How to Take Screenshots With Gyazo
Learn how to capture desktop regions, browser pages, full pages, and shareable links with Gyazo on Windows, Mac, Linux, and mobile.
To take a screenshot with Gyazo, open the Gyazo desktop app, start a capture from its tray, taskbar, menu-bar, or dock icon (or use a shortcut), drag across the area you want, and release. Gyazo uploads the image automatically. By default, it opens the capture in your browser and copies the capture URL to your clipboard, so you can paste it into a chat, email, document, or ticket.
Choose the right Gyazo capture method
| What you need | Use | What it captures |
|---|---|---|
| A region of any application | Gyazo desktop app | A rectangle you select on your screen |
| A browser element or page | Gyazo browser extension | An HTML element, selected area, visible page, or whole scrolling page |
| A moving picture | Gyazo Video or Replay where available | Video or replay clips; the browser extension is for still images |
| A phone or tablet screen | Gyazo mobile app | Mobile captures, subject to the current mobile app’s capabilities |
Install and open Gyazo
- Download Gyazo from its official download page.
- On Windows, run the installer and launch Gyazo from the desktop or taskbar. On Mac, run the package installer and launch Gyazo from the menu bar or Dock.
- Keep the app running when you want to use its shortcut or tray/menu-bar capture control.
- For browser-only captures, install the Gyazo extension for a supported browser. Gyazo documents extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge.
Gyazo also lists mobile apps and an open-source Linux version. Gyazo says Linux is not technically supported, and Video and Replay are unavailable there. Check Gyazo’s current system-requirements information before standardizing a platform-specific workflow.
Take a desktop screenshot
- Click the Gyazo icon in the Windows system tray or taskbar, or the Mac menu bar or Dock.
- Move the pointer to one corner of the area you want to capture.
- Press and hold the mouse button or trackpad, then drag over the region.
- Release to capture. Gyazo uploads the image and creates a unique capture URL.
- Wait for the capture page to open and paste the copied URL where you need to share it.
The desktop app can capture content from other applications as well as browsers. It captures the selected screen region, so menus, dialogs, desktop windows, and content outside a browser are included when they fall inside your selection.
Capture a webpage with the browser extension
Install the Gyazo extension, open the page, and select the capture mode you need:
- Element: select a particular HTML element on the page.
- Selection: drag over a rectangular region in the browser.
- Visible page: capture what is currently visible in the browser viewport.
- Whole page: capture the page from top to bottom, including content below the initial viewport.
Whole-page capture combines the scrolling page into one still image. It is useful for documentation, bug reports, and design review when the page is taller than the screen.
The extension is for still screenshots. Gyazo’s documentation says it does not support Gyazo Video or Replay; use the relevant desktop feature where it is available instead.
Use keyboard shortcuts
Gyazo desktop shortcuts can start a capture without opening the tray or menu-bar control. If you use the Chrome extension, configure its shortcut in the browser’s extension-shortcuts settings. After launching the extension capture flow, Gyazo documents these mode keys:
- E: select an element.
- S: select an area.
- P: capture the visible page.
- W: capture the whole page.
Shortcut assignments can vary by operating system and by your existing application shortcuts. Change the browser shortcut if it conflicts with another extension or command.
Share and embed a Gyazo capture
- Finish the capture and let Gyazo upload it.
- Open the capture page that Gyazo launches, or paste the URL copied to your clipboard.
- Share the URL in your chat, issue tracker, email, or document.
Gyazo also documents Markdown and HTML embed options. Use the format supported by the destination. The default browser-tab and clipboard behavior can be changed in Gyazo settings; on Windows, Gyazo documents an option to prevent opening a new tab after capture.
Uploads remain on Gyazo’s servers and are available through their URLs without requiring an upgrade. Access to older captures from the Captures page has separate restrictions on free accounts, so keep important links and review the account rules that apply to your plan.
Make captures easier to review
- Select tightly around the subject so the shared image has less unrelated desktop content.
- Use the browser extension’s element mode when a single component is more useful than a full viewport.
- Use whole-page mode for long documentation or landing pages rather than stitching multiple desktop selections.
- Use the visible-page mode when browser chrome, scroll position, or a specific viewport state is part of the evidence.
- Before sharing sensitive content, check the selected rectangle and the resulting capture page. The desktop app uploads the selected screen region.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The Gyazo icon is missing | The app is not running or its tray/menu-bar icon is hidden. | Launch Gyazo from the installed app, then check the operating system’s tray or menu-bar settings. |
| The shortcut does nothing | The shortcut conflicts with another application or was changed. | Open Gyazo shortcut settings, or configure the browser extension shortcut in the browser’s extension-shortcuts page. |
| The capture page does not open | Browser-tab opening was disabled or the upload has not completed. | Check Gyazo settings, wait for the upload, and look for the URL in the clipboard or capture history. |
| The URL was not copied | Clipboard behavior was changed or another application replaced the clipboard contents. | Open the capture page and copy its URL manually; then review Gyazo’s sharing settings. |
| Only part of a long page appears | You used a desktop selection or visible-page mode. | Use the browser extension’s whole-page mode. |
| An HTML element cannot be selected | The extension is not installed, disabled, or the page blocks the selection flow. | Enable the extension for the site, reload the page, and use selection mode as a fallback. |
| Video or Replay controls are unavailable | The browser extension or Linux build does not provide those features. | Use the supported desktop app and operating system for Video or Replay; the extension remains a still-image tool. |
| Linux behaves differently | Gyazo lists Linux as open source but does not provide technical support. | Verify the current Linux project documentation, or use a supported Windows, Mac, mobile, or browser-extension workflow. |
| A capture contains private information | The selected screen region included unrelated windows, notifications, or credentials. | Cancel and recapture a smaller region, close sensitive windows, and inspect the uploaded image before sharing. |
Performance, reliability, and account considerations
Performance
Desktop capture is usually the shortest path for a small region because it records the pixels already on your screen. Whole-page browser capture takes longer on pages with substantial content because the extension must process the scrolling page into one image. Upload time depends on image size and network conditions.
Reliability
A desktop selection works across applications, while extension modes depend on a supported browser and the page’s rendering behavior. For repeatable documentation, choose one mode and keep the browser viewport and zoom consistent. If a page changes while a whole-page capture is being assembled, recapture after it settles.
Cost and retention
The documented workflow uploads captures to Gyazo and makes them available by URL. Gyazo documents additional Pro features such as easier access to captures, image editing, longer video and replay clips, ad-free browsing, and passwords on capture pages. Confirm current plan limits and retention rules before using Gyazo for long-term records.
Or skip the browser setup
If your application needs automated website screenshots instead of manual desktop captures, ScreenshotNeo provides a GET API and MCP server. One request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options. A minimal request looks like this:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo includes full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-element capture, dark mode, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, PDFs with paper size and margins, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs, webhooks, bulk capture, usage data, and an OpenAPI specification. It accepts parameter names used by other screenshot APIs to make migration easier.
Create a free ScreenshotNeo account for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
