What Is the Microsoft Shortcut for Taking a Screenshot?
Use Windows + Shift + S for a selected area, Windows + PrtScn to save the full screen, or Alt + PrtScn for the active window.
The main Microsoft shortcut for taking a screenshot is Windows logo key + Shift + S. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, it opens the Snipping Tool overlay so you can select a region. The capture is copied to the clipboard and can be opened in Snipping Tool for editing, saving, and sharing.
Use a different shortcut when you need the whole screen saved automatically, the active window only, or a full-screen image ready to paste.
| Shortcut | What it captures | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Windows + Shift + S | A selected region, window, free-form shape, or full screen through Snipping Tool | Clipboard; Snipping Tool opens for editing and saving |
| Windows + PrtScn | The entire screen | Automatically saved in Pictures\Screenshots |
| Alt + PrtScn | The active window | Clipboard |
| PrtScn | The entire screen | Clipboard; on some systems the key is configured to open screen snipping |
Windows + Shift + S: the shortcut for a selected area
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- When the screen dims, choose a capture mode from the Snipping Tool toolbar.
- Drag over the area you want, or select a window or full-screen mode.
- The screenshot is copied to the clipboard. Select the notification to open it in Snipping Tool.
- Edit, save, copy, or share the image from Snipping Tool.
This is the best default shortcut when you need only part of a page, an application, or a monitor. Microsoft documents that the capture is automatically copied to the clipboard.
Snipping Tool capture modes
- Rectangular snip: drag a rectangle around the exact area.
- Free-form snip: draw an irregular outline.
- Window snip: select one application window.
- Full-screen snip: capture every visible display.
Windows + PrtScn: save the full screen automatically
Press Windows + PrtScn to capture the entire screen and save it automatically. Open File Explorer and go to Pictures\Screenshots. On a system using OneDrive backup, the Pictures folder may be redirected into OneDrive, so check the corresponding OneDrive Pictures folder if the file is not in the local path.
The screen may briefly dim when the capture succeeds. This shortcut is useful for repeated full-screen captures because it does not require you to paste into another application.
Alt + PrtScn: capture only the active window
- Click the window you want to capture so it is active.
- Press Alt + PrtScn.
- Open Paint, Word, an image editor, or another application and press Ctrl + V.
- Save the pasted image in the format and location you need.
This captures the active window rather than the whole desktop. It is useful when several applications or monitors are visible and you want to exclude them.
PrtScn by itself: full screen to the clipboard
Press PrtScn to copy the whole screen to the clipboard, then paste it with Ctrl + V. Microsoft notes that Windows can be configured so this key opens screen snipping instead. If pressing it does not copy an image, check the keyboard accessibility settings and the Snipping Tool configuration.
What if your keyboard has no PrtScn key?
Some compact laptops and keyboards combine Print Screen with another key. Try Fn + Windows + Space, a Microsoft-documented hardware-dependent alternative. You may also need to hold Fn while pressing a key labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Screen. The exact combination depends on the keyboard manufacturer.
If the keyboard has no screenshot function at all, use Windows + Shift + S with the on-screen Snipping Tool controls, or connect an external keyboard.
Clipboard versus an automatically saved file
| Your goal | Use |
|---|---|
| Select part of the screen and edit it immediately | Windows + Shift + S |
| Save the entire screen without pasting | Windows + PrtScn |
| Capture one application window | Alt + PrtScn |
| Paste a full-screen image into another app | PrtScn, then Ctrl + V |
Common problems and fixes
Nothing appears after using a clipboard shortcut
Clipboard shortcuts do not necessarily create a file. Open an image editor or document and press Ctrl + V. If nothing pastes, try the shortcut again and make sure another application has not replaced the clipboard contents.
Windows + PrtScn does not save a file
Check Pictures\Screenshots, including the OneDrive version of that folder. If the keyboard requires a function layer, hold Fn as well. You can always use Snipping Tool and choose Save manually.
The wrong window was captured
For Alt + PrtScn, the target must be the active window. Click its title bar first. For a more deliberate selection, use Windows + Shift + S and choose window snip.
The shortcut opens a tool instead of copying an image
Windows settings can assign PrtScn to open screen snipping. Use the overlay intentionally, or review the Snipping Tool keyboard setting if you need the older clipboard behavior.
A screenshot includes private notifications or another monitor
Use rectangular snip or window snip instead of full-screen capture. Before capturing, close notifications and move sensitive windows out of view. Full-screen shortcuts capture what is visible across the configured display area.
The image looks blurry
A screenshot records the pixels currently rendered on screen. Increase display scaling or application zoom only when it improves readability, and avoid enlarging a small screenshot after capture. For a web page, a browser-based capture can render a chosen viewport and pixel scale instead.
When a desktop shortcut is not the right tool
These shortcuts capture your local display. They do not automatically capture a complete web page below the fold, wait for lazy-loaded images, remove cookie banners, or produce a repeatable image from a URL. For automated website screenshots, use a browser automation script or an API.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request captures a URL as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It can load lazy images, capture a CSS-selected element, set a viewport or device preset, use dark mode and retina scale, wait for a selector, delay, or network idle, and apply custom headers, cookies, JavaScript, or CSS.
Before the capture, cookie and consent banners are accepted and removed along with more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options.

Performance, reliability, and cost notes
- Desktop shortcuts: they are immediate and require no network connection, but the result depends on what is visible and rendered on your screen.
- Clipboard workflow: paste or save promptly if another application may overwrite the clipboard.
- Automated web captures: set an explicit wait condition for dynamic pages, use caching with a TTL when the page does not change often, and use bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call.
- Cost control: ScreenshotNeo bills only clean shots. Cache hits and failed, blank, timed-out, or bot-blocked pages cost nothing.
