Microsoft Edge Screenshot Shortcuts: How to Capture Your Screen

Use Ctrl+Shift+S in Edge for webpage screenshots, full-page captures, selected areas, and Windows Snipping Tool shortcuts.

Microsoft Edge’s webpage screenshot shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+S on supported desktop installations. It opens Edge Screenshot, formerly called Web Capture. From there, choose a selected-area capture or a full-page capture, then mark up, copy, or save the result.

For the entire Windows desktop or another application, use Windows+Shift+S to open Snipping Tool. This guide covers both workflows, platform limits, troubleshooting, and an API option when you need repeatable captures in code.

1. Microsoft Edge screenshot shortcuts at a glance

Task Shortcut or action What it captures
Screenshot a webpage in Edge Ctrl+Shift+S Selected area or the complete webpage, including content below the fold
Open Edge Screenshot without a shortcut Right-click the page and choose Screenshot, or open the Settings and more menu Webpage content
Capture part of the Windows screen Windows+Shift+S Rectangle, window, full-screen, or freeform region in Snipping Tool
Capture the whole Windows screen Print Screen Static full-screen image copied to the clipboard
Record a region on Windows Windows+Shift+R Video of a selected screen region in Snipping Tool

2. Capture an entire webpage in Microsoft Edge

  1. Open the page in Microsoft Edge.
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+S. You can also right-click the page and select Screenshot, or open Edge’s Settings and more menu and choose Screenshot.
  3. Choose the full-page option. Edge scrolls through the page and includes content below the visible viewport.
  4. Review the capture in the overlay.
  5. Use the pen or touch tools if you need annotations.
  6. Copy the image to the clipboard or save it to a file.

Full-page capture is useful for documentation, bug reports, design reviews, and archiving a page that is longer than one screen. Microsoft describes Screenshot as able to capture long or moving webpages.

Pages with lazy-loaded content

Some pages load images, cards, or comments only after you scroll. Let Edge finish loading the page before starting the capture. If content still does not appear, scroll through the page once, wait for network activity to settle, and run Screenshot again. A page that changes while it is being captured can produce a result that differs from the initial view.

3. Capture a selected area of a webpage

  1. Open the page in Edge.
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+S, or open Screenshot from the context or Settings and more menu.
  3. Choose the selected-area option.
  4. Drag around the content you want to keep.
  5. Mark up, copy, or save the resulting image.

This mode is best when you need one chart, a paragraph, a product card, or a portion of a page without capturing the rest of the document.

4. Capture the desktop, an app window, or a freeform region on Windows

Edge Screenshot is webpage-specific. Use Windows Snipping Tool when the target is outside the browser.

  1. Press Windows+Shift+S.
  2. Choose rectangle, window, full-screen, or freeform mode.
  3. Select the area or window.
  4. Use the notification or Snipping Tool editor to annotate, crop, copy, or save the image.

Press Print Screen for a static full-screen snapshot copied to the clipboard. To record a region as video, press Windows+Shift+R, select the area, start recording, and stop when finished.

When Snipping Tool is the better choice

  • You need the desktop, a non-browser application, or a single window.
  • You need a freeform selection rather than a webpage rectangle.
  • You need video instead of a still image.
  • You need editor features such as annotation, cropping, OCR text extraction, or quick redaction of recognized email addresses or phone numbers.

5. Edge Screenshot on macOS, Android, and iOS

Microsoft’s policy documentation lists Screenshot support for Edge version 87 or later on Windows and macOS. It marks Android and iOS as unsupported for this policy feature. Functionality can vary by device type, market, and browser version.

Microsoft’s reviewed keyboard reference does not provide a separate Mac Screenshot shortcut. Avoid assuming that the Windows Ctrl+Shift+S combination has a Mac equivalent. On macOS, use the Screenshot entry in Edge’s menus when it is available, or use the operating system’s own screenshot shortcuts.

6. Why Ctrl+Shift+S does not work in Edge

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Nothing opens Screenshot is disabled by an administrator policy Ask the administrator to check the WebCaptureEnabled policy. When disabled, the context-menu item, menu item, and shortcut are unavailable.
The shortcut is ignored The browser is not focused, another app has captured the key combination, or the installation is too old Click the page first, try the context-menu Screenshot command, and update Edge. Microsoft lists version 87 or later for Windows and macOS policy support.
Screenshot is missing from the right-click menu Policy restriction, browser version, or device support limitation Check WebCaptureEnabled, update Edge, and verify that you are on a supported desktop platform.
The full-page result is incomplete Lazy-loaded elements, content that changes during capture, or a page that has not finished loading Wait for the page to settle, scroll through it once to trigger deferred content, then capture again.
The capture contains a login or consent prompt The page requires an authenticated session or interaction before the content is available Complete the required interaction in Edge before capturing. For automated workflows, use a screenshot API that supports cookies, headers, and scripted actions.
The wrong screen is captured Snipping Tool was used when the goal was a webpage, or Edge Screenshot was used when the goal was the desktop Use Edge Screenshot for webpage content and Windows Snipping Tool for the desktop or another application.

7. Choosing the right capture method

Need Best fit Reason
One visible browser region Edge Screenshot selected area Quick selection with copy and save options
A page longer than the viewport Edge Screenshot full page Captures content below the fold
A desktop or app window Windows Snipping Tool Works outside the browser
A freeform shape Windows Snipping Tool freeform mode Supports non-rectangular selections
A short screen recording Windows Snipping Tool video capture Uses Windows+Shift+R
Repeatable captures in a script or service ScreenshotNeo One HTTP request, configurable browser behavior, and billing that excludes failed captures

8. Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots in a build, monitoring job, documentation pipeline, or AI workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the complete parameter reference. These examples use the required API format:

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const buffer = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
require('fs').writeFileSync('shot.webp', buffer);

Useful ScreenshotNeo options

ScreenshotNeo supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets, arbitrary viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size and margins, landscape mode and page ranges, HTML/CSS to image, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicking an element before capture, hiding selectors, waiting for a selector or delay or network idle, blocking ads, trackers, requests or resource types, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, configurable caching TTL, signed public image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification.

It also accepts parameter names used by other screenshot APIs, which can reduce changes when switching. Consent banners are accepted before capture and more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can be removed; each cleanup step can be turned off.

Reliability, billing, and cost

  • Only clean shots are billed.
  • Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing.
  • Each response reports the result through X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
  • The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing gives two months free.
  • An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

For a capture service, set an explicit timeout in your client, keep the original response headers for billing diagnostics, and use caching when the page does not need a fresh render on every request.

Sign up free for ScreenshotNeo and get 1,000 screenshots a month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

9. Performance and reliability checklist

  • Choose full-page Edge capture only when content below the fold is required.
  • Wait for fonts, images, and client-rendered content before capturing.
  • For changing pages, capture at a consistent state and time.
  • Use Snipping Tool for a quick desktop image; use an API for repeatable automation.
  • For automated captures, configure waits, cookies, headers, viewport, timezone, and geolocation to match the target page.
  • Inspect ScreenshotNeo’s X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers when diagnosing a response.

10. FAQ

What is the main Microsoft Edge screenshot shortcut?

On supported desktop Edge installations, press Ctrl+Shift+S.

Can Edge capture an entire webpage?

Yes. Choose the full-page option in Screenshot to capture content below the visible viewport.

Is Ctrl+Shift+S the same as Windows+Shift+S?

No. Ctrl+Shift+S opens Edge’s webpage Screenshot. Windows+Shift+S opens Windows Snipping Tool for screen regions, windows, or the full screen.

Can an administrator disable Edge Screenshot?

Yes. The WebCaptureEnabled policy controls access. If it is disabled, the menu commands and shortcut are unavailable.

Does Microsoft document a dedicated Mac shortcut?

The reviewed Microsoft keyboard reference does not provide a separate Mac Screenshot key combination. Use Edge’s menu when available and avoid assuming the Windows shortcut maps directly.

When should I use an API instead of Edge?

Use an API when captures must run repeatedly, from code, in CI, across many URLs, or with controlled cookies, headers, waits, devices, and output formats.
