Screen Capture Shortcut Key in Windows 10
Use Windows 10 shortcuts to capture a region, window, or full screen, save screenshots, copy them, and fix common keyboard issues.
The most useful Windows 10 screenshot shortcut is Windows logo key + Shift + S. It opens the Snipping Tool overlay so you can select a rectangle, freeform area, window, or the full screen. The capture is copied to the clipboard.
| What you need | Shortcut | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Select part of the screen | Windows + Shift + S | Opens the Snipping Tool overlay; your selection is copied to the clipboard. |
| Save the entire screen | Windows + PrtScn | Saves a full-screen screenshot in Pictures\Screenshots. |
| Copy the entire screen | PrtScn | Copies a full-screen snapshot to the clipboard. |
| No Print Screen key | Fn + Windows + Spacebar | Microsoft’s documented hardware fallback. |
Capture a selected area with Windows + Shift + S
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- When the screen dims, choose a capture mode from the Snipping Tool toolbar.
- Drag over the area you want, or select a window or the full screen.
- The image is copied to the clipboard. Open Paint, Word, an email, or another app and press Ctrl + V to paste it.
- Select the Snipping Tool notification if you need to annotate, crop, save, or share the capture.
Snipping Tool provides four modes: freeform, rectangle, window, and full screen. Rectangle mode is usually fastest for a precise area; window mode captures one application window without manually tracing its edges.
Use a delay for menus and transient content
Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu, choose the delay control, and select one to five seconds. Microsoft documents Alt + D as the delay shortcut. A delay gives you time to open a menu, tooltip, or other content that disappears when you press a key.
Save a full-screen screenshot immediately
Press Windows + PrtScn. Windows saves the image automatically under your user profile in Pictures\Screenshots. Open File Explorer and select Pictures, then Screenshots.
If OneDrive is backing up your Pictures folder, the exact visible location can include your OneDrive folder. Search File Explorer for Screenshots if you do not see the folder in the usual location.
Copy the full screen with Print Screen
Press PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Screen, depending on the label on your keyboard. Windows places a full-screen snapshot in the clipboard; it does not necessarily create a file. Paste it with Ctrl + V into an image editor or document, then save it.
Change what the Print Screen key opens
On supported Windows 10 builds, go to Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard. Find Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. Turning this setting off changes the Print Screen key’s behavior. If your key opens the overlay when you expected a clipboard capture, check this setting first.
Use a laptop without a PrtScn key
Keyboard layouts vary. The key may be labelled PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Screen, and compact laptops may require Fn. If there is no dedicated key, Microsoft lists Fn + Windows + Spacebar as the fallback.
Some manufacturers place Print Screen on another key as a secondary function. Hold Fn while pressing that key, or consult the laptop’s keyboard diagram. The exact combination depends on the hardware.
Choose the right shortcut
| Requirement | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Capture a small region | Windows + Shift + S | You draw the exact area and receive it in the clipboard. |
| Capture one application window | Windows + Shift + S, then Window mode | Avoids manually trimming the desktop. |
| Save the whole display with one shortcut | Windows + PrtScn | Creates a file in Pictures\Screenshots. |
| Paste the whole display into another app | PrtScn | Places the image directly in the clipboard. |
| Capture a menu that closes quickly | Snipping Tool delay | Provides a one-to-five-second setup period. |
Troubleshooting Windows 10 screenshots
Nothing happens when I press Windows + Shift + S
Press all three keys together and release them. If the overlay still does not appear, open Snipping Tool from Start to confirm it is available, then check that the Windows key is not disabled by a gaming-mode utility or keyboard lock.
Print Screen opens snipping instead of copying
Check Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. This setting controls the behavior on supported builds.
I cannot find the saved screenshot
Windows + PrtScn saves to Pictures\Screenshots. If Pictures is redirected to OneDrive, search for the Screenshots folder in File Explorer. A plain PrtScn capture is clipboard-only until you paste and save it.
The laptop has no PrtScn key
Try Fn + Windows + Spacebar, Microsoft’s documented fallback. Also inspect keys with a secondary Print Screen label because laptop layouts differ.
The pasted image is blank or old
Make a new capture, then paste immediately. Clipboard managers can show history rather than the latest item; select the newest entry. For a guaranteed file, use Windows + PrtScn instead.
A menu disappears before I capture it
Use Snipping Tool’s one-to-five-second delay, opened from the Start menu. Set the delay, open the menu, and let the capture begin after the selected interval.
Reliability and workflow tips
- Use region capture for documentation because it excludes unrelated windows and notifications.
- Use full-screen save when you need an immediately reusable file and do not want to depend on the clipboard.
- After a clipboard capture, paste into Paint and save a copy if the image must survive a reboot or clipboard replacement.
- For repeatable support reports, keep the original capture and record which shortcut and mode produced it.
Or skip the browser setup
Windows shortcuts are ideal for a person sitting at a desktop. For automated website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo provides one GET request that returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
