How to Make Greenshot the Default Screen Capture Tool
Set Greenshot to the Print Screen key on Windows 10 or 11, stop Snipping Tool conflicts, launch it at startup, and fix reserved hotkeys.
To make Greenshot your default screen capture tool on Windows: install and launch Greenshot, assign Print Screen to Capture region in Greenshot Preferences, disable Windows 11’s “Use the Print screen key to open screen capture” setting, and enable Greenshot at startup.
After setup, pressing Print Screen opens Greenshot’s region selector. Greenshot also supports window, fullscreen, and last-region shortcuts, plus destinations such as its editor, a file, the clipboard, a printer, email, or a destination picker.
1. Install and start Greenshot
- Install Greenshot from the official Greenshot project.
- Launch Greenshot.
- Look for the green Greenshot icon in the Windows notification area. If the icon is missing, Greenshot is not running and its hotkeys cannot work.
Greenshot is designed to start automatically with Windows. You can also enable this explicitly in its General settings.
2. Assign Print Screen to Greenshot
- Right-click the Greenshot notification-area icon.
- Open Preferences.
- Select the Hotkeys tab.
- Find Capture region.
- Click its shortcut field and press Print Screen.
- Save or apply the change.
Greenshot’s default hotkey configuration uses these capture modes:
| Shortcut | Capture mode | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Print Screen | Region capture | Select any rectangle on the screen |
| Alt + Print Screen | Window capture | Capture one application window |
| Ctrl + Print Screen | Fullscreen capture | Capture the entire display |
| Shift + Print Screen | Last-region capture | Repeat the previous selection |
If you want another mode to be the default, assign Print Screen to that mode instead. For example, assign it to fullscreen capture when every press should capture the complete display.
3. Stop Windows 11 Snipping Tool from taking the key
Windows 11 can reserve Print Screen for Snipping Tool. Greenshot’s FAQ documents this conflict.
- Open the Windows Start menu.
- Search for open screen.
- Select Use the Print screen key to open screen capture.
- Turn the setting off.
- Restart Greenshot.
Press Print Screen in a normal desktop application. The Greenshot region selector should appear. If Snipping Tool still opens, sign out or restart Windows after changing the setting, then confirm that Greenshot is running.
4. Make Greenshot available after every reboot
- Open Greenshot Preferences.
- In General, enable Launch Greenshot on startup.
- Apply the setting and restart Windows once to verify it.
The Greenshot help describes this option as starting the program when Windows has booted. Startup matters because a hotkey cannot be handled while Greenshot is closed.
5. Choose what happens after a capture
Greenshot can send a capture directly to different destinations. Select the preferred destination in Greenshot’s settings or use the destination picker after each capture.
- Image editor: annotate, draw shapes, highlight, obfuscate sensitive information, crop, and export.
- File: save screenshots to a configured folder.
- Clipboard: paste the capture immediately into another application.
- Printer: print the result.
- Email: attach or send the capture through the configured mail workflow.
- Destination picker: choose the destination for each screenshot.
6. Use a different hotkey when Print Screen is reserved
OneDrive and Dropbox can reserve Print Screen for automatic screenshot saving. Disable their screenshot feature or assign Greenshot an unused combination such as Ctrl + Alt + G.
For Windows-key combinations, Greenshot’s configuration file may be easier than the preferences dialog:
- Exit Greenshot completely from the notification area.
- Open its configuration file.
- Change the relevant hotkey field.
- Save the file and restart Greenshot.
RegionHotkey=Win + P
Greenshot notes that some special keys are handled differently by Windows and cannot be entered directly in the hotkey configuration panel. Always exit Greenshot before editing its configuration so it does not overwrite your change on shutdown.
7. Test the complete setup
- Confirm the green Greenshot icon is visible.
- Press Print Screen and verify that the region selector appears.
- Press Alt + Print Screen over a window and verify window capture.
- Press Ctrl + Print Screen and verify fullscreen capture.
- Open the Greenshot editor and confirm annotations and obfuscation are available.
- Restart Windows and test Print Screen again.
Why Print Screen may still open the wrong tool
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Snipping Tool opens | Windows 11 Print Screen integration is enabled | Turn off “Use the Print screen key to open screen capture,” then restart Greenshot |
| Nothing happens | Greenshot is not running | Launch Greenshot and confirm its notification-area icon |
| Print Screen saves to OneDrive | OneDrive screenshot capture has reserved the key | Disable that feature or choose another Greenshot hotkey |
| Print Screen saves to Dropbox | Dropbox screenshot capture has reserved the key | Disable that feature or choose another Greenshot hotkey |
| The shortcut cannot be entered | Windows handles the key specially | Edit the configuration file while Greenshot is closed, then restart it |
| It works until reboot | Greenshot is not configured for startup | Enable “Launch Greenshot on startup” in General settings |
| The wrong capture type starts | Print Screen is assigned to another Greenshot mode | Reassign it in Preferences > Hotkeys |
Performance, reliability, and storage considerations
- Hotkey reliability: Keep only one application responsible for Print Screen. Multiple screenshot utilities competing for the same key create inconsistent results.
- Startup reliability: Enable Greenshot at startup and verify the notification-area icon after a reboot.
- Capture speed: Region and window captures avoid the extra steps of opening Snipping Tool manually and copying the result.
- Large captures: Fullscreen images and editor annotations consume more memory and disk space than small region captures. Configure a predictable save folder and image format for repeated work.
- Privacy: Use the editor’s obfuscation tool before sharing screenshots containing credentials, tokens, personal data, or private messages.
- Cost: Greenshot’s setup is local configuration. Your storage, printer, email, or cloud-sync costs depend on the destination you choose.
Or skip the browser setup: ScreenshotNeo
Greenshot is useful for interactive desktop captures. For automated website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo provides a single HTTP request that returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options. The basic request is:
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" \
-d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY \
--data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com \
-o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({
access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY',
url: 'https://stripe.com'
});
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const data = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
require('fs').writeFileSync('shot.webp', data);
ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-element capture, dark mode, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and margin settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector hiding, selector or network-idle waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting, and an OpenAPI specification. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
