How to Take a Screenshot Across Multiple Monitors
Capture every display or a selected cross-monitor area on Windows and Mac, then troubleshoot layout, scaling, and app restrictions.
Short answer: On Windows, press Windows+Shift+S and choose Full-screen to capture the desktop, or drag a rectangular/freeform region across the displays. On Mac, press Shift+Command+3 for a screen capture, Shift+Command+4 for a selected region, or Shift+Command+5 to open Screenshot controls. Save the result and inspect it: Apple’s guide does not explicitly promise that multiple Mac displays will always be saved as one combined image.
Choose the capture you need
| Goal | Windows | Mac |
|---|---|---|
| All connected displays | Snipping Tool → Full-screen | Shift-Command-3 |
| One monitor or window | Snipping Tool → Window (or drag a region) | Shift-Command-4, then select the area |
| Region crossing monitors | Drag a rectangular/freeform selection across the arranged desktop | Drag with Shift-Command-4; verify the saved output |
| Clipboard-only image | Print Screen copies the entire screen to the clipboard | Use the normal shortcut, then open the saved capture or copy it from Preview |
Decide whether you need one very wide image, separate images for each display, or a crop that crosses the boundary. A single full-desktop capture can be extremely wide when monitors have different resolutions or scaling factors.
Prepare the monitors before capturing
Windows 11 and Windows 10
- Open Settings → System → Display.
- Select Identify to show the number on each physical monitor.
- Drag the display tiles until their left, right, top, and bottom edges match the physical arrangement.
- Click Apply, then move the pointer across the displays to confirm that the boundary is where you expect.
- Check each monitor’s resolution and scale. Different scale percentages can make a combined image look uneven.
Microsoft documents this arrangement workflow in its multiple-monitor guide. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the shortcut and Snipping Tool steps below are still documented for Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Windows 11 should be your current target.
Mac
- Open System Settings → Displays and arrange the display thumbnails to match your desk.
- Choose the primary display and verify that both monitors are detected at the expected resolution.
- Move the pointer across the edge between displays to confirm the arrangement.
- Close or minimize windows you do not want in a full-screen capture.
Apple’s Take a screenshot on Mac guide covers the keyboard shortcuts and Screenshot app. Some applications, including Apple TV, may block window screenshots.
Windows: capture multiple monitors
Full desktop
- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- Choose the Full-screen snip option.
- Open the Snipping Tool notification or app window.
- Review the image, edit it if needed, and save it as PNG, JPEG, or another available format.
Snipping Tool copies the capture into the app, where you can edit and save it. Microsoft’s instructions are in Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots.
Cross-monitor region
- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- Select Rectangular snip or Freeform snip.
- Start on one display and drag across the monitor boundary to the opposite edge.
- Release the pointer, then inspect the preview for clipped edges, blank areas, or an unexpected crop.
- Save the image from Snipping Tool.
If the selection stops at a monitor edge, use Full-screen mode and crop afterward. Selection behavior can depend on display arrangement, scaling, graphics drivers, and the Windows build.
Clipboard capture with Print Screen
Press PrtSc to place a static snapshot of the entire screen on the clipboard, as described in Microsoft’s window and screen capture guide. Paste it into Paint, an image editor, or a document and save it.
Mac: capture multiple monitors
Full-screen shortcut
Press Shift+Command+3. macOS saves the capture according to your Screenshot settings. Open the file and confirm whether your setup produced one combined image or separate display captures.
Selected area
- Press Shift+Command+4.
- Drag from the starting point on one display across the boundary to the ending point.
- Release to capture.
- Open the saved image and check both edges.
Screenshot controls
Press Shift+Command+5 to open the Screenshot app. Choose capture options, a timer, a destination, or screen recording. This is useful when you need to repeat the same capture while changing which display is primary.
Inspect and clean up the result
- Check dimensions: A combined desktop may be wider than common document or social-media limits.
- Check scaling: Text can appear larger on one monitor when displays use different scale or Retina settings.
- Check the seam: Make sure no window, cursor, or tooltip was cut at the monitor boundary.
- Crop deliberately: Remove empty desktop space or black bars with an image editor.
- Choose a format: PNG preserves small text and UI edges; JPEG is smaller for photographic content.
- Hide sensitive data: Close password managers, notifications, private tabs, and chat previews before capture.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Only one monitor appears | The capture mode selected one window or display. | Use Full-screen on Windows or Shift-Command-3 on Mac, then inspect the output. |
| The drag cannot cross the boundary | Display tiles are misaligned, scaling differs, or the tool limits the selection. | Rearrange displays in system settings, try a rectangular selection again, or capture full-screen and crop. |
| Displays are reversed | The operating system’s virtual arrangement does not match the desk. | Use Identify and drag the display tiles into the physical order. |
| A window is clipped | The window crosses a monitor edge or the app changed size during capture. | Maximize it on one display or use a full-desktop capture. |
| Black or blank area appears | An app may block screenshots, or a graphics driver/compositor failed. | Try another app, update graphics drivers, disable protected playback, or capture a different window. Apple notes that some apps restrict screenshots. |
| Text is blurry | Mixed DPI or a lossy format. | Match scale settings where possible and save as PNG. |
| Capture is too large to share | Combined dimensions and Retina scaling create a large bitmap. | Crop unused space, resize a copy, or export JPEG when fine text is not critical. |
| Notifications appear | Notifications were enabled during capture. | Turn on Do Not Disturb or Focus before repeating the shot. |
Performance, reliability, and file size
A multi-monitor image contains every pixel across the virtual desktop. Two 4K displays can create a very large bitmap, especially on a Retina or high-scale setup. Capturing full-screen is usually simpler and more repeatable than dragging a cross-display region; crop afterward when you need a precise rectangle.
For repeatable documentation, standardize monitor order, resolution, scale, browser zoom, and window placement. Take a test capture after reconnecting a dock or changing the primary display. Keep the original PNG as an archive and generate smaller derivatives for tickets or chat.
Or skip the browser setup
The built-in tools above capture your physical desktop. If what you actually need is a screenshot of a web page at a chosen viewport, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. It accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor, removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets, and reports whether the response was clean and billed. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

FAQ
Can I make one image that spans two monitors?
Windows Full-screen capture is the most direct built-in method. On Mac, use the full-screen shortcut and inspect the saved result because Apple’s documentation does not guarantee one combined image for every multi-display setup.
Which shortcut captures a selected cross-monitor area?
Windows uses Windows+Shift+S with Rectangular or Freeform snip. Mac uses Shift+Command+4.
Why are the monitors in the wrong order?
The virtual display arrangement is wrong. Use Identify in Windows Display settings or rearrange displays in macOS System Settings.
Should I use PNG or JPEG?
Use PNG for text, code, and interface screenshots. Use JPEG when a smaller file matters and slight compression is acceptable.
