tool.

The shortcut creates a clipboard-first capture. It does not automatically place a file in your Pictures folder.

2. Pick the right capture mode

Mode Best for How the boundary is defined
Rectangular Documents, diagrams, browser sections and clean crops A rectangle you drag
Freeform Irregular objects or areas around a person or product A hand-drawn outline
Window One app without manually tracing its edges A detected application window
Full screen Everything visible across the display The complete screen

Use rectangular mode when you need predictable dimensions. Freeform mode is useful when the subject is not rectangular, but the resulting image may have an uneven edge.

3. Edit, save, copy and share the snip

Select the notification that appears after capture to open the image in Snipping Tool. Its editing actions include:

  • Pen and highlighter annotations
  • Shapes
  • Eraser
  • Crop
  • Text actions

Save the image with Save as Image or press Ctrl + S. Press Ctrl + C to copy it again, then paste into email, chat, documents or an image editor. Use Share in Snipping Tool when you want to send the captured file through an available Windows sharing option.

4. Other ways to open Windows capture tools

Open Snipping Tool from Start

  1. Open Start and search for Snipping Tool.
  2. Open the app and select New.
  3. Choose a mode, select the area, then edit or save the result.

Use Print Screen for a full screen

PrtSc copies the full screen to the clipboard. It is useful when you want everything visible, but it is not the selected-area shortcut. Alt + PrtSc copies only the active window.

5. Keyboard and accessibility workflow

For keyboard navigation, press Windows + Shift + S, then press Tab until the snipping-mode menu is selected. Press Enter, use the arrow keys to choose a mode, and define the area with the mouse and keyboard. After capture, Windows can announce that the screenshot was copied to the clipboard. Open it in Snipping Tool or paste it into another app and save with Ctrl + S.

6. Troubleshooting common problems

Problem Likely cause Fix
Nothing happens after the shortcut The keys were pressed in the wrong order, or the overlay is behind another interaction Press all three keys together, wait for the screen to dim, and try again. You can also open Snipping Tool from Start.
The screenshot is missing The capture was copied to the clipboard rather than saved as a file Paste with Ctrl + V, or select the notification and use Save as Image.
No notification appears Notifications may be disabled or the notification disappeared Paste directly into an image-capable app. The capture can still be in the clipboard even when no toast is visible.
The wrong window was captured Window mode selected a different visible window Use rectangular mode and drag the exact area, or bring the desired window to the front before using Window snip.
The crop is too tight The drag ended before the full subject was inside the selection Repeat the shortcut and leave a small margin around the subject; crop precisely in Snipping Tool afterward.
Annotations are hard to undo The wrong tool is active Choose Eraser for individual marks, or recapture before adding annotations if the markup is extensive.

7. Reliability and workflow tips

  • Keep the target content visible before opening the overlay; menus and hover states can change when focus moves.
  • For repeatable documentation, use the same window size and rectangular boundaries.
  • Paste immediately when you only need to send the image; save a file when you need a durable copy.
  • For long web pages, a screen selection captures only what is currently visible. Scroll and capture additional sections, or use a webpage capture tool designed for full-page output.

8. Or skip the browser setup

If what you need is a screenshot of a webpage rather than your physical Windows screen, ScreenshotNeo returns a clean image or PDF from one GET request. It accepts the cookie or consent banner before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
