How to Make Snagit the Default Screen Capture Tool
Set Snagit to open from Print Screen on Windows or a custom shortcut on Mac, fix conflicts with Snipping Tool, OneDrive, and Dropbox.
Short answer: make Snagit the app assigned to your normal screenshot shortcut. On Windows, Snagit uses Print Screen as its default global capture hotkey. On Mac, the default is Control+Shift+C. If another app owns the key, release it first.
“Default” here means the shortcut starts Snagit. It does not change every image-file association in Windows or macOS. The capture type, selection mode, effects, preview, and destination still come from Snagit’s current Capture Window settings.
Windows: assign Print Screen to Snagit
- Start Snagit and open the Capture Window.
- Under the red Capture button, find the shortcut field.
- Confirm that it says Print Screen. If it does not, click the field and press the Print Screen key.
- Choose the Image tab and configure the selection, effects, and share or save destination you want.
- Press Print Screen. Snagit should start a capture with those selected settings.
TechSmith describes the global capture hotkey this way: the Print Screen key starts a capture using the settings currently selected in the Capture Window. That means changing the key alone does not force image capture, full-screen capture, editor preview, or a particular output destination.
Choose what Print Screen does
Before testing the shortcut, review the Capture Window:
| Setting | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Image or Video tab | Whether Print Screen starts an image or video capture. |
| Selection | Region, window, full screen, or another available selection method. |
| Effects | Visual additions applied during capture. |
| Share or destination | Whether the result opens in the Editor, saves, or is sent to another destination. |
Windows 11: stop Snipping Tool from taking Print Screen
Windows 11 can reserve Print Screen for Snipping Tool. When that setting is enabled, pressing the key may open Snipping Tool instead of Snagit.
- Open Windows Settings.
- Select Accessibility.
- Select Keyboard.
- Scroll to the Print screen section.
- Turn off Use the Print screen key to open Snipping Tool.
- Return to Snagit and test Print Screen again.
TechSmith identifies Snagit 2023.2.1 as containing a fix for this Windows 11 conflict. If you use an older Snagit release, update it before troubleshooting further.
Windows: check OneDrive, Dropbox, and other hotkey owners
Cloud-sync utilities and capture tools can claim Print Screen before Snagit receives it. TechSmith specifically lists OneDrive and Dropbox as applications that may override the key.
Use this order when Print Screen still does nothing:
- Quit or temporarily disable other screenshot utilities.
- Check OneDrive and Dropbox settings for screenshot capture or automatic screenshot saving.
- Open Snagit’s File > Capture Preferences > Hotkeys and verify the assigned key.
- Restart Snagit after changing the competing application’s setting.
- Test the key in a simple window before trying a browser, game, or elevated application.
Use a preset when you need repeatable captures
The global hotkey uses the settings currently selected in the Capture Window. A preset is better when a workflow must remain fixed, such as “capture a region, open the Editor, and send to a particular destination.”
Assign a separate hotkey to the preset if you want a dedicated workflow. Snagit’s OneClick action uses its own default capture settings rather than whatever is currently selected in the Capture Window, so compare these before choosing a shortcut:
| Approach | Best for | Behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Global Print Screen hotkey | General daily captures | Uses the current Capture Window settings. |
| Preset hotkey | Repeatable documentation or support workflows | Uses the preset’s fixed settings. |
| OneClick | Quick access to a known capture action | Uses its own default capture settings. |
Mac: use or change Snagit’s global shortcut
On Mac, Snagit’s default global capture shortcut is Control+Shift+C.
- Open Snagit Editor.
- Choose Snagit > Settings.
- Open the Keyboard section.
- Click the shortcut you want to edit.
- Press the new key combination.
Snagit saves Mac shortcut changes automatically. Pick a combination that is not already used by macOS, a window manager, a browser extension, or another capture utility.
What “default screenshot tool” does and does not change
- It does: make a keyboard shortcut launch Snagit’s capture flow.
- It does: let you control the capture mode and destination through Snagit’s settings.
- It does not: change every screenshot file association in Windows or macOS.
- It does not: automatically switch between image and video capture.
- It does not: override an operating-system shortcut or another application that owns the same key.
Troubleshooting checklist
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Snipping Tool opens | Windows 11 owns Print Screen. | Disable “Use the Print screen key to open Snipping Tool” in Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard. |
| Nothing happens | Print Screen is not assigned in Snagit. | Set the Capture Window shortcut field to Print Screen. |
| OneDrive or Dropbox reacts | The sync utility claimed the key. | Turn off its screenshot shortcut or exit it, then verify Snagit’s hotkey. |
| Snagit captures video | The Video tab is selected. | Select the Image tab before pressing the global key. |
| The wrong area is captured | The current selection mode is different from the intended one. | Change Selection in the Capture Window or use a preset with fixed selection settings. |
| The result goes to the wrong place | The current share or save destination controls the output. | Review destination settings before testing the shortcut. |
| A Mac shortcut does not work | Another macOS app or utility uses the same combination. | Change it under Snagit > Settings > Keyboard and choose an unused combination. |
| Settings seem ignored | A preset or OneClick action is being used. | Check whether the shortcut launches the global capture, a preset, or OneClick; each can use different settings. |
Performance and reliability considerations
- Keep the Capture Window configured before you start a repetitive task; the global key follows those current settings.
- Use a preset for consistent output across a team or documentation process.
- Reduce conflicts by assigning unique shortcuts to capture utilities, cloud-sync tools, and window managers.
- Test Print Screen after operating-system updates because Windows can restore or change the Snipping Tool assignment.
- For browser pages that require a clean, repeatable image without local browser setup, an API can separate capture from the desktop hotkey workflow.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a clean website image rather than a desktop hotkey, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. It accepts a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the full option list, including full-page and element capture, device presets, retina scale, dark mode, custom CSS and JavaScript, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, geolocation, caching, signed links, async jobs, bulk capture, and PDF settings.

ScreenshotNeo also includes an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
FAQ
Can I make Snagit open whenever I press any screenshot key?
You can assign a key combination Snagit supports as its global capture hotkey. The operating system and other utilities must leave that combination available.
Does changing Print Screen make Snagit the Windows screenshot app?
It makes Print Screen launch Snagit. It does not change every screenshot association or prevent other apps from offering their own capture commands.
Should I use a preset or the global hotkey?
Use the global hotkey for changing, everyday capture settings. Use a preset when the selection, output, and destination must stay fixed.
Why does my preset behave differently from Print Screen?
The global key uses the current Capture Window settings, while a preset uses its saved settings. OneClick also uses its own default capture settings.
What is the Mac default shortcut?
Snagit’s default Mac global shortcut is Control+Shift+C. Change it in Snagit Editor under Snagit > Settings > Keyboard.
