Print Screen Commands for Capturing Screenshots
Find the right screenshot shortcut for Windows, Mac, Chromebook, Android, or iPhone—and learn where each capture is saved.
Windows: press Windows + Shift + S to choose a region, window, or full screen. Press Print Screen (PrtSc) to copy the entire screen to the clipboard. The correct command depends on your operating system and whether you want the full screen, a window, or a selected area.
| Device | Full screen | Selected area or window | Default destination |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 10/11 | Print Screen | Windows + Shift + S | Clipboard for Print Screen; Snipping Tool can save captures |
| Mac | Shift + Command + 3 | Shift + Command + 4 | Desktop |
| Chromebook | Ctrl + Show windows | Shift + Ctrl + Show windows | Downloads |
| Android | Power + Volume Down | Use the screenshot toolbar or Capture more when available | Google Photos or Gallery |
| iPhone | Side + Volume Up on Face ID models | Crop the screenshot after capture | Photos |
Windows 10 and Windows 11 commands
Capture a region, window, or full screen
Press Windows + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool overlay. Select the capture mode offered by your version: rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip, or full-screen snip. The result opens in Snipping Tool, where you can annotate, save, or share it.
Copy the entire screen
Press Print Screen, also labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn. Microsoft describes this as a static image of the entire screen placed in the clipboard. Open Paint, Word, an email, or another image-capable app and press Ctrl + V to paste it.
Save a screenshot as a file
Use the Snipping Tool’s Save button or Save As command after a capture. Windows can also automatically save Snipping Tool captures to the Screenshots folder; the automatic-save behavior and destination can be changed in Snipping Tool settings. A bare Print Screen press still follows the clipboard path unless your keyboard settings have been changed.
Record a video clip
Press Windows + Shift + R to open the Snipping Tool video-snipping interface. This records a clip rather than creating a still screenshot.
Keyboards without Print Screen
If the key is missing, Microsoft lists Fn + Windows + Space Bar as an alternative on some hardware. Laptop manufacturers can assign different function-layer behavior, so check the keyboard legend and Snipping Tool settings.
Mac commands
- Entire screen: press Shift + Command + 3.
- Selected area: press Shift + Command + 4, then drag around the area.
- Window or menu: press Shift + Command + 4, press Space, then click the window or menu. Hold Option while clicking to omit the window shadow.
macOS normally saves screenshots to the desktop. Click the thumbnail that appears briefly to mark up or share the image. Its options can copy the capture to the clipboard instead. Some protected applications, including Apple TV, may prevent window capture.
Chromebook commands
On a Chromebook with a dedicated Screenshot key, press it and choose full-screen, partial-screen, or window capture. On keyboards without that key:
- Full screen: Ctrl + Show windows.
- Partial screen or window: Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, then choose the area or window.
- External keyboard without Show windows: Ctrl + Shift + F5.
Captures save to Downloads by default. Open the capture settings to choose another folder. These shortcut names refer to the standard US English QWERTY layout; on some external keyboards, Windows or Command replaces the Search/Launcher key.
Android commands
On most Android phones, press Power + Volume Down together and release. If that does not work, hold the Power button for a few seconds and tap Screenshot. Button behavior varies by manufacturer.
On Android 12 and later, take a screenshot and tap Capture more to extend it down a scrollable page when the app supports scrolling capture. Find screenshots in Google Photos under Collections → On this device → Screenshots. Older devices may use a Gallery app and its Screenshots album.
iPhone commands
- Face ID models: quickly press and release Side + Volume Up.
- Home button with a Side button: quickly press and release Side + Home.
- Home button with a Top button: quickly press and release Top + Home.
The image is stored in Photos. Siri, AssistiveTouch, and Back Tap provide alternatives to the hardware combinations. The immediate review controls differ between current iOS releases and older iOS versions.
Choose the right capture mode
| Goal | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Show everything visible | Full-screen command | Includes all visible displays or the complete device screen. |
| Document one app | Window capture | Excludes unrelated windows and desktop clutter. |
| Highlight a control or error | Region or partial capture | Keeps attention on the relevant area and reduces sensitive content. |
| Capture a long page | Android Capture more or an app’s scrolling mode | Extends beyond the visible viewport when supported. |
| Show motion | Windows video snip or screen recording | A still image cannot demonstrate an interaction. |
Where your screenshot went
- Windows: if you pressed only Print Screen, paste from the clipboard with Ctrl + V. Snipping Tool captures can be saved from the editor or found in the configured Screenshots folder.
- Mac: check the desktop unless you selected a different destination in screenshot options.
- Chromebook: check Downloads or the folder selected in capture settings.
- Android: check Google Photos or Gallery, then the Screenshots album.
- iPhone: open Photos and look in the Screenshots collection.
Troubleshooting
Nothing appears after pressing Print Screen
Print Screen normally copies the image to the clipboard instead of opening a file. Paste it into Paint or another app. If you expected the Snipping Tool, use Windows + Shift + S or change the Print Screen behavior in Windows settings.
The Print Screen key is missing
Try the documented Fn + Windows + Space Bar combination, use Snipping Tool, or connect a keyboard with a dedicated Print Screen key. Laptop function layers differ by model.
The shortcut does not work on a Chromebook
Confirm that you are using the Show windows key. With an external keyboard, try Ctrl + Shift + F5. Chromebook shortcut references target standard US English QWERTY layouts, so key labels can differ elsewhere.
Android buttons do nothing
Press both buttons at the same time and release quickly. If that fails, use the Power-menu Screenshot action and consult the phone manufacturer’s instructions.
The screenshot is black or blocked
Some protected media and applications intentionally prevent capture. Try capturing a non-protected window or use the application’s own export feature.
The image contains private information
Use a region or window capture, then crop or mark out account numbers, messages, tokens, and personal data before sharing.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need screenshots of web pages in code, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, and lets each cleanup step be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and whether the shot was billed.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options. A minimal request looks like this:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Use options for full-page shots with lazy images, CSS-element capture, dark mode, device presets, custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page ranges, custom CSS or JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocked resources, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture, and usage reporting. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Create a free ScreenshotNeo account for 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
Performance, reliability, and cost notes
- For a local screenshot, the built-in shortcut is immediate and free.
- For web automation, wait for a selector, a delay, or network idle when content loads asynchronously.
- Use element capture or a selected region when a full page is unnecessary; smaller images are easier to store and share.
- Use caching with a TTL for repeated URLs. ScreenshotNeo identifies cache hits in its response and does not bill them.
- Check
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billedbefore treating a response as a successful, billable capture.
FAQ
Is Print Screen the same on every computer?
No. Print Screen is primarily a Windows key name. Mac, Chromebook, Android, and iPhone use different commands.
Does Print Screen save a file automatically?
Usually it copies the full screen to the Windows clipboard. Snipping Tool and other operating systems can save files automatically.
Can I capture a scrolling web page?
Android 12 and later support Capture more on most scrollable screens. Desktop tools and web screenshot APIs may offer their own scrolling modes.
Can an API replace a physical screenshot shortcut?
Yes, for web pages you need to capture from code or on a schedule. A local shortcut remains simplest for what is currently visible on your device.
